Discussion Guidelines

 • Please blur/hide any major events in the current week’s pages (however early they occur), like so: text here (that’s
text here
).
 • If you have a question about grammar, vocab, the story, cultural things or literally anything else related to the book — ask! There is really no need to be hesitant. If it’s something you are wondering about, chances are someone else will be thankful you asked first, lots of people enjoy answering questions, you learn something new, and the thread gets more lively. It’s a win-win on all fronts!
 • Don’t forget to put on your club-supplied cat ears for a more immersive experience while reading. You will find them under your seat.

Apologies for the slightly longer week. It couldn’t be avoided, really; it was either this week or next week, and I think it works better this way with a proper ◆◆◆◆ stopping point.

Well now I’m glad I made sure to get caught up

Thoughts while reading

If that’s not a good beginning after all that dreadful training, I don’t know what is.

Yes! Very good. Proceed.

You know what? I’m not a fan of overly detailed long training sequences, but I can appreciate that Nyango slowly gets closer to becoming an adventurer. It kind of feels… realistic in a way? He’s not suddenly unexplicably able to go out on adventures and fight monsters, but it’s a step by step process.

Hopefully this step will be more exciting than the training sequence though

That’s my Nyango.

It’s interesting that it’s engraved into the liver of all things. I don’t think “liver” would make my “top things to metaphorically engrave something” list

Welp. So much for “it’s safer if he doesn’t join”… :smiling_face_with_tear:

Seems like someone wanted some adventure too.

I’m actually surprised he managed to make it into the air at all!

Nyango…

Well, this week was certainly was a lot more action and more interesting to read about than that dreadful “we watch Nyango’s very slow training in real-time with detailed commentary”. First some internship-style monster suppression, and then Nyango gets to fight for real much, much sooner than he should’ve, with stakes so high that he cannot even run away!

It was definitely a more exciting read this week then the previous ones. I have to admit that with the long training sections, but also with the fighting in this week, that sometimes I struggle a bit with visualization. Maybe because it’s in Japanese… I just start feeling lazy at times and skim through it. Fortunately we occasionally have images

As someone with aphantasia that’s normal for me. My favourite thing in books are usually dialogues and characters interacting with each other

And it’s time to finish this chapter!

I feel like I have hyperfantasia (2/10 don’t recommend) and I also prefer the dialogues… mostly bc they’re the easiest to read

Can’t recommend mine either; let’s split the difference and average out on both of us arriving at normal phantasia?

Ok this was a longer section than I expected so I kept getting stalled out.

Thoughts

Ummm… Maybe I’ve just read too many thinkpieces about how orcs and goblins are people too, because I was kind of like :fearful: about how they just slaughtered this whole goblin camp unprovoked, starting with the children!! And then were like cutting their bodies apart and ripping out their magic stones! :fearful: Kittyboy nyango assists with ethnic cleansing…??

Also, when the injury happened, I was like woah, woah!! Then I was like wait, he did have an eyepatch on in the cover of the book, didn’t he :joy: Totally forgot about that.

Answer

Yeah, apologies for that! Unfortunately there was no way we could’ve stopped in the middle of that pretty exciting last section, so it was either “shorter than usual” or “longer than usual”.

At least the next one makes up for it by being shorter!

Yeah. That got pretty raw there.

At least they did have a reason, unprovoked or not: If they don’t do it, those goblins are gonna get hungry in winter… and then they’re gonna start killing and eating the more defenseless folk on the outer edge of the village.

Well, they say that, but what else have we done to stop the goblins from starving? They don’t only eat people, because it says they fish and stuff. Maybe if we taught them to farm and preserve food or something they wouldn’t starve in the middle of the winter. Maybe this is systemic oppression of goblinkind!!!
