Book 4!
Ok, I binged this whole book yesterday, will now attempt to write a comment on all the stories.
ヤマ缶詰とずるずるあげもち
This story was such a surprise! I didn’t expect it to be so dark
Actually, I loved it, because it was a great shakeup to the typical way that the stories unfold. I was super surprised by the darkness of the ending but it still felt like it made a lot of sense in the overall theme in this book of choice. He could have chosen Beniko’s sweet that involved studying, but he took the easy way out and paid the price. Probably one of the more explicit moralistic stories.
ウルフまんじゅう
Ok, at first I enjoyed this story because I like when stories are connected with the same characters. But it was a pretty typical story about how You Shouldn’t Seek Revenge Because Violence Is Never The Answer Blah Blah, plus a pretty corny ending where the character realizes he’s become a werewolf
and looks up
at the full moon
(it’s a full moon because he’s a werewolf duh) and says, I choose to be a human!!! Snore.
眠り貯金箱と眠らせんべい
I liked this story because I liked seeing how the sweets from the two different shops interacted, and had the same basic function with different results. Interestingly, in this one, it seemed like よどみ’s payment was 後悔 not malice/ill will, so I wonder if she can collect any negative emotions or something like that, maybe just one specific negative emotion per sweet.
Ok, and a very tidy ending where they get to never sleep forever
together
But… what if they get sick of each other and break up?? Is all I’m saying.
ゴブリンチョコエッグ
The little goblin guy was reminding me of fairy tale creatures where you have to be very careful how you deal with them or else you’ll get messed with. I actually really enjoyed the ending where she secretly gave it to the old woman who gave offerings so fervently every day on the buddhist altar and then it turned her life around
Warmed my cold dead heart a bit.
虫歯あられ
The ending on this one, I’m just imagining the parents having to buy dentures for this child after the story ends.
虹色水あめ
I was wondering where this story was going because at first it seemed unclear what the sweet from the Zenitendou even did. I did like the perspective where you could tell that the friend had clearly bought one of よどみ’s sweets. And wow, finally a clear explanation from Beniko about why she does what she does! To be honest, her business model seems more stable than よどみ’s because she’s not relying on the generation of specific emotions, just on chance as a concept, and she seems to enjoy good endings and bad endings for her customers both.
There was an explanation for this, it was something like coins also represent a choice for humans: money can either make good things happen or bad things happen, but how you use it is up to you. That’s the connection to her point of view.
Edit: Oh, and now I’ve scrolled down farther in the thread and see you’ve reread this part so you probably know this now. Oh well! ![]()
Overall I had a fun time reading this, but I’m at the end of the physical copies that I own, so going to take a break from buying this series now.
