The fact that 天’s friend is a mountain god made me wonder whether perhaps 天 is a 天狗… I don’t think the author has ever given us any information on what 天 and 燦 are, though they’re clearly not human.

I imagine this will come later on, but indeed, we barely have any information on them apart from physical description and a few personality traits. I also wonder if it’s just Mei’s character, but she doesn’t seem to show any interest whatsoever in what they are or perhaps even getting to know them a bit more? In this chapter, she was reflecting about how Ten is able to take care of the whole place almost by himself - this made me wonder how she had never thought about that for the months she has been working there. Thinking about it, I must say it feels a bit odd, especially considering how she bonded so quickly with 石長姫.

From what we know about Ten so far, my money is on kitsune. Bright orange hair, 吊り目 (another word for which is キツネ目), clever, and how he was willing to humor a 邪神 staying in the inn to steal gold.
I do really love the idea of him being a 天狗 though. Especially since 大天狗 are usually mountain guardians—which fits in an inn-keeper, and in some stories they steal children. It would be funny if given Mei’s naive nature, paired with him being centuries old mythical being, he just sees her as this poor little lost child he keeps underestimating.

San is a complete mystery though.

Also this 100%. It would be nice if Mei showed a little more interest and curiousity towards the other characters or features of the inn

The fact that she is young looking and lives in a traditional Japanese house (well, 旅館, I guess) made me think of 座敷童子, but there’s indeed no clue.
