absolutely, but my brain just went “podcasts & audiobooks”… ![]()
Do you hear that? It’s the sound of the Audiothon bells ![]()
Get your headphones out, we are now live.
I might actually start my own Audiothon in a few hours, or postpone it until Sunday, still undecided.
Does everybody use headphones? So far I never used them, just because I don’t have any. But I know that if I happen to sit nearer to my TV, I can understand things better. So probably headphones will help…
On the other hand, if I talk to someone in person I also don’t hear them via headphones. So not using them might be a good way to practice for reality.
I’ll probably start tomorrow afternoon on my way home from work. I haven’t thought that much about what to listen to: probably just a random assortment of audio here and there.
I wasn’t necessarily planning to join because I already binged the one anime I had on deck earlier this month (メダリスト S2 | L24).
That said, I have some options.
- I could finally watch 響け!ユーフォニアム S3 | L25, though I still don’t know if I’m in the mood.
- I could rewatch 中二病でも恋がしたい! | L28, as it’s one of my favorite anime and Netflix just added subtitles after it came to Netflix without them a few weeks ago.
- I could watch 超かぐや姫! | L30, though it’s just a movie, so I’d have to do something more for it to count as an audiothon.
- I could watch 正反対な君と僕 S1 | L25, even though I don’t know anything about it, but it has good ratings.
Anything else on Netflix JP that you all would recommend? Just no shounen action, anything else I’d consider.
I pretty much always use headphones due to a combination of factors.
- I listen to a LOT of audiobooks while out on walks, I don’t want to be blasting that at passerby

- When I watch TV and movies in Japanese or French, it’s on my computer 95% of the time, and I almost always use headphones with my computer in any language
- Audio mixing is kind of terrible for some things so even in English I
sometimes prefer to have CC on if I do watch it on the TV
That said, I haven’t noticed any issues understanding people IRL despite my headphone habits. The only exception is when people are wearing masks and their words get muffled, but that can also be difficult in English at times…
I’ve gone almost 4 hours of reading this morning. Time to do some SRS and I’m good to start ![]()
Upd: started~
I decided now to just start logging and not care about the 24h window, just to get in some mileage.
20% in and I have to say that without the tag-alongs anime had here, the beginning of Youko’s story is painful to listen to.
It’s very easy to sync with her emotions when we start with extensive gender-based bullying “you have such a bright natural hair color, everyone thinks you are a slut” and just go downhill from there to the plot.
Some generic thoughts
God, she keeps crying “yamete” and well, nothing stops. It’s really not a nice experience to listen to.
Originally in the anime I thought Keiki is at fault here. Now I’m sure Keiki is at fault. He is soooo annoyed at her and everything he’s not even trying.
And also his polite speech needs so much work. What even is this? How is it even called? He starts with ultra-polite verb forms but ends without polite desu. Like “ご無事か” - is this a thing? Bro, 何様 do you think you are talking to your master like that? (I know, I know, but wow that’s so annoying)
There is so much character growth to do, I’m worried that I wouldn’t reach it during this Audiothon
Still undecided when I’ll start. Probably Sunday, or Monday at the latest.
Have fun to everyone already out there!
Okay so, change of plans, realistically I don’t really think starting on Sunday is a good idea, because I’ll be exhausted from the trip and won’t be able to watch any videos, so I think I’ll start this evening! I just need to hurry up and finish something this afternoon, and afterwards I’ll be free to sit down and listen! It’s still not ideal, but I don’t think there’s a better way to make it fit within my weekend.
Finished in 06:01:55 and I’m feeling so depressed ohmygod. Increasing the speed helped me get through the endless despair-inducing scenes but uh yeah, this volume is not a standalone, it should go with the next one.
I’ll pick up it now before my lost faith in humanity gets internalized too much.
I decided Sunday wouldn’t allow me to stay up late watching my show, so I am going to do Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon.
I have no goals, plans, or clue what I want to do, so I think I’ll just bullet list everything as I go.
- 맨 끝줄 소년 Limited Series | L30?? episode 3: 51 minutes
Very lucky that I got into a show right before the Audiothon, because truthfully I wasn’t looking forward to it until 2 days ago when I started watching this on a whim. Now I want to binge it!
I’ve started my audiothon! Not ideal because I still have some things left to do tomorrow, but it’ll do.
And since I wanted to start easy, I’ve been listening to https://learnnatively.com/book/a73a93d730/ . It seemed like it’d be funny and I was not disappointed.
Next, I listened to a very interesting video by the channel Italiano Avanzato. They’re always very interesting because he doesn’t limit the topics he talks about, so it’s very diverse. This one was about how dictators and totalitarian regimes can make use of the law to arrest people for repression purposes.
Finally, I stumbled upon a random Korean video and got curious. The title is jarring, but it isn’t actually saying people shouldn’t read, it’s moreso a video with tips on how to improve your reading comprehension in Korean. It’s meant for natives, but it’s applicable to learners as well and was very interesting to watch.
I would watch the rest of it right now, but I have to go eat dinner, so I’ll get back to listening afterwards!
I’m back after dinner! With another video from the Italiano avanzato channel, just as interesting as the other one. I also managed to finish the Korean video on reading comprehension, and afterwards I went for something more relaxing by the channel 쩜 (this one was on reading gadgets and whether or not they’re worth it).
I think I’ll switch to a drama or maybe a movie for my next stretch of listening. Although I might just get some Japanese in beforehand, to at least garantee that I get some listening time for Japanese.
An update post dinner, and I did manage a video in Japanese! With daily life vocab, since it was a supermarket vlog, but it was a nice level.

I watched episode 3 of Yumi’s Cells, only to find out the rest of the episodes are behind a paywall on Viki… Tragic news.
After that I read/listened to 소리를 삼킨 소년 | L25 and was able to finish chapter 1. I think I’m getting used to the rythm of listening to the audiobook while reading, my pace went from 0.37 pages/min to 0.5 pages/min. I only stop when a passage is too confusing or if I come across a full sentence that I don’t understand, and then I’ll look up every word I need. Otherwise I move on, and things are pretty smooth.
Now I think I’ll go back to 맨 끝줄 소년 for the evening, I only have 3 episodes left.
Snack was a decaf latte and matcha cookie!
- 맨 끝줄 소년 Limited Series | L30?? episode 3: 51 minutes
- 유미의 세포들 S3 | L25 episode 3: 58 minutes
- 소리를 삼킨 소년 | L25 second half of chapter 1: 56 minutes
I have finished 月の影 影の海 (下) 十二国記 1 | L36 now, and my current time on the timer is 11:04:32
I didn’t get to any Hebrew (of course, with 2 whole novels in Japanese) today, but I’ll still have a couple of hours in the morning for that.
As my hands and eyes were free all day, I’ve started to crotchet a cat plushie.
@lumiseterne and I decided that we will be joining by doing an anime marathon. We will be watching some combination of Magical Knight Rayearth 2, Pokemon Sun and Moon, and Mahoutsukai Precure. Pokemon in particular has been in my backlog since 2016, I’d like to maybe finish it sometime before 2030! We will start either during the afternoon or evening hours on Saturday. ![]()
I switched things up a bit by watching an episode of 중증외상센터 S1 | L30 . Technically I have seen that kdrama before, but not with kr subs, so I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to rewatch it and mine some more vocab from it.
Afterwards, I got ready for bed while listening to what I had left of Alpinismo bisexual y otros escritos de altura | L30?? . All in all, it was pretty interesting, quite random as well but I was expecting that from the title already. Perfect as an audiobook.
I also got tricked by Storytel. Which sounds stupid saying it like that, but hear me out. After finishing Alpinismo bisexual, I was looking through Storytel’s recommendations, and I saw La inteligencia artificial y el fin del arte (Salto de Fondo) | L30?? ! Which is right up my alley, it’s basically an essay on artificial intelligence and its ability to generate “art”. Except what I didn’t realize is that Storytel has the ebook, not the audiobook. And yes, I did see that it was the ebook only eventually, but by that point I was too curious so I ended up reading almost 50 pages of the book
. So as you all can see, this was not my fault at all (nor an example of my lack of self control when in comes to books
/s), I just got baited with an interesting book on an audiobook app and that book turned out to be an ebook.

Planning on watching 魔法騎士レイアース S2, ポケットモンスター Sun & Moon, and 魔法つかいプリキュア! with @Kelsy. Let’s see how far we get with these shows in 24 hours.
I still haven’t decided when I’m starting, but I’m planning on splitting my time between Japanese and Korean. I have a bunch of anime from last season that I’ve decided I’m either going to finish or decide to DNF during the audioathon. In Korean I found a preschool show about learning Hangul and I’m going to watch that in addition to some CI YouTube channels that I’m behind a few videos apiece on.
I’m thinking I’ll do my Saturday to Sunday, but maybe Sunday to Monday, depending on if we end up making any weekend plans..
