What are you reading today?

I just finished 本好きの下剋上 volume 25. Not a particularly interesting volume unfortunately, but they can’t all be great.

Not sure what to read next though. Might read something in English for a bit before picking up another Japanese book.

Question for @bibliothecary or @shablul or anyone else who answer: in 魔法少年なつき×らびっツ 1 | L24 , there’s some sort of near-constant みーん sfx is most scenes なつき’s in. What the heck is that supposed to signify?

Ah, then I’m afraid things will feel a bit slow for a volume or two, then  But as you said, it happens!

Either なつき is secretly a cicada, or it’s just summer: みーん.

Recently finished:

  • 気になってる人が男じゃなかった 1 | L23 - loved it! Was disoriented at first b/c I forgot it was 4-page chapters. Was surprised to read a story centered around the (American rock) music I heard/listened to as a teenager. In some ways, it reminds me of an American graphic novel (the full color definitely contributes to this). Also one of the leads reminds me of Dabin from Kidults. Edit: I finished vol 2… it was good, but I liked vol 1 better… excited to catch up w/ recent chapters
  • ケイヤクシマイ 3 (MFC キューンシリーズ) | L24 - this was better than the previous 2 volumes
  • 赤髪の白雪姫1 | L26 - found this suprisingly hard, but unique and enjoyable. Anime is easier (less ambiguous wrt context, setting, speaker, etc). Afaik it’s a romance, but it’s moreso a story of friendship so far. The protagonist reminds me of things I like about Mao Mao (薬屋のひとりごと) and Yona (暁のヨナ), and while she sometimes gets assistance from the male lead, she’s not a damsel in distress!
  • ぼっち・ざ・ろっく! 2 | L28 - past the end of the anime now. Bocchi’s identity as ギターヒーロー just got revealed. Looking forward to seeing where it goes next volume!

I honestly assumed cicada noises

Thanks guys! I’ll have to double-check to be sure, but I think it shows up even when he’s indoors. Are they loud enough for that to be reasonable?

Haaaah, same here. I’ve been so tired this week. @.@

No idea, to be honest. But I’ve checked a fan translation of the manga, and they translate it with “chirp” everywhere.

Yes.

in a lot of Japanese media I’ve seen (drama/anime/manga) the noise is in the background even inside but I’m not sure if it’s an effect for the sake of signifying “summer” or if they’re actually that loud

so imo even if they’re not that loud it’s still a “summer sound effect”

Let me rephrase … they are absolutely that loud. :joy:

Although, I am thinking of east coast North-American cicadas. I suppose it’s possible they’re quieter in Japan, but I kind of doubt it.

Mm they’re loud there too

Just read the last chapter of 宝石の国 that came out yesterday. It’s definitely become one of my all time favorite manga series. I’ve been following the chapters somewhat since the anime came out so it’s hard to believe that it’s actually over :sob:

Being extremely vague about the ending, despite all the pain and everything that happened along the way it managed to wrap up in a way that doesn’t feel empty. :face_holding_back_tears: My twitter feed is absolutely full of spoilers now so I’m glad I read it early. Though it is really nice seeing everyone’s different theories and interpretations now that I’ve read it.

現実もたまには嘘をつく | L22 is too good for its own good. I read all four volumes in just 5 days. Unfortunately it just releases once a year, but as luck would have it that tends to be around June, so hopefully there’s another volume within 2-3 months.
