Grammar Q on page 124

I’m having trouble with this half of this sentence:

なぜ、家の中にいてそれがわかったのだろうと今では不思議に思うけど、

This is on pg 124 of my copy, right after she realizes the girls from school have come to her house.

Is she saying that it’s strange that they know she’s home? For some reason it feels like there are a lot of little parts here that I’m not putting together

Here’s the whole page:

Answer!

The key is understand what それ is referring to!

help

If you look at the sentences before, she’s talking about recognizing the voice of someone from a different class that she doesn’t know very well. The sentence after also describes her feeling like her sense of sight and vision are heightened due to her fear. So, それ is the fact she recognized who was yelling her name even though she only knows their face and inside her house and can’t even see them…hence starting with 家の中にいて

My answer is all vibes cause I have never been great about studying grammar but basically my take is that she’s like ‘why did they know I was inside the house’ I now wondered (she’s kinda emphasizing ‘now’ in a way that feels weird to put in an English sentence, but it’s like, she’s belatedly thinking, ‘huh that’s weird, how did they know?’)

OHHHHH なるほど when I read the sentence the first time that part wasn’t making sense to me so I just kept rereading it without looking at the context again. The それ in the middle of the sentence definitely threw me off. Ty :folded_hands:

That’s what I originally thought it was too but with bungaku’s context it seems like 「家の中にいて」 and「それがわかった」 are talking about different things. She’s in the house, and she knows [the voice]. Not that she’s in the house, and they know [that she’s in the house]. That’s definitely what tripped me up.

Thanks everyone for the help! :folded_hands:
