Product Updates & Casual Natively Discussion

Thanks for the callout. Apparently they switched it to new but had a setting to turn it off. Personally i think ‘unread’ makes more sense too.. so i’ve switched it back to ‘unread’.

I’m assuming there’s nothing to be done about this, but somehow the “X remaining new/undead posts” text is no longer localizing to Japanese for me, though everything else is:

The language pack probably needs updating, it will most likely be eventually fixed in a next update.

And it appears I have the same technical issue I have with WK forums now… Sometimes in the (mobile, chrome-generated) app, I randomly lose the ability to select text (like for quoting or copying) - so I need to restart and re-find the post. Anyone know of any fixes or where I could report something like that?

Seems like investigation is on-going. If you want to chip-in, that would be the place I guess.

Thx!!

Mildly off-topic

It auto-translated into Japanese for me at first. I was very confused for a sec  (not that I can’t read it, but like I know Discourse discussion isn’t happening in JP)

Not the first time a website trying to be too smart has been thrown off by my phone’s settings. I was trying to donate to someone’s ko-fi yesterday, and it first Venmo wouldn’t let me, bc whatever they used to connect them was insisting I was in Japan. Took me like 3 tries to get it to work fine

Weekly Product Update

This week was a lot of ideating, bug fixing and small tickets.

Supporter tier has now been downgraded to $1+

Per @shuly’s great feedback, we’ve decided to mark any person who has donated $1+ within the last month to get the supporters badge. We appreciate you all!

We do still recommend $3 a month in the UI but it starts from $1 .

Also, it now backtracks so if you do a one time donation of $12, you will stay a ‘supporter’ for 12 months.

Lastly, I hooked up Kofi donations so they should mark supporters automatically if you prefer to donate there.

Starting development - Advanced Stats, Recommendations, Adult Content Filtering

We’ve got a lot of interesting ideas for these new features that I think you all will love. As mentioned before, Advanced Stats & Recommendations will be plus tier only .. but we’re also overhauling and improving the free stats & browse pages. There will be lots for everyone~

For more information, see the specific product request threads:
Adult Content Filter
Recommendations - Still haven’t laid out all the features yet, but discussion will be here

Advanced stats doesn’t really have a forums topic yet but we’ll let you know!

Upcoming

We’re really focusing on those new features.. hoping to get them all out soon (month?) we’ll see  . Adult content filter will drop very soon.

Shout out to the brilliant readothon @monace ! And thanks to everyone, as always, for all your effort to keep Natively going strong :flexed_biceps:. Hope you all are having a great summer!

currently amazon links end with ref=nosim which apparently means the affiliate is obsolete. not sure if this is a known issue or not

Not every link ends like this. The book I am currently reading ends with: ref=nosim?tag=natively0d-22 which should be right, as far as I know.

Has anyone lost recent ratings on books? Four books I finished in the last month or so don’t have rating, and I’m usually very consistent with rating books when I finish them. If not then I guess I just missed that many, but I wanted to check.

Sometimes I rate a book on the book’s page and when I then look into the list of finished books, that rating does not appear. So I rate it there again. Until now I didn’t think much about it, though.

Oh, that’s weird. I almost always rate on the book page and have never noticed an issue until (possibly) now.

Hmm, that is slightly concerning! We actually didn’t have full history tracking for reviews so I can’t determine for sure. It’s prompted me to add full history tracking for ratings & reviews (a good thing to do regardless), so i’ll be able to determine going forward.

The only one of those where I had any logging data for was スキップとローファー 12. I found your session and I can tell you went to the book page and marked it finished.. but there was no immediate rating submission after that. So if your process is to always mark that rating directly after, one of these two things happened:

  • there was a frontend issue which caused the rating update to not be sent
  • you forgot to rate it

Since it’s the book page I don’t think this is an issue related to the new dashboard changes. Since @mic also reported some strangeness wrt the book page, I will try to look through the code to see if I find anything weird. We’ll keep an eye out. If anyone else experiences strangeness, please let us know!

Edit: upon quick review.. it seems that on iPhone safari, the first click can sometimes trigger the ‘hover’ action, not the ‘click’ action.. which means the rating stars appear filled but it doesn’t trigger the ‘saving..’ action. It’s not consistent but I did replicate it once. Will fix that bug, hopefully resolves issues.

Nice find! I do indeed mark the books as read and rate on my iPhone fairly often.

I use the iPad safari, but that works probably the same.

This should now be fixed! Please let me know if you see it again

Just flagging this again, because that spam list is still the only English list and isn’t a good introduction to the lists feature to potential new users.

Any ideas for real lists to get the English section started? I like making lists, but as a native I’m not really sure what kinds of lists English learners would find helpful.

Oooh that’s a good call! That would be amazing

I think just having a few lists for popular genres would already be a big win, e.g.

  • Children’s / Young Adult / SciFi / Fantasy / Horror / Murder Mystery / Romance / Family drama classics (I am sure you can find a large amount of lists on other platforms for inspiration)
  • The same genres, but with modern / currently popular books?

And if you totally run out of ideas: The Guardian has a list of “the 1000 books you must read in your life”

I just took a look at this list and it feels so random :joy: I’ve only read ~5 books on it glancing through it and I am lost on why they were picked. Like I have read and recommended Three Men in a Boat to people but it’s just a fun book, it’s certainly not a Must Read

I think I’ve read only one in the fantasy/sci-fi section, and that’s what I mostly read in English!
