Quick notice - All search related functionality (books, videos, user libraries) may experience some slowdowns in the next few hours. I’m changing our storage structure a bit (for improved text search) and it requires me to go through and repush the data to our search cluster… leading to slight slowdowns.
Will let you know when it’s all done!

Small Product Announcement
It’s been all-hands-on-deck with launching the New Dashboard which i’m sure you’ve all noticed 
If you haven’t been following, @mathew and @nikoru have been doing amazing work rolling out that new interface. Not only is it packed with new features but it’s overhauled the code & styles, both of which will be slowly rolled out to the rest of the site. If you want to learn more about the dashboard, go over to this thread.
However, in addition to the dashboard, I was able to sneak in another update I wanted to share.
Search Algorithm Overhaul
Thanks to the prompting of @enbyboiwonder , @pm215 and @gillianfaith I’ve gone ahead and fixed up a lot of issues with search.
- Changed our kanji → kana/romaji conversion engine. (now sudaichi package)
- Exact matches are now heavily prioritized for both titles & authors (single character searches like ‘穴’ now return results)
- secret query language - you can use ‘author:’, ‘title:’, ‘series:’ in your search (author:murakami, title:“Harry Potter”)
In general, I think our algorithm is working pretty darn well now! If there are issues, i’m finding it’s usually data quality issues. Please check it out and let me know. I think all search forms for japanese (Kanji, kana & romaji) are much improved!

I noticed that on series pages where the site now lists related works, it labels them “anime adaption” and “manga adaption”. Isn’t the more usual term for this “adaptation” ?

Also imho it should only say adaption if it’s the derivative work. If it’s the original, it should say so.
E.G. You are on the Manga, and the original is the Light novel. There are some weird cases where it’s the other way around.

I think both are accepted 
At least in the tags section, Adaptation and Adaption are synonyms.
These labels are just freely written in by the librarian making the relation group, so the spelling may not be consistently written between groups. Maybe we could make guidelines for it though?
Yes, that’s right! If you come across any that are mislabelled, or have a generic “related” label that could be more specific, please report it (you can just use the regular feedback button on the book page) and a librarian will fix it up. Same goes for if some piece of media is missing from the related section or there’s a wrong book in there.
I know at least for me, I’ve made a lot of relation groups for media franchises I don’t know anything about, so the relation labels are just my best guess

AniList uses the term “Source” for this, which I think works nicely.

Looking it up in the OED I find the remark “Despite the long history of adaption in English, adaptation is now the preferred form”, so if we’re going to pick one I think “adaptation” should be it.

I’m unable to mark シムーン S1 | L32 as Watching. I’m guessing it’s because I’ve previously finished it… But I’ve been able to mark previously finished things as Reading or Watching until now. So I’m not sure why it would be different

Are you doing this from the dashboard dialogs or from somewhere else?

From the Basic Info screen on the video’s page. I mark it as Watching, click the button, but then the status doesn’t update, and it doesn’t appear on my dashboard

Small Product Announcement
While the team has mostly been working through any Dashboard issues this week, there are a few other things to mention
New Support Us Page And Supporter tiers
As mentioned in the past few updates, we’re slowly rolling out some supporter tiers. See our new Support Us page for more details. Right now we only have a ‘Supporter’ tier which has no functional features besides an optional supporter badge as thanks. You can still of course give one time donations through Kofi and Patreon.. but the logic for ‘active’ tier only looks at patreon donations for the past month. Frankly we don’t get many donations through Kofi so i may be phased out.

Overhaul For Verify Email Page
Shouldn’t really impact many folks but we did overhaul this old popup ‘verify your email’ into a new page..
Ideation for Advanced Stats (Plus Members only)
We’re still figuring out what this first premium feature will entail but we’re thinking through ideas like “Month in Revew”, Multilingual Stats, heatmaps, custom charts, “weighted” page counts and stats (by difficulty, media type), comparing two time periods… and many other ideas.
Once we’ve packaged some ideas together, we’ll start a discussion here on the forums
Upcoming
I think we’ll be mostly focusing on bug fixes and Advanced stats for now. I know I want to get back to some small things for admins & our new language grading systems.

Small little weirdness with the Support Us page: navigating to it on mobile through the header menu loads the page without closing the menu, so it looks like the Support Us link doesn’t do anything until you manually close the menu.
