Continuing on our challenge to ourselves to boost our listening skills, the March challenge is ready for signups! Set whatever number of hours feels like a reasonable goal for you and feel free to share the things you’re listening to, your successes and setbacks. We’re in this together
All languages welcome!
This post will be a wiki so you can add and update your own hours.
Probably doing 40 hrs, but might reduce it, since I’ve been reading heavy for a while now February’s Challenge. Anything that’s spoken audio (with or without accompanying text) counts.
I wonder if it would be worth changing this to a “every three or four months” kind of thing? Just for in terms of participation. I’m hoping I can hit a goal every month this year, but I definitely feel less motivated to chat about what I’ve been doing when there’s so few other people.
I was surprised by the fact that it’s only 2 of us so far this month… maybe every few months is the way to go? Or maybe it’s just run its course? I guess we’ll see if there’s any more participation by the end of the month. Personally I’ll start [also] tracking my listening on my learning log regardless, cuz that’s been the most beneficial part for me
Maybe more ppl will come if there’s more chat? I was actually about to post this wonderful YouTube channel, where the guy reads manga & explains it all in Japanese (there are some pure podcast tracks too, but even those usually have video of some sort)
It’s very accessible, and is actually getting me a little interested in よつばと! | L17 of all things!
I’m not tracking my listening because I usually end up doing very little of it, but I’m happy to post here whenever I do, even though I’m not participating in the listening challenge!
I actually started watching a movie in Korean (벼랑 위의 포뇨 | L19), with Korean subtitles for the first time ever so I’m pretty excited. I got to a little over an hour in before I started feeling sleepy, maybe because the movie is so cosy, maybe because I was getting tired of so much listening. Regardless, I think I got maybe 70% of what was going on, mainly just the child (Sosuke?) and Ponyo. The mum I found was a bit fast but I could make out some parts, and I have no idea what Ponyo’s dad is talking about. And that’s about all of the characters so far!
The subtitles help, but they don’t match the sub at all, so if I’m really lost I can pause and read the sentence. It gives me 2 sources to get meaning from.
@eefara you are on a roll! over and hour every day is impressive.
I managed to listen to an entire episode of Didi의 한국문화 podcast, which i’m pretty proud of because the last time i tried listening to her it was mostly unintelligible to me. Now my comprehension isn’t great, but it’s good enough that i got through all 25 minutes and understood at least the gist of it.
This is encouraging, maybe I can try to improve my listening again - and join the april challenge
