My time ends in about 30 minutes but I’m calling it now as I’ve got things to go do.
French
A combination of The Mirror Visitor (vol 1), the French translation of Anne of Green Gables, and some youtube videos (none of which I got very into and ended up dropping): 91 minutes
Japanese
Entirely the short story audiobook mentioned above - 5 hours 16 minutes
As expected not a ton of hours, but at least I managed to join one of these for the first time in forever

Mostly some casual listening/watching while doing other stuff or while on trains, except for NO. 6, which I used for more deliberate practice. I love that these books have audiobooks now unfortunately the next one is still 3 months away
Am wondering, does anyone else ever do intensive listening practice, like many of us do with reading? As in, some form of “Listen to a sentence, then look up what you didn’t understand afterwards”? I think with the tools that are out there by now there are fairly convenient ways to do that, but I still wonder how it measures up against “just listening more” in terms of progress
I’ve been trying it a tiny bit with regular novels and I think I do kinda like it - mostly because it means I can use the (audio)books I’d regularly want to read anyway for listening practice as well, while they’d still be too frustrating for me for listening only
I don’t. The closest I’ve ever gotten to that is sentence anki cards. I mostly just find things to listen to that are a little bit hard and just let myself be a tiny bit lost. But I also don’t have the patience for most forms of studying..
I did a variation of this when I was starting out and found it incredibly beneficial, but as with every technique it comes down to how well you can tolerate it.
For me it was listen without text, listen with text, listen again without.
We are done! 3 shows watched across 10 hours and 24 minutes, one of which we finished.

That was fun! It was nice being able to do one of these challenges together. I think that next time I’d like to maybe do something like 5 hours of anime and X hours of podcasts/audiobooks to challenge myself a bit more.
I forgot to post! I started after I got off work Friday and ended yesterday evening. I only got in 2 hours of listening to videos for learners because I just ended a very long week and my brain was just not braining. The week before the readathon was long, too. I wanted to watch some anime with JP subs, but my listening ability just isn’t there yet. I’m getting better at watching things aimed at learners with JP subs, though!
Anyway, I enjoyed reading everyone’s updates. I really should hang out on the forums again!
9:23! 9:47! (I forgot about the last anime episode I watched!) Including 2:30 in Korean
I wanted to break 8 hours and managed to blow past it somehow. I think I only managed it thanks to my walking pad because I didn’t think I could sit on my butt for that whole time.. but I did sit on my butt for a lot of it still
Anyway, the final breakdown. I also snuck in a bit of my audiobook because I really needed to also get some chores done after watching 9 hours of TV
I ended up watching 7 episodes of anime, if I count the one I watched last night. This is pretty good for me. The weather was too nice for me to stay inside all day watching anime, so I really just watched tonight after dinner.
First I watched 3 episodes of 正反対な君と僕 S1 | L25, but it wasn’t really clicking for me. Like it’s cute enough, but it was dragging so much.
So instead I switched to rewatching 中二病でも恋がしたい! | L28, of which I watched 4 episodes.
Agreed! I’m terrible at actually sitting down to watch stuff, but we have a good number of TV and movie enthusiasts on the forum, I feel.
In other news, I listened to an episode of Nihongo con Teppei Z while I did my cardio; I’ve long gotten to the point where he’s no longer challenging for me, but I thought it’d be nice to revisit an episode.
I used to occasionally stream Japanese movies and shows on a discord but coordinating timezones and dealing with audio issues was something of a nightmare. If everyone has access to the same streaming platform and can agree to watch things on a schedule that works well enough, but there are again issues with some shows/movies not being available in certain regions.
Been watching a bunch of YouTube this afternoon; nothing’s really catching my interest though, sadly. Haven’t decided whether I’ll use after-supper time to read an audiobook or not yet; I’d been planning to start one today, but I’m not feeling incredibly motivated for more audio…
