Manga #2 finished! This time volume 16 from my beloved D.Gary-man series. This is a rather serious part of the story, so I completely forgot that one of my favorite mini-arcs (the zombie one) shows up here! Things are going to get pretty heavy again afterwards, but I’m coming up on territory I’m only partially familiar with- I’ve re-read these first 16 volumes or so many times in English, and volumes 17-20 a few times, and the volumes after either once or not at all, so I’m looking forward to refreshing my memory and finally moving on to new parts of the story.

Oh I forgot we can make checklists here, I want to join in on that

My higurashi tbr… First, the core arcs:

I do not have the two last (and longest) arcs 祭囃し編 (8 vols) and 皆殺し編 (6 vols). I miiiight buy these later.

I do have some extra arcs which I also intend to read

I also have another extra arc 心癒し編 however, I think it’s meant to be read after the core arcs, so I might save that for later if I get the last 2 arcs (then again, I know what happens in them so I might also just read it, I just don’t consider it part of the tbr currently)
Last item in the tbr is a random manga my friend got me before that I tried before and couldn’t get into. I think I want to give it another try. I don’t remember it’s name right now I’ll just add it here when I get my hands on it.

I just checked my book shelf and these are the books on my radar. I have loosely tackled reading down my TBR in the last years, but this year I was buying more than I could read :joy:

Novel series

Novel singles

Nonfiction

The third volume came out just yesterday! So there’s yet more to enjoy

Oooh, I have willed volume 3 into existence, I guess. Thanks for the heads up!

Great thread! I may have already gotten interested in one of the books here though, uh-oh

I want to read any 3 of these by the end of the year:

X 小説 とんがり帽子のアトリエ スペシャルストーリーズ KCデラックス | L30

ミモザの告白 4 | L28

ミモザの告白 5 | L28

チヨ子 | L28

終焉ノ栞詩 欠落-Re:code- | L26

X The doujin novel my mutual wrote.

Couldn’t figure out those fancy checkboxes so I have mouths instead  And here’s the thread I made with the full list (not including manga) not knowing this one existed.

I love the ingenuity :joy:

To get an empty box you use two braces [ and ] but without the “and” there

To check it off, you put an x inside:

You can also quote part or all of someone’s message to see the markup that they used to format it.

Reading my TBR and not buying books went better this year than it did most of the past few years!
I purchased only 10 of the 50 books I’ve read so far in Japanese this year. The rest were from the library, my bookshelf, kindle unlimited and audiobook.jp’s (I know those last two cost money but it just feels different).

Books I own that I finally read:

I have also been reading (10 years on my TBR!) since June, but it is very dry and slow going. I’m not sure if I’m ever going to be able to finish this one. :face_holding_back_tears:

I am very hopeful about reading even more from my TBR in 2026. Time to start thinking of a goal.

First one down:

It wasn’t even a hard one! Just.. not my format I guess.

Can also do :white_medium_small_square: :white_medium_small_square: and :white_check_mark: :white_check_mark: emojis

Btw I mistakenly thought this was the “what should I read next?” thread, and kept trying to tap the boxes, wondering why it wouldn’t work

Wow! Thanks for the tips. Now I can create a list here too haha. I previously used emoticons :white_check_mark::cross_mark::joy:

:x: Manga #5

Phew, two more down last week! I meant to update several days ago, but I got sick while visiting family and just didn’t have the energy. :skull_and_crossbones: So my final total was four physical manga read, not bad, self. I was all ready to read #5 if I hadn’t come down with said illness but eh, what can you do.

5 was wonderful, as always. Where is #6, I’m ready. ;_; DGM 17 was a bit too intense for sick eefara, but I powered through. :flexed_biceps: I’d forgotten just how serious the story gets…

Anyway, that’s a wrap on my manga reading challenge last week! I think it went really well; I read my initial goal plus one, and I definitely had to power through once or twice when I wasn’t really feeling like manga specifically, which has probably been my biggest blocker towards actually reading stuff.

Now that December is finally here, I’m at 36 volumes of manga read out of my goal of 50, so I still have some work to do. I’m 14 volumes away from meeting my goal, and with 4.5 weeks in the month, I’ll need to read approximately 4 volumes per week to finish it all up. Not insurmountable by any means, but I’m definitely going to need to set aside some manga-only time to make sure I stay on track.

I guess my only hesitation at the moment is that there are a few series (like アスタリスク | L25) where I’ve read part of the series years ago, and I’d like to re-read the earlier books to refresh myself, but I don’t really consider them part of my unread TBR, and thus wouldn’t be able to count them as part of my goal. And when I need to read four volumes per week anyways (+ reading regular book club picks and whatnot), the pages pile up. There’s nothing stopping me from counting them, I suppose, and it would be easier in the long run…

I say you count the rereads if it’s in service to getting to later volumes in your tbr.

Well, if shitsurei says it’s okay… :eyes: I’m thinking I’m going to use that logic. It’s not like I’d finish reading through my physical manga quicker if I weren’t counting them, and as I move more towards working on series rather than singletons, this issue is going to keep popping up.

Ah, what did you think of this one?

It was cute, but I don’t feel a huge need to read more.. I did quite like the anime, so maybe start there if you haven’t seen it.. I impulse bought a bunch of them during a golden week sale at some point, so I’ll probably read through what I have.. but yeah, I think I don’t click with 4 koma, and I wish I had known that before I got them all..

The preview is so misleading… I would have had no clue it’s 4-koma, if you didn’t say anything. It looks like I could enjoy it, so added to my wishlist… Idk why I never ended up watching the anime when it was out

Btw, general thanks to ppl for posting here. My reading time has been more limited than usual lately, but this helped remind me to make some light progress on https://learnnatively.com/book/4c32f014a2/ (not super interesting) and 大阪豆ゴハン(1) | L24?? (slow going, since it’s all handwriting, and not the easiest content). Now I’ve just got a catch up with 明日もまた勇者のとなり 1 | L26 for the book club

Yeah, there are like regular manga spreads that connect the chapters, but most of the chapter is written as 4 koma. Like I said before, it’s not hard 4 koma at all, so that’s really nice. But I get into a “Welp, I read a page” mindset and then just don’t go any farther, unlike if the exact same story was paneled like a regular manga. :woman_shrugging:t4:
