The audiobook review and recommendation thread 📚 🎧

The 死神 series has some medical vocab but not a ton, and most of it you could ignore and just think “this person is dying”.

殺した夫が帰ってきました | L28?? was very easy, I liked it a lot

タイムマシンに乗れないぼくたち | L32 I can’t remember if this had any particularly hard vocab but I wanna say no? Short stories though, not sure if you’re into them

花束は毒 | L28 was an easy listen. I have feelings about the ending though.

ホテル・ピーベリー | L30 I kinda want someone else to listen to this so I have someone else to rant to about the bits I hated :joy: it’s an easy listen though

I’m currently listening to 赤と青とエスキース | L32. The narrators so far are very clear and easy to understand, and I like their voices. It’s a very calm and chill story.

I’ll check it out thank you :heart_hands::smiling_face:

is anyone familiar with 三体?
plot wise it looks interesting but with that kind of plot genre level 30 seems kinda low lol (it’s currently in the “default” value so I’m trying to find more info)

It’s translated from Chinese sci-fi. I’ve only read like 10 pages in English, but it’s almost certainly going to be a high level series. I couldn’t guess more specifically than that, though, since I haven’t actually read them.

I tried reading it ages ago but didn’t get far. I was reading it with my partner who never even started

From memory 30 is too low, but the intro at least only felt like maybe 34-36? Not crazy high but lots of flowery ways of saying things and less common vocab

Grain of salt as this was last year at least

Has anyone ever used https://listengo.dwango.jp/audiobook/ ? I’m trying to purchase 声優ラジオのウラオモテ #01 夕陽とやすみは隠しきれない? on there, but… it seems you have to sign up for their monthly rate, and then also add enough money to purchase the audiobook you want. I’m wondering if I retain access to the audiobook, if I cancel the monthly after getting the audiobook

Their website is maddening, so I’m hoping someone else will have used them, and know the answer… Worst case I can just bite the bullet and finish the book within the month I guess…

They’re terrible and not worth it in my opinion. You don’t get to keep the files, at least when I tried it… 2 years ago? And are reliant on their player which I had issues with having skips.

Gotcha - and I’m not surprised to hear that, given how awful and convoluted their website is. I ended up getting the audiobook, b/c I really wanted to read this along to it. It’s just under 9 hrs, so 念の為に I’ll finish it up over the weekend/next week, and then cancel and run far away from them 笑. I’ll update on whether I run into issues with skips or not.

Thx for info

Update: their player apparently doesn’t save progress between sessions  I’m glad I wrote down my timestamp earlier

I read it in English about a year ago. There’s going to be a lot of Chinese history and philosophy (which regardless of language you may have trouble with without the cultural context) and physics/astronomy type vocabulary. There’s also some police/investigation plot points. It’s hard to exactly pinpoint based on the English translation but I’d guess at least 32, and probably closer to 35.

Given the sale over on Audible, any recommendations for easy books to practice listening with?

Probably the easiest ones I have on my radar to listen to are the 本好き ones.

最弱テイマーはゴミ拾いの旅を始めました is probably also easy given the nature of the work, but I find that series very boring, although it’s quite popular, so probably I’m in a minority here.

Other than that, there’s 転生したらスライムだった件, which is probably only easy if you are familiar with the world, otherwise is one of those works which are very hard to follow due to the sheer amount of characters alone.

There’s a bunch of stuff I have purchased there that I haven’t gotten to it yet sadly, work has been a nightmare, and seems like it will remain like that until October.

What level are you comfortable listening at?

are the easiest non-children audiobooks I can think of, right now.

I really enjoyed ちょっと今から仕事やめてくる.

(I don’t have access to the .com version of audible, so I am not sure those books are available.)

I’m not entirely sure at the moment, sadly. I’m in the “hoard resources” phase of practicing; next step will actually be listening to it all. :stuck_out_tongue:

Dang, neither seem to be available through Audible US. :frowning:

oh no…

2 more I just remembered:

I made a list a while back that I try to keep updated, but it includes a few children series.

Any particular reason you’re trying to go through Audible US rather than JP?
