So new boy’s name is フェリオ, huh. He seems like a neat guy; shame this manga is short and quick; I don’t know how much we’ll be able to see him once we get out of this forest.
I’m also pretty happy to see that アルシオーネ is back! It would’ve been way too sad if she really did get one-shotted by 光 back in volume 1, haha. Maybe she’ll be the catalyst 風 and 海 need to unlock their powers; they really need it. I also respect the whole, “I’m betraying my mentor and princess because boy is ザガート hot”, haha. If he follows all good villain tropes he doesn’t know you exist, アルシオーネ.
Cute that Fuu and フェリオ have a little thing going on XD but with the pacing so far and the # of volumes, it doesn’t seem like there’s enough time for much to happen besides getting the materials, getting their weapons made and then confronting ザガート and saving the princess. Still not really invested in the story yet
One of the things I really like about this manga is that it just goes. It dilly dallies even less than the Sailor Moon manga, which also feels pretty speedy to me. These were somewhat contemporaneous with like Dragon Ball which has a million bazillion books and just never gets to the point. By comparison I always really liked that era’s magical girl manga for having a place to go and getting to it.
There were a bunch of great panels this week, but ugh, this one:
That’s very true! I’m definitely enjoying the snappiness for sure. I’m always a bit concerned whether an author can pull off everything they want in just a couple of volumes, because some authors just aren’t equipped for that, so I’ve been reading MKR with interest with that in mind.
I think a lot of low-number-of-volumes manga are that way because they got cancelled for not selling well enough, so they have a tendency to have unsatisfying endings that feel in the wrong proportions compared to the start of the story. But I’m pretty sure MKR would been planned out to be the length it is.
I went and looked up information about the second series manga (a.k.a. vols 4-6). Apparently their serialisation in Nakayoshi followed immediately after the end of MKR1, without even a month’s break. Maybe that was “do us a follow-on story, this one did well”?
Without going into a lot of detail, I always forget they’re technically two series, and not a 6 book run. But also, as I’m rereading I’ve realized I’ve forgotten a lot (and I only read the first one in English, and my Japanese skills as a teenager were decidedly not great), so my comments may not have a lot of weight.
Finally!! a character who isn’t all insufferably 上から目線, and can actually communicate straightforwardly. Strong level-headed cutie, with some cute flirting and exchanges to boot! And that whole bluffing scenario was A+
The whole 魔物 encounter and “solve it with creative thinking” thing was a lot more fun than previous battles. It’s too bad the annoying, self-important villain girl came back again, but I guess it makes sense to have a consistent enemy
Maybe for the better anyway, since they’re planning on going back home
