I enjoy how your reading often seems to be a mix of childrenโs books and smut
I knew most of it - my previous study method was all anki + textbooks with very little actual reading, so I feel like Iโm catching up with my reading skills this time around.
Iโm reading a few books around the L30 mark (which is about the level I studied to before) and the biggest thing holding me back isnโt grammar or vocab, itโs my reading stamina: I find that Iโm only able to read for 10-15 minutes at a time before needing to take a break.
So Iโm reading higher level books in short bursts and working my way up through lower level books at the same time, which I hope will help raise my reading skills to the same kind of level as my vocab/grammar knowledge.
It helps that Iโm reading a high volume in a short period of time; I donโt have the chance to forget!
Thatโs why I love parenting BLs so much: wholesome adventures of cute kids, and after theyโre asleep, smut!
Thatโs a really smart approach!! I think youโll get there in no time! ํ์ดํ !

Review
What a quiet week for meโฆ
- In the end, I didnโt make much progress with ํด๋ฆฌํฌํฐ and ์๋งจํฑ ์๋ฌ , but Iโll keep plugging awayโฆ
- Iโve read 75% of the ๋๋ฃจ์ฑ ๋ฐฉ - Free (series) | L0-20 books, only 28 more to go!
- I think Iโve graded extra for all the books Iโve read in Korean so far, a total of 15k+ comparisons.
Plans
Book club!
No idea how long that will take, but assuming Iโm able to get through it, Iโll probably just keep working through HP/์๋ฌ/๋๋ฃจ.

Review
So many Lion King films this weekโฆ
I noticed that the dubbed version of the first film doesnโt have the copious amount of wordplay that the original has, which makes it easier to understand, but loses some of the appeal for older audiences. I came across a blog that has the original lyrics, the Korean translation, and the dubbed lyrics for I Just Canโt Wait to be King - you can see how much is changed in the one song alone.
When it comes to what can be lost in translation, I usually think of poetry, and to a lesser extent, (high) literature. It didnโt really occur to me that even an animated childrenโs film could lose a lot of its character due to the translation. Obviously there are factors specific to the medium that influence the translation (timing, matching charactersโ mouth movements), as well as wordplay based on cultural things that arenโt easy to replicate in other languages.
Banzai: Yeah. We could have whateverโs โlionโ [lyinโ] around!
๋ฐ์์ด: ๊ทธ๋, ์ฌ์ ๋ฐ์ฐฌ์์ ์์ฌ ์ข ํด ๋ณด์!
Shenzi: Oh wait, wait, wait. I got one, I got one. Make mine a โcubโ [club] sandwich. Whatcha think?
์ ด์ง: ์ ๊น, ์ ๊น, ๋ ๋ญ ๋จน์๊น? ๋, ์ฌ์ ์๋์์น ์ด๋ค๊ฐ?
Itโs funny what learning a new languages unearths from your memories - I think Iโve mentioned before that starting to read in a new language made me remember the specific methods I used when I was learning to read as a child, and watching these Disney films I remembered that often there were things I had missed or not understood when I first watched them as a kid, but rewatching them months or years later, Iโd suddenly understand certain jokes I hadnโt before. Which just shows how repeated viewing can aid understanding and act as a measure of your progressโฆ The wisdom of children!
I finally finished reading all the ๋๋ฃจ์ฑ ๋ฐฉ - Free (series) | L0-20 books! Itโs been so hot this week, I couldnโt concentrate on anything difficult, so I just binged the last several books. Iโll just leave this here for now until whenever series reviews are implemented:
This free series aims to make reading in Korean easy for children of multicultural families, but itโs useful for language learners of all ages who want to start reading native content. There are books suitable for complete beginners who only know how to read ํ๊ธ, as well as more difficult books suitable for low-intermediate level learners - and everything in-between!
There are more than 100 books available, and as they are all under 20 pages long, they can be read quite quickly. There are a variety of topics covered, such as everyday life, food, animals, science, technology, history, and folk tales. Due to the aim of the site, youโll find several books (fiction and non-fiction) about Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and China.
The books are all accompanied by high quality native audio: the two narrators enunciate well, their performances are enjoyable, and the recordings are very clear. There are also colourful illustrations on every page, depicting the scenes described in the text, which helps provide context.
Overall itโs an excellent resource for those wanting to improve their Korean reading skills. The books are high quality, include native audio, and best of all, theyโre free! I only wish there were more of them, as they are wonderful for extensive reading.
Plans
Apart from reading ์ฑ ๋ฒ๋ ์ ํ๊ทน์ ์ 1๋ถ - ๋ณ์ฌ์ ๋ธ 1 | L28 for the book club, I donโt have any specific plans; Iโm just enjoying watching and reading whatever takes my fancy.
I mentioned in another thread that ๋งํ๊ฒฝ is shutting down at the end of May 2024, so Iโve decided to read as many of their free webtoon series as I can before then. There are about 200 series, and 260 days to go, so I probably wonโt get through them all, but Iโll give it my best shot!
Below is a list the current titles in alphabetical order. Once I finish a title, Iโll link it to its anilist page (since Natively doesnโt track webtoons yet) and a star rating out of 5 (โ โ โ โ โ). A small number of these are offered on other webtoon sites (so I probably wonโt bother with those), but most are only available on ๋งํ๊ฒฝ, and may be lost forever once the service closes. Review
Finished ์ต๋โs beginners podcasts, and started the regular series. I kind of wonder why I wanted to listen to the whole beginner series since it was too easy for me, but I guess I like doing things in order? I also get the feeling these podcasts may have been a lockdown project, as episodes were released regularly for a couple of years, then stopped. In the past year or so there have only been two further episodes, one of which was in the past week. Hopefully theyโll continue, as there arenโt many easy Korean podcasts which are (almost) entirely in Korean.
The regular episodes are about 15-20 minutes long and noticeably more challenging than the beginner episodes (I have to actually pay attention ). In the first episode, ์ต๋ talks about (really, really) enjoying listening to Nihongo con Teppei while learning Japanese, which unsurprisingly inspired โํ๊ตญ์ด con ์ต๋โ. In the second, we learn that ์ต๋ is indeed short for โangry duckโ, but thereโs also ํ์ to go with it: ๆซป (์ต๋ ์ต) - cherry, and ๅพท (๋ ๋) - virtuous. I think the host mentioned that itโs their IRL nickname, too.
Also listened to an episode of KBS ๋ฌด๋ - I think Iโll try to listen to these regularly, and if thereโs one I particularly enjoy Iโll relisten while reading the ๋๋ณธ. I kind of โsaveโ ๐ง Podcasts & Radio Dramas [with scripts] to practise reading and listening concurrently, but I reminded myself that I donโt need to do that - since it requires a bit more attention and concentration (I inevitably end up doing intensive reading, even if I donโt mean to), it tends to be forgotten about in favour of more enjoyable content.
๋ฌด๋ is at a nice level for me: easy enough to casually listen to while doing other things, but just challenging enough to keep my attention (I tend to tune out of content thatโs too easy or too difficult). The stories are interesting enough, even if theyโre not the type of content Iโd usually pick.
Being able to purchase from ์ค๋์ค์ฝ๋ฏน์ค(AudioComics) would be great, but has the usual hurdles of accessing Korean content (I guess they donโt want my moneyโฆ). Iโd like to listen to podcasts that are unscripted where the hosts just chat about random stuff, but I think it would be difficult to find something thatโs right in that understanding sweet spot, and I donโt have the patience to try lots of different shows Goldilocks-style on podbbang right now.
I read ์ธํ ์ฒ๊ตญ, which is the ๋งํ equivalent of an ice cream sundae with all the toppings - 300% of your recommended daily sugar intake and ๋๋ฌด๋๋ฌด ๊ท์ฝ๋ค!
Continuing the ๋จ์น ์์ด์ ์๋ฆฌ์ฆ (series) | L20 ๋งํ - not quite as amazing as ํผ๋นโs other series ๋น์๋์ ์ฐ์ ๋ด ์๋ฆฌ์ฆ (series) | L26, but the cute, wholesome, healthy relationship makes it better than 99% of other BL in my eyes.
Also got more physical Korean books!
- ์ฑ ๋ฒ๋ ์ ํ๊ทน์ ์ 1๋ถ - ๋ณ์ฌ์ ๋ธ 1 | L28 - since Iโm enjoying the story so far, Iโd prefer reading the physical copy
- Semantic Error - started the ebook, but wasnโt particularly enjoying the digital experience, so continuing with the physical copy (5-volume ebook is compiled into two physical books)
- ์๋ํ ํ๊ต | L21 - listened to the audiobook on Storytel (no ebook available), looking forward to reading and listening to pick up on the parts I missed
- ๋ง๋ ๋ฐฐ๋ฌ๋ถ ํคํค 1 | L25?? - another one with the audiobook on Storytel but no ebook, planning on reading/listening to the Japanese as well at some point, so this will be good prep
- ํด๋ผ๋ผ์ ๋ง๋ฌผ์์ | L22?? - no real reason except it seemed interesting and no ebook was available
Generally itโs cheaper and more convenient to read Korean ebooks, but I donโt particularly enjoy reading digitally, so if I like a book, Iโd rather have the physical copy (and of course not all books are available as ebooks).

Review
Another light week on the Korean side of things. I wonder whether this is just a natural cycle, where Iโll find myself pulled more to one language than another for a period of time before the pendulum swings back the other way. It could also be that I just happen to have found a lot of Japanese content thatโs entertaining and at a comfortable language level, so thereโs less time for Korean (it has also crossed my mind that thinking of content by language rather than just the entertainment value may also play a part in it, but who knows). Anyway, trying not to worry about it too much and just trusting that something will spark my interest in Korean again.
Listened to some ์ต๋ episodes which I need to play at 1.5x speed, otherwise they feel painfully slow (and, somewhat surprisingly, more difficult to understand). Although itโs a step up language-wise from the beginner show, the content is still a bit boring for me, since Iโm already familiar with the cultural things sheโs discussing.
Didnโt enjoy the ๋ฌด๋ ep I listened to, it was one of those over-the-top ๋ง์ฅs:
Woman: Iโve been working 30 hours a day for a month.
Boyfriend: Should I drive?
Woman: No, itโs fine
-driving noises-
Woman: Look at my dangerous driving!
Boyfriend: Please drive more carefully.
Woman: Donโt worry so much.
-CRASH!-
-hospital sounds-
Doctor: Youโre in the hospital.
Woman: Is my boyfriend hurt, too?
Doctor: No.
Woman: Thatโs a relief.
Doctor: He ded.
Woman: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! ITโS AAAAAAAAAAALL MYYYYYYYYYY FAAAAAAAAAAAAAULT!!!
So that was the first couple of minutesโฆ I did burst out laughing several times at how absurd it was (the BF comes back as a ghost!), but I donโt get the appeal of these kind of dramas.
I have a tendency to want to finish low-effort content, even if Iโm not enjoying it, so I did end up listening to the whole thing. It also explains why Iโm slogging through ์ ๋ชฝ์ ์ S1 | L23 even though Iโm finding it incredibly boring.
Why do I do this to myself? Thereโs a whole bunch of amazing Korean books and shows I could be enjoying, but my brain is like โyou must eat these overcooked veggies before you can have dessertโ.
