Product Updates & Casual Natively Discussion

You mean why does it not show your watching activities automatically on the dashboard (old and new)? It was never meant to do that automatically, you need to click on a day to get it to display something. Or… you wait a few days until I get around to displaying your watching activities to the dashboard history automatically

Clicking on a day doesn’t just display something. It changes data by marking the day as read/watched. It definitely makes more sense to automatically pull this data from activity when possible, so I’m glad to hear you have that planned.

Is something up with the Amazon sync queue? I added a bunch of Franco-Belgian comic series two days ago, and several of them still say “Queued for sync” on the series page with the last sync as “Never”, so the ‘series’ is only one volume. For example: Le Meilleur des Pieds Nickelés | L24??

It’s not happening across the board ( Spirou et Fantasio | L24?? has over 40 volumes and seems to have filled immediately), but it feels off for a chunk to be stuck as ‘queued’ for several days when manually syncing things maybe takes a couple hours.

There are a bunch of missing volumes on that series, by the way. However, the interface correctly numbers them (so it goes from volume 2 to volume 6, and the website correctly identifies volume 6 as “6”, not 3…)
That’s a bit weird

So, it looks like amazon canada is giving us a hard time… all the books / series are eventually being created but only after a couple of days. That series you’re talking about @Naphthalene is actually still processing. The ‘Syncing Soon’ is a misnomber.. it’s async processing.. so the rest of the volumes should be created.

Thanks for noting this - I only really see full on errors, not slow syncing. Will look into!

Noooo Canada betraying me :sob: Is it better to submit French books via Amazon FR for now, then?

@Naphthalene Wow I didn’t even notice the missing volumes there! I did think it was weird that the volume count on the browse page said 40-something and the last volume listed was 50-something, but I figured that it was just lagging on updating the number.

Another possible case of lagging in the French section?

https://learnnatively.com/series/0a1e78518d/ was missing ~40 volumes, so I found the outstanding links and requested them, but the librarian response was that the books were already in the system. So if the books weren’t actually missing, why weren’t they appearing on the series page until a librarian changed the series order?

(Also, since book requests don’t require Amazon affiliation anymore, is there a reason to restrict submissions to Amazon FR & CA instead of just accepting any Amazon domain? I included a .com link by accident when requesting those, but thinking about it, I’m not sure why that wouldn’t work the same as the delayed additions through .fr)

I think it’s more of an issue of, the series took a while to sync. Which happens. And afterwards, yep, that series was a complete mess, so I had to change the order of the books to get them back in place.

It would be nice to have the possibility to add books through amazon.com though, especially once the English section goes through, because then we’ll be using it either way.

Yes I suspect that was just an issue of the librarian looking at it later.. and the books were populated in the meantime? Not sure. I have improved the ‘status’ text to be more accurate and to tell you if something is doing a slow sync. I’ve also took measures to change those slow syncs from days → only 1 day, which maybe will help the problem.

We could. And perhaps we will in the future.. but there are a few benefits to encouraging people to use appropriate Amazon country marketplaces

  • Meta data is better - images, blurbs, authors, publishers.. etc
  • More likely to have a series page
  • More likely to be the correct version / language.. if i had allowed amazon.com as a source for Japanese for example, I’m 1000% sure we’d have gotten a lot of english versions of books by accident.

Lastly, the appropriate Amazon country marketplaces almsot always has all the books you need ime. It’s just that with French & Spanish, there are multiple appropriate countries.

If people really do find french / spanish books on Amazon.com that they can’t find on Spanish Amazon marketplaces, I would be very curious to hear that!

That just so happens to be the case with that volume of Fantomette. Which is strange, I’m honestly not sure how that happened, but yeah. Maybe as a librarian only functionality, to avoid potential mistakes? Although I’m not sure how often we’d run into issues like these.

It would be nice to have though, even for Korean, because there are some books published through amazon that just aren’t on yes24 ( Amazon.fr: Hoon Oh: books, biography, latest update for example).

Actually it is on amazon.fr.. you just have to search one of the volumes by isbn!

As for that korean book, that’s very odd.. amazon has like no korean books

It has every other volume except volume 49 (Amazon.com: C'est toi, Fantômette (Bibliothèque rose): 9782010130298: Georges Chaulet, Josette Stéfani: Books) which is not on French Amazon.

I think it’s simply because the author didn’t go through a traditional publisher but directly through Amazon, so his books are only available on there. That means they’re easy to get even outside of Korean though. It’s also nice not too difficult poetry language wise.

Small new bug. The Book/Video dropdown text is now black when it wasn’t before.

Product Update

There’s been a lot going on the last week! Here’s the latest news

  • English is now in beta! Please help us add books, movies and TV shows if you’re interested.
  • Check out the awesome new dashboard in beta that @mathew and @nikoru have made. Let us know your feedback in New Dashboard Public Beta! 🎉
  • Overhaul of the language settings ui in order to prepare for English. You can now set yourself as ‘Fluent’ and can either opt in or opt out of grading difficulty.
  • French beta is continuing strong! We have 19 benchmark book ratings and over 50 unique book series marked ‘fully graded’. We had some hiccups with the French book request system but those all seem to be sorted out

What’s Next

Right now, we’re focused on working out all the kinks of these new launches (Dashboard & language betas).. but we’ll keep you updated! And if anyone is curious, we will probably not launch another language for some time. We want to get our current betas in a really good spot before adding more.

Once again the new language category wasn’t automatically muted.

So this one I don’t think is a bug.. you did have English in your languages right? As native?

It is a bit weird though to auto subscribe to all the English forums

Do I? There’s never been any reason to add a language as native so I don’t think I did that.

Don’t get me wrong, I may keep the English forums visible out of curiosity. But I don’t think I have that included on my profile right now.
