My highest ever manga score, wow!!

I also wanted to share what I’ve been doing with 都道府県のおはなし, which is writing in kanji as furigana for hiragana only words.

The two pages I read this morning were for Chibaken, and I had to write 飛 soooo many times! (Had to look up the stroke order at first because just looking at it in my dictionary I was completely stumped how to write it .)

That’s a fun idea for a kana heavy book, I like it. It’s always fun to read new reviews, thanks for linking!

Somehow my brain was going Chubaka and it took me a while to be like, oooh, Japanese :hear_no_evil:

Well, this is a weird update! I’m writing it on Sunday night instead of Monday morning to get it out of the way, because starting tomorrow morning I have 5 days of intensive music instruction! I’m excited and having fun already (playing tunes with folks I met at previous years). I’m also very sleepy. But I must share that something quite shocking happened … … … my phone (primary purpose: home of my kanji study) died!

I got a bit upset at first. I just surpassed a 600 day streak on studying, and I have literally thousands of kanji in progress on there, and I got nervous about what if I can’t recover the data when I get home? But then I decided it’s okay. I can take a one week break from kanji. (I can stop whenever I want!) And if it became necessary I would probably actually have fun rebuilding.

So anyway, thus begins one week cold turkey. :stuck_out_tongue: (Not completely, because I’ll still be doing a little reading during down time, but for Japanese study this will be a very quiet week.)

Wish me luck!

My favourite part is how the score always has a question mark :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I saw this on another thread, I hope you have the best time ever, sounds like a load of fun!

:rage: nooooo sorry to hear that. I hope it wasn’t too much hassle just before you went away and love how you’re just taking it for what it is

Have a great time! Can’t wait to hear about the music camp

I was able to turn on my old phone and do a new backup of my 271 hours and 59 minutes of kanji study time, and it is now restored to my new phone! And 18717 words imported to new phone takoboto dictionary! (Those are words I added to favorites or other lists.) And also logged in so I can search by drawing again. Old phone mysteriously died again, hopefully I can get it to turn on again to get my recordings backed up as well.

I solemnly swear that I will never again rely on phone storage without backing things up. (It was silly that there even was a first time, but oh well. I thought I was living fancy-free, but actually I am kind of attached to my data.)

I was feeling drained this week and didn’t make a particularly strong effort towards anything. It’s funny how just a week away can decimate your study routine. I’m not going to list everything I was doing every day before because just thinking about it makes me feel kinda tired. But anyway, I’m not feeling bad about having a slow week, just noticing how it feels like I’m going to be starting nearly from scratch on building up my routine again. And that’s okay! As Calvin’s dad would say, builds character. :joy:

I want this study log to be more exciting! But it’s just not that exciting a week. Now, the week that I forfeit a bunch of tsundoku points and order new books, that will be an exciting week!

Btw, does anyone have ideas how あさがおと加瀬さん could fit into a bingo prompt?

I don’t do the bingo thing, but I’ve read it. So if you give an example, maybe I could suggest something?

I don’t recall if Mara is following the prompt list exactly, but you can find it here and Mara’s current completed squares here.

Based on that list, the following seem possible:

  1. A bunch of us voted for it when you (Mara) asked if you should read it or Sasakoi
  2. There is an anime adaptation of the highlights of the series. I watched it in Amazon JP
  3. Depends if you find the title interesting, of course

Ooh, yeah, that’ll work! Thanks!

Apologies in advance for the random message:

I really like your Tsundoku score rules, can I borrow them? I think it’s a fantastic way to encourage reading through previously purchased books while still allowing purchase of new books.

Of course! And feel free to change them however you like so they work best for you.

Like for example I made an emotional decision to allow myself a totally illegal book order just yesterday.

:joy:

P.S. There were extenuating circumstances!

Tsundoku score: 17* (sigh. rereads don’t yield points.)

But! I’m excited to be rereading Nozaki-kun! This manga was such a challenge for me when I first read it. I managed to keep up with the offshoot club for four volumes before I hit a wall and dropped out. It’s still not extraordinarily easy, I probably have at least one look-up on every page, but it is SO MUCH easier than it was before! (I was able to read the whole volume in just a week!) And I love these characters and all their wackiness. There’s also a lot of queerness which is accepted unconditionally by many or all of the characters, which I appreciate.

I posted my first Harta issue review in ages! Issue 89 (Now organized chronologically!)

Lessons

:sparkles: New segment! :sparkles:

I’m realizing that I don’t just have to rebuild my study routine, I also need to redesign it. Because! I’m taking a group lesson where we read 魔女の宅急便 with the teacher! One of the homeworks is that we can record a minute of us talking about each of the questions in our materials. And I am SO BAD at speaking! So I definitely need to do that homework in order to have a fighting chance in class. I tried to do the recording today and listened to it back … it took me 2 minutes to say what I was trying to say, and probably 45-60 seconds of it was just “えええっとおおおお”. (I re-recorded it and managed to get it down to about 65 seconds.)

I’m really excited for this class, I think it’s gonna give me the opportunity to make tons of improvement in my speaking and also in my understanding of what I’m reading. (I already learned a whole new way of using … !!!) …

But ...

I am also feeling like I maybe accidentally took on more than I meant to recently because on top of medical care which requires lots of appointments I am taking this class, going to tons of music sessions (usually two every week), trying to start bouldering (fun and good for arm and hand strength!) sometimes after work, needing to do my weightlifting exercises for arm strength so I can keep holding my instrument up at aforementioned sessions, needing to do significant exercise two or three times a week in order to manage my health condition, umm, also go to work and do my job … There’s many more things I’d like to be doing, but these are just the ones that are really on my radar to actually do.

I don’t really know how to manage all that besides just trying to get as organized as I can. I’ve been writing in and looking at my paper planners tons.

Anyway, I guess that means I have to be a bit flexible and more accepting of “good enough”. For now.

How do I make that not sound like a really ominous way to sign off this log?

:sparkles:

No books finished this week! Nevertheless, I’m happy with my reading this week. I felt like I was more able to sit down and read a whole chapter, or a whole two chapters, or just read about Kiki until I reached a stopping point, rather than an exhaustion point.

:sparkles: Lessons and study planning

Last weeks lesson was good, doing the self-recording homework beforehand definitely paid off, at least a little. I plan to do the same this week.

The other thing I’ve noticed is how little listening practice I do, especially compared with other people who keep learning logs.

EG

https://community.wanikani.com/t/🌧-soggys-study-log-🌧/62696/936

and

https://community.wanikani.com/t/☀️🏝️-the-taiyousea-study-log-🏝️☀️/60475/971

But I gave those two specific examples because they seemed like things I would like! So I may try tracking some listening as well. I already started in on SoundLibrary and it’s been interesting. I definitely understand lots of the words and phrases, but have a hard time following the story. Should be good practice!

Also, this is random but … I’m feeling a little sad about the Natively forums being so quiet! It feels like the WK study log “scene” :stuck_out_tongue: is buzzing with activity, meanwhile the Natively mystery club just went on hiatus due to not enough participation. I don’t know what to do about it either.

Kinda in the same way that manga is a good way to first start reading, I really recommend starting listening with something visual. It can help when you don’t quite understand something, but it also keeps your attention better in case you’re a mind wandering type like me  it doesn’t slot as well into your daily routine the way podcasts do, but that’s kinda the only downside.

I’ve been thinking this too lately :sob:
I started being over on WK more because I was interested in some the manga clubs recently, but I’ve found myself spending more and more time over there since the Natively forums have been so quiet.

Natively is definitely home for me… but I’m considering keeping a second, more frequent log over on WK bc I feel like that granularity would just flood the forums over here. And it’d also be nice to have a place where all my things are collected over there. I mean I also kinda hope that posting about bookclubs over here could entice people this way, but I don’t have super high hopes…

I’ve been feeling that way as well. And I occasionally stopped myself from posting because I thought I would be flooding an otherwise quiet forum, but if we’re all feeling the same way… :eyes:
It also might just be because July/August is generally holiday season in the Northern hemisphere. At least I hope things will get busier in September…
I don’t believe I’ve ever posted on the wanikani forums, but even I have been reading the logs and other discussions going on over there.

Feel free to join August 2025 Listening Challenge if it would help motivate you. No need to set an actual goal or anything

I love anime for this purpose for all these reasons

It’s your log tho - the only thing it floods is… your log

Probably an edge case, but we got a few extra participants in the upcoming まちカドまぞく from there, and I’m sure that’s happened with other clubs.

Actually tho, I look at earlier book club participation numbers (in the LN club for example), and wonder what happened. I have to imagine a number of those users were also WK users

Interesting that more than a few of us seem to have this anxiety (tho I still post plenty anyway, possibly too much)

Anyway interesting to me that others feel it’s been quiet lately too. I assumed it was either just my imagination or that I’m online too much. I mean I am online too much.

Y’all should post to your heart’s content, imo

Agreed. You should post whether it’s quiet or not. After all, if you do, it’ll be less quiet, right? So it’s a win-win.

One thing I noticed is that the Natively forum isn’t as discoverable on the Internet. Essentially as far as I can tell you can’t really lurk here. looking from the Natively home page when not logged in, there is a call to action to join the community, but you have to make an account first to see it and you don’t see a preview. I’m guessing this limits people who join. But it places higher value on privacy, which a lot of people might like to keep, so I haven’t brought it up

Yes! I joined wk first so my log is there, but I stay active here and make a point to jump into as many clubs or events and discussions as I can. It’s not a lot but I’ve enjoyed the clubs and community events I’ve done here.

I’m with the others, post as much as you like!

I do admire you all here and your efforts have been a big part of motivating me to be more active here. On the other hand, yes, a bit more buzz is an advantage in a log. It’s OK to be on team Natively and be active here, but have a log on wk imo, so don’t feel bad if you do want to try a change
