Readathon results
About 12,8 novel pages / hour, or an average of 4,7 minutes / page.
I had to look up a lot of full sentences, the vocab was tripping me up a lot, which made it that much harder to decipher the grammar. But!! I’m happy that I was able to read that much on one day, and glad I could make so much progress in the story, now all is left is the resolution. Who did it? Why? How did the girl find out? Tune in next week to find out.
As for the comic essay, I didn’t think I’d finish it because the vocab is simply not high-frequency enough for me, but I did it! The cuteness carried me over the million look ups.
Next marathon on the agenda is another audiothon towards the end of the year, or early January.

What a sad week for my little boxes. I did listen to podcasts 7 days in a row though! Day 7 was a cheat day really, but I say 5 minutes of listening still counts.
overall thoughts
I started taking taekwondo lessons at the beginning of the month, and even though I’m having a lot of fun, and I was long overdue for regular exercise, I am also noticing that I can only do 4 out of 5: working, studying, reading, socialising, and exercising. And lately the only one I have been willing to sacrifice is studying, so 
Framing it like this makes me feel a lot better with not opening my workbook all week. It’s not like I haven’t been doing anything to improve my Korean either.

Lección de la semana pasada
Esa sesión me hizo darme cuenta de dos cosas:
- tengo mucho más aguante de lo que pensaba, y en cuanto acabe con los paquetes de lecciones que compré, pasaré a comprar lecciones de 1h en vez de 30 minutos.
- por ahora me es útil tener conversaciones “libres”, sin correcciones ni gramática. De vez en cuando consigo usar una forma que aprendí hace poco, o recordar vocabulario nuevo, pero lo importante por ahora es que empiece a soltarme y hablar más. Lo de hablar mejor vendrá más tarde.

Last week’s lesson made me realise that 1. I have a lot more stamina than I thought, and once I’m done with my pre-paid 30-min-lesson packages I’ll start booking 1h lessons. 2. for now I’m happy with free-form conversations, where I don’t receive corrections or learn grammar. I want to feel more comfortable speaking, and eventually I’ll start working on speaking better.

This week my tutor said he will start preparing harder material for me to practice reading / translating since the ones we’ve been using so far are a bit easy for me. I tried to explain that my reading and listening levels and my speaking level are very different, so hopefully the reading next time is more challenging.

의지하다 (to rely on something / someone) → 依

의지 (will, willingness) → 意 (exact same word as the previous one, but different hanja, different meaning, please free me from this hell)

의견 (opinion) → 意

의도 (intention) → 意

의향 (intention) (that’s right, another one, same hanja and all!) → 意
I think this one came up in class but I can’t find an example sentence in my recent books… So I guess I can skip it!!

Expression to learn:
- 예의를 지켜야 하다 - you have to mind your manners
의심 (doubt) → 疑
Example sentences:
- 그 남자도 아무 의심 없이 윤이 어머님이 경적을 눌렀다고 생각했을 거야.
- 다른 사람을 오해하지도 않고, 의심하지도 않고, 나를 미워하면 어쩌지 겁먹지도 않을 텐데.
Expression to learn:
- 아무 의심 없다 - without a doubt
I feel like 의심 is starting to stick because it is coming up so often in my current book. 의지하다 I’ve heard a lot in dramas as well, so hopefully I should stop confusing it with the others soon. 의견 I’ve been SRSing as 의격 for over a month, so… I’m glad it hasn’t stuck

I’ve never had a 30-min lesson (not that I’ve ever booked a 30-min lesson) stretch as much as to 1h45 but 10-30mins extensions do happen in my experience as well.

A 30 min extension seems a lot too, so maybe it’s not as uncommon as I thought. I am actually looking forward to my next lesson on Sunday to see if it was a one time thing of this tutor just really likes to chat

update: I am 
stressed
Work is not going great so I have decided to quit, because if I have to spend another day answering pointless emails I will lose it.
The point is, I am now back to my saving money era, which means no taekwondo, and korean lessons once every other week.
So!! I will now 100% go with the flow, no more checklists, no more listening challenges, just surviving until I get a new job and can get that weight off my shoulders. I think I’ll probably end up reading a lot, which I am not mad about.
Speaking of, here’s a reading update: I am halfway through 열세 살의 걷기 클럽 | L22, which is a really cute book, and really easy level, too. I can read 30 to 40 pages a day without even trying much, so that’s lovely.
Once I’m done (in a few days I think) I’ll start 네버 라이 | L26?? for our BOOKCLUB (join us!!) and see what I am getting myself into.

Thanks! I haven’t actually left my job yet, I’m planning on quitting in November so I have a couple of months to prepare, but it is already stressing me out. Over-preparing usually helps me deal with stress though, so I’ll get on that

I know everyone’s financial situations are different, but me leaving a toxic job was probably the best thing that ever happened to me. I hope it all works out for you and you find a great new position!

update: resumen de septiembre
Here’s an award ceremony for the month of September:

reading: first place, stunning, no one can stop me now.
I read three books, start to finish, two of which novels. Outrageous. Who do I think I am, honestly. -
grammar: at-least-you-tried award.
I did do a review of things, and was quite happy about that. Reviewing is important.
I also managed 4 new lessons at the beginning of the month before falling off. -
listening: you-didn’t-really-try-but-you-didn’t-beat-yourself-up-over-it award.
I was full of good intentions, but in the end listening wasn’t bringing me joy, so I had to thank it and let it go. It’ll come back in time. -
vocab: that’s-actually-a-bit-sad consolation prize.

writing: disappointing. no award.
Output was supposed to be my focus this month, I was so motivated! So excited to write in my brand new notebook! What happened??
These awards look a bit bleak, but in the grand scheme of things I’m not too worried about all that. I still had a very nice month regarding Korean, it all just happened to be related to reading.
The goal for October is to go with the flow, let’s hope I can keep up

Q3 recap
The past few months were the best time I’ve ever had with Korean, it all felt so nice! In August I was in love with my grammar workbook, I had tons of fun with listening, in September I had my best reading month, italki lessons are going well, I feel really really lucky and want to embrace this feeling!
As for vocab, I did my quarterly test, and got an average of 3.308 known words, that’s 384 more than last time
Who knew Summer could be this much fun?
Here’s to hoping I can keep this energy going in the next few months
On another note, and this has nothing to do with any of this, but I feel like these past few months I have seen a flood of really worrying news from the US and the Trump administration (and really just Trump himself), and I hope those of you who live there are keeping safe and are able to find ways to care for yourselves and your communities. If it feels hopeless from the outside, I don’t want to imagine from the inside. So, much love from a stranger on the internet

Tuve una muy buena sesión hoy, de 45 minutos. Siento que hablé más que otras veces, intentando hacer frases más complejas. También siento que hay una par de frases que eran completamente incorrectas e incomprensibles, pero las volví a explicar de otra manera y mi tutor acabó entendiéndolas.
I had a really nice 45-min session today. I feel like I spoke more than other times, and tried making more complex sentences. I also feel like there were a few sentences that were completely off and unintelligible, but I re-phrased them and eventually my tutor got it.
