šŸ‘· šŸš§ Infrastructure Overhaul! Report newly broken functionality here! šŸ”„ šŸš’

Ah, yeah; I added an edit to the post saying I saw it, but Iā€™ll make it a bit more prominent just in case. Thank you!

Links to the creators on TV series pages are broken and lead to an error. It looks like ā€œ[object]ā€ is just inserted into the URL instead of going to a search page.

It seems that all of the Tadoku readers throw an ā€œIssue with our serverā€ error instead of fetching gradings. Maybe itā€™s due to there being so many? But other popular books like Yotsuba donā€™t have this error

oh interesting. It seems to be trying to pull all the gradings for some reason, rather than just the book gradings. Definitely a bug to look into

It seems that updating either the ā€œDays readā€ or ā€œDays watchedā€ calendar on the front page and then immediately clicking the ā€œForumā€ link causes a server error popup to appear, though no error actually happens (at least, the calendar updates and the browser navigates to the forum fine). I didnā€™t notice the error happening when clicking to other parts of the site, just the forum.

Firefox on Windows 10.

Iā€™ve sent a few emails about some other stuff, but not heard anything back for about a week so rather than send another email into oblivionā€¦

Given the recent breakage and forums being down and whatnot thought Iā€™d wait but as of this morning when trying to sort book lists, this issue is still happening. Looks like some fix was done early last year but ā€¦ still not working and a refresh didnā€™t make any difference

Looks like thereā€™s a bad book somewhere in your library. @brandon had an automated job up to try to clean up those cases, but it seems like itā€™s been ineffective for a couple of months now. It appears to be an L30 Owned Light Novel in shulyā€™s library @brandon, if you can find it.

thereā€™s probably more than a few

thereā€™s a bunch of series that are all wonky (emailed but havenā€™t heard back on the best way to report them all) thereā€™s way more than one or two

the series are either duplicated or not grouping properly. Itā€™s bit a a mess TBH

@shuly yeah thereā€™s quite a backlog of data updates & dedupes I need to do! Thanks for the reminder, will get to that this week.

Eesh i guess so. I did a quick fix by just doing a whole reset of the libraries (should be working), but need to fix the automated checker.

My library is finally looking good now, thank you! :+1:

woo hoo! The sorting is working. Thanks!
Looks that didnā€™t fix all the series duplicates though (maybe this is the automated checker needing fixing).

This what I meant by the series being duplicated. The reset seemed to help some, but not all. These arenā€™t the only ones but a general example of what I meant.

This particular edition of death note has 7 vol but they are all separate

There are quite a few of these series but then isolated books:

One weird one is this series that is in there 3x

Then thereā€™s some stuff like this

This is what I meant by a bit of a mess. Let me know if youā€™re checker tool will find these or if I should go through one by one and report them, or something else?

fwiw I already noticed the å›ć®åćÆ duplicate series and reported them, along with a few others.

What I assume happened is that when the series were requested, each volume was requested individually instead of just the first one, and then when the individual books synced to Amazon, each entry had the same series information imported, resulting in a duplicate series entry for each book. If thatā€™s the case then it would be user error, though ideally the duplicate checker would still catch them before the book entries get approved

What some may call a ā€œuser errorā€ is something a database like this shouldnā€™t allow. This would mean that anyone with ill intention could simply create mad chaos and duplicate books all over the place.

This seems to be an unintended consequence of how the book adder tool works, but something that should get added to a programming base to prevent it from happening in the first place. This is something I emailed Brandon about because it wasnā€™t clear how long when adding a series it was going to actually take. I have one that while I added as a series a few days ago, never populated. (reported separately). Then there were others that sometimes took hours to populate as a series. Which the adding tool doesnā€™t prompt/tell you to wait an hour or two, like the sync tool does tell you.

So even if the tool warned you it still doesn't stop you from ...

What you can do is add a book click series from vol 1, and then when the series doesnā€™t populate immediately or after 10-15 min, one might can click add book and click series again for vol 2 and so on. Cold eyes use of the tool, one would expect the system to realize these are the same series and group them. Thereā€™s nothing that tells you this isnā€™t what happens. In some cases it then treats the series as multiple series and you end up with vol x of that series but then the other vols not owned. And in some cases it doesnā€™t detect the additional vol as series.

Really isnā€™t a user error if anyone can go through and make a mess of the database w/o doing anything they arenā€™t allowed to do by just using the request tool as it is currently built into the system. This is more of an unintended consequence that isnā€™t prohibited or checked by the current system and no warnings are given to prevent a user from doing this. While not necessarily a bug in the strictest sense, this is a QC/QA thing and shouldnā€™t be allowed.

A couple of possible stop gaps ...

(not a programmer but thoughts) would be to have the system check if a book title was added in the past hour or two and then if so, it cannot be added again until the system confirms that item has fully synced and/or some time has passed. Also if the system checked for existing series that may already exist (possible suspects) then instead of auto adding, send the request to add for approval but not ā€œauto addā€.

Another possible and maybe useful feature...

When adding a book have a tool that auto searches partial and says hey you are trying to add this book, is it already one of these? The tool does seem to know when a book is in the system in the strictest of 1-1 matching which is great. However, when I was first adding my library I was finding that a bunch of books were probably added via kindle (so no ISBN) so had to search the system more than once to try to find them. There are probably many ways to accomplish something like this but as the tool is currently setup itā€™s allowing this to happen.

One thing that might help is if the community could help approvals instead of relying on Brandon to do it all. (Not sure what that looks like but, seems like a lot of work to manage all the approvals/problems/de-dups for just one person of a community this size.)

What I would like to know from @brandon is which books/series should I report and when. If de-dups are going to happen then I donā€™t want to waste time reporting them and making more work until the dust has settled from that exercise.

There are a lot of messed up series as well on the Korean side. A lot of which Iā€™ve reported, but hereā€™s a quick list.

ģ‹ ģ˜ ķƒ‘ 1 | L24?? (the first volume only)
ģ‹ ģ˜ ķƒ‘ ģ‹œė¦¬ģ¦ˆ | L30??
(This one I did knowingly add the second one, but Iā€™d been waiting for the rest of the volumes to be added after requesting them and it just was not happening, I wanted to log them before the end of the year at least)

ģ™øėŖØģ§€ģƒģ£¼ģ˜ 1 | L27 (the first volume only)
ģ™øėŖØģ§€ģƒģ£¼ģ˜ ģ‹œė¦¬ģ¦ˆ | L28
(The add more volumes button does not work. I am positive I tried that several times)

ė‚˜ ķ˜¼ģžė§Œ ė ˆė²Øģ—… 1 | L27 (the first volume only)
https://learnnatively.com/series/069ed60062/
(The series is bogus, probably due to a Yes24 mishap, it mixes several webtoons somehow, including the rest of the volumes of ė‚˜ ķ˜¼ģžė§Œ ė ˆė²Øģ—…)

DragonBall (ė“œėž˜ź³¤ė³¼) is a mess, somehow there are 58 separate volumes and not a single series

AFAIK the series of a requested item doesnā€™t populate at all until itā€™s manually approved, which usually happens in batches every few days, not after 15 minutes. For example, I requested ē¾ŽäŗŗćÆ恄恋恌? 1 | L24?? months ago and it never got approved to show up in search, so itā€™s still only in the system as a single book with no series attachment. Therefore there are no duplicates for a duplicate checker to catch if I were use the request tool to add the remaining volumes; at the time theyā€™re added they would all be treated as unique books with no connection to each other or any existing series, and the messiness would only happen when theyā€™re all okayed to be populated as series separately and end up being duplicates of the same.

Thatā€™s still something that ideally a duplicate check would be able to catch before the items get fully approved, but I donā€™t think users can be outright prevented from adding same-series books at the request stage like youā€™re suggesting (at least with the way the request tool and book approvals currently work), which is why the tool just politely asks the user not to request multiple books from the same series until they get an email asking for that information.

Iā€™d love for Natively to have some sort of ā€œlibrarianā€ volunteer role for users to contribute to the maintenance of the site! But I imagine creating a system of vetting users to have the power to approve and edit items, and making some sort of interface for them to use to do so, would be a lot of extra work to set up and manage, and the amount of actual work it takes off of Brandonā€™s plate might be negligible in the end.

I remember @brandon mentioning that it was another person taking care of the book approving, so I think the interface itself already exists.

Will wait for brandon but this isnā€™t quite true. When I added a new series, it did show up in MY library but of course itā€™s not globally searchable, but itā€™s in my library. Then after about a half hour the additional books in the series would populate (no human was involved). I could click owned and add to the library with a couple of hours.

As far as showing up in the system by global searching, that I do believe is a manual process and in fact Iā€™m stilling waiting for many books to be approved (emails havenā€™t come through for all of them). I also sent detailed info requested regarding some other series (still waiting for a response on that one as well).

In any case, if two different users happened to be adding the same series during the same time period this is something that could still happen and catching as many duplicates BEFORE rather than AFTER is going to get to the root cause instead of leaving clean up work for admin/mods later. Aside from the books here/there it also leaves open holes for a not nice someone to just create a whole mess just for fun (no hacking tools required).

This would be super awesome to have advanced readers like yourself and others that are spread out in various time zones and whatnot if this was made available.

I kind of doubt that that person still is active, because of that backlog. When the person was active, approval at the right time of day sometimes went within an hour. They were paid to do it as a job, as I understood. To not have them, though, may be problematic depending on the visa conditions.

I donā€™t think you need much beyond the basicsā€¦ you just need someone to check that the covers are not 18+ and check if itā€™s the first volume of a series or not/a repeat somehow not caught by the system.
