I started reading 氷菓 | L34 a few days ago, but stopped it after a couple chapters. Just decided I’m not in the mood for it right now (you can see my review for more info). With the JLPT three weeks away I feel like I should read something harder (氷菓 doesn’t feel like a 34 except for random vocab), so I’m currently looking at the highest level items on my TBR and might make a poll or something later if I can’t pick one.
It’s such a shame. Seems like the Anime was way better than the book for what I read around.
My question is if it gets any better as you go through the rest of the volumes… as is something that’s been on my TBR pile for a while, but that kind of feedback makes me gravitate to other things.
About 氷菓
I don’t know about the rest of the series, but iirc I thought it improved about 2/3 through the book. A liiittle bit too late really, but I did end up buying volume 2 eventually. I’ll get to it at some point.
I did go in not knowing the anime, and I don’t think it made any difference to my enjoyment from what I can tell. The ratings are very consistent over the board.
To contribute to the thread:
Today I read the first volume of ぼくたちの死体さがし (amazon link, requested but not on natively yet) which they goaded me into with kindle unlimited. D: It was very good! A psychological thriller/‘treasure’ hunt for YAs, from the feels of it. The art is very pretty too. TW for kidnapping of and assault/murder of children.
And since I recently finished 2 books I’d been chipping away at for what felt like (and, you know, was) months and decided it was time to get back onto the book club train.
So I started medium 霊媒探偵城塚翡翠 | L33, 痴人の愛 | L43, 月の裏側 | L30??, 傲慢と善良 | L32, あなたも殺人犯になれる! | L28.
My plan for the rest of today/the week is to catch up with medium, read a good amount of or maybe even finish 64 下 | L38 (another book I’ve been dragging out for months. There’s not even a good reason for it, I’m enjoying it! It’s a great book, I guess I just wasn’t in the mood for much reading for a while.) and, uh… Probably start むらさきのスカートの女 | L29 and mayyybe アステリズムに花束を 百合SFアンソロジー | L30?? when I’m done with those…?
I feel like I’m forgetting a book club I meant to join…
Do let me know how it fares compared to Vol. 1!
Maybe it will move up in the TBR list .
Finished my first L30 manga!! I’m gonna hold off on the rest of the series for now. and have added the LN to my “goals” list.
If you’ve seen the anime, it’s pretty much identical. If you haven’t, I highly recommend it!
Continuing with Japanese history manga:
Trying to pace myself with it, so I actually retain all the info. Some of the vocab has overlapped well with 薬屋のひとりごと… and I’m guessing some will overlap well with 後宮の烏 (series) | L34 when that starts up
Finished all of SAO Fairy Dance, and slowly reading along to the audiobook for ひげを剃る。そして女子高生を拾う。, which I’m enjoying! Working in 男子だと思っていた幼馴染との新婚生活がうまくいきすぎる件について | L30??, and when I finish ひげを剃る, I can finally get back to SAO Progressive 1 (original plan was to do that after 男子… but I forgot that 男子 is a series, and I’ll probly read all 3 vols. back to back)
I just read the first two volumes of ぜんぶきみの性 (series) | L22 and I enjoyed them. Will definitely continue with the series for now. It’s a tad ecchi for my taste, but nothing egregious and it kind of makes sense given the context, so for now it gets a pass. Difficulty-wise it’s very easy. Even has furigana for everything, so should be a good manga for people who don’t have a ton of reading experience.
I also started 【推しの子】1 | L29 and damn is it hard. Even having already watched the anime I need so many lookups. Not that I was expecting anything else, but still… I bought the first three volumes already, so I’ll read those and maybe volume 4 (since that’s what the anime adapted) and decide whether to continue based on that. It is a long and frequently published series, so not sure yet whether I really want to deal with that.
Lastly, I started rereading/skimming the end of 本好き 21 as a refresher. Once I’m done that I’ll finally jump into the next arc. It’s been over two months since I read a novel/LN in Japanese so it’s nice to get back into it.
I’m currently reading 本好きの下剋上 4 | L30 and am really enjoying it. It’s my fourth volume in the series this month and my seventh book this month overall. I’m not sure what’s caused it, but I’m reading more than ever before right now!
I also hit 100 books read in Japanese (manga and novels)!!
Congratulations! What a milestone
That’s awesome, congrats! Feels so good to break the three digit mark, right?
And I just finished it, right on time too.
I’m going to keep my full comments for the book club but I hated the ending.
Trying to make it spoiler free, but it’s still a spoiler, so don’t read if you haven’t finished the book
Here be dragons
I can see why a lot of people would love the ending, but in my case, it’s just the author going “hey this book is actually a fun twist on [trope]! …. just kidding テヘペロ it’s [boring business as usual]! Bet you didn’t see it coming!”
That’s not the own you think it is.
Anyway, time to move on to 香君(下).
I totally agree and also didn’t enjoy the entire experience of reading that book very much back when I read it (not with the club)
Still working my way through ongoing books, but wanted to ask - would anyone out there be interested in reading チュベローズで待ってる AGE22 | L33 together relatively soonish (next few weeks)? I missed the bookclub for it on WK but it seems like it’d be fun to read with other people just to share commentary on the drama. Come on, any host club fans out there who wanna read something seemingly questionable/trashy?!
Normally I would be interested, but I think I’m far too busy this December. It looks like a really fun book from all that I’ve seen, though.
Starting in Jan, Feb or Mar would also be cool with me if we plan ahead!
Keep me posted if you don’t end up reading in December; I’ll have to see what my upcoming months look like, but they should be free-er.
I might be up for it then, but similarly it’s still hard for me to tell
It depends how you want to organize it. If there’s no schedule or you plan to take at most 3-4 weeks, then sure (then I can just borrow the book from the library).
I’m really building up too much of a 積読 pile, so I’d rather not buy even more books (and reading ahead of or behind a group isn’t fun )
(Other than that, I don’t mind starting whenever)
I was thinking of an informal club where anyone can read along at their own pace but share commentary.
Then I’m in, sure.
Hmm I think I’ll set up an informal thread to start Dec 1st then! @eefara and @yukitanuki if/when you want to read later the thread will still be there so we can all casually share our thoughts and catch up in our own time.
