Product Updates & Casual Natively Discussion

I think it’s a bug yes… pending investigation

Another bug: recently-added German books aren’t pulling blurbs from Amazon. Of the last ~15 books added, the only one with a blurb is Um Mitternacht, wenn die Vogelscheuche erwacht | L21??, which I added manually (and all of them have blurbs available on amazon).

I have noticed that sometimes they don’t pull the descriptions, even on the Japanese side. Don’t have any examples but I’ve added some descriptions manually before too.

I also think I‘ve seen quite a lot of (Japanese) books without blurbs; I always thought that’s the way it is…

Mind making a bug request for this?

Seems like a potential issue for quite a few books.

I hope this is the right place to report: I’m currently getting this error updating my progress on a book. Thank for the hard work btw :flexed_biceps:

I’m guessing that’s because the number of total pages for this book is zero? 40% of 0 doesn’t exactly make a lot of sense as a reading update. You can manually add the total number of pages for this book though, and hopefully afterwards you’ll be able to do your progress update without issues

Thanks :joy: Will make sure I get some rest before posting next time ahah. Didn’t encounter a book without a page count here before, now I’ll know. Thank you!

Even still, Imo that zero pages issue deserves the attention/an eventual fix. So it’s still good that you posted, some it brings it to light

There should probably be an error message anyway in this situation so don’t worry! It would be cool as well if this happened less in the first place (I think this happens a lot with book requests from ebooks, since they’re less likely to have a number of pages and instead may just have the size of the file).

@julien thanks for the note! Yes we should definitely have a better error message than that  And @暁のルナ the zero pages books should definitely be on the agenda to solve..

Possible suggestion: As a quick-fix, you could set a default value of 1 at db-add time, for when the number comes in zero or missing from the import script. And I guess then run a find/replace on the existing db entries

We will be conducting a forums update soon.. within the next few hours. If the forums go down, it is expected. Should last no longer than 30 mins

Technical details: We are moving to a newer and cheaper server.

Edit: First few tests didn’t work. So leaving up for now while I get dinner

A status page would be nice to have, in an external website, like a service status.

“Natively - Up”
“Forums - Up”
“Adding books from X - Down”

Having a message on the service that is going down defeats it’s purpose if you didn’t get to see it before it goes down, and generates extra work for you as people report it multiple times.

Also having a formatted error message instead of a Connection Refused standard message would be welcomed, although maybe this is a one time only thing if you are just moving servers and is pending configuration to do so.

Yeah this migration is a bit hard because we’re changing servers and repointing where our domain goes to.

Generally though, I agree… we could do better on our error surfacing

I’ve done my fair number of moves to cheapen the server back when I had a big website

What I did was put the thing on read only, a message that we are doing migration, and point to the new server where is no longer read only and hasn’t the maintenance message.

It’s a bit of a hack job, but works wonders while waiting for DNS propagation.

Oh, well we don’t need to wait for DNS thankfully. It’s just repointing the elastic ip, so less than a minute… if i do things right!

But yes roger that

Gave up on the migration today, maybe tomorrow…

It happens , tomorrow with a fresh mind and after a cup of coffee,

Could this get fixed? I’m about to start volume 5, so I’d appreciate being able to actually track it
