Questions from this week’s reading:

 1. Why did Madoka go back for her books? When she returned to the scene, what was strange about it?
 2. How did Madoka describe the boys, and what did she do to escape from them? What would you have done in her place?
 3. Now that you’ve read a few pages, how does the difficulty compare to what you were expecting?

Discussion Guidelines

 • Please blur/hide any major events in the current week’s pages (however early they occur), like so: text here (that’s
text here
).
 • If you have a question about grammar, vocab, the story, cultural things or literally anything else related to the book — ask! There is really no need to be hesitant. If it’s something you are wondering about, chances are someone else will be thankful you asked first, lots of people enjoy answering questions, you learn something new, and the thread gets more lively. It’s a win-win on all fronts!

Finished this week’s reading and came up with some questions to test comprehension and spark discussion. Try to answer them from memory before you go back to check the book, and remember to hide your answers with a dropdown or spoiler tag!

I’m confused. Page 11 is the end of chapter 1 in my copy, and the line you have listed is on page 19? Do we need to line up the digital and physical copies?

I think the page numbers are different in the Kindle version and the physical version. We’ll read until this line: " 眉をひそめるちゃん". It’s on page 19 in my Kindle. Right before a picture of 2 girls.

I found it! It’s in the middle of the page in the physical copy on page 19 if anyone’s wondering.

Should I post the table of contents for the physical so we can line up the page numbers?

It was hard! Probably a bit over my level, but still easier than the previous club. I tried to follow along with the werewoolf book, but it was way too hard. Given that the werewoolf book was level 26 and this is 23, I hope I’ll be able to keep up with the club this time. I’m glad that we don’t read too many pages per week, so I have the time to re-read this week’s pages!

I found the werewolf book subjectively harder than a lot of these other children’s novels! Usually children’s novels are straightforward and easy to follow, but because that one had a lot of back-and-forth discussion of who the werewolf is it was trickier imo. This one should definitely be more approachable.

I’m back, now that I’ve actually read the right pages! :running_man:

First of all, so glad the children’s book club is back, I was missing having my saturday morning reading assignment during the break!

I already listened to the audiobook of this so I’m interested to see what details I pick up reading it. In this section, I noticed that ヒカル is described as androgynous, I had missed that in the audiobook. Another thing I like about reading the actual book is looking at all the adorable illustrations! Japanese kids books have such good illustration game.

The werewolf book is did get moved from 25 to 26 after the club, so it was a bit more challenging. It was about at my limit to read comfortably so that feels like a good grade for it to me. I’ve also only listened to this book but I think on average it’s going to be easier than the werewolf book was. There’s some school subject talk at points in the book that I think will probably be the most difficult part. I def let that fly by when I was listening and it didn’t impact my understanding of the plot at all.

comprehension questions
 1. She went back for the books because she couldn’t sleep that weekend.
 2. I’d have to reread for the exact descriptions of who’s who but the math boy I think has sharp eyes and the science boy has neutral eyes. The literature boy has a kind look and the geography boy had a fancy look. She ran away from the boys after telling them they have the wrong person.
 3. It’s not quite as easy as I thought but it shouldn’t be too much to keep up with

I first heard about this book through soggy and it seems like a fun premise. I’m surprised by how many books are in this series though. I would not be able to keep up with this as an audiobook alone. I still have to do lookups and I’d lose track of that in listening.

I like the part where a bunny on a vine comes in from outside the book and corrects her for having the wrong word インゲン versus インネン

My guess is that they stop being about textbook boys and start being just standard romcoms with textbook flavor.

That’s a good idea. I read on ttsu which doesn’t have any page numbers, only percentages, so the best I can do is use a percentage to calculate an approximate page number. I’ll update the schedule with the physical page numbers.

I put it in the home thread!

Madoka’s solution to the boys trying to “インゲンをつける” (thank you usagi-san, would not have had a clue what she was talking about without the correction!) made me laugh out loud. It was both unexpected and adorable. So far I’m really enjoying the sense of humor that this book has.
