What are you reading today?

Mm I feel like she may have said that in the manga too… But it didn’t really show that.

If my wallet wasn’t totally devoted to ガールズバンドクライ and トゲナシトゲアリ I wasn’t so overextended on physical purchases right now, I’d totally buy Revolution and read those instead. Reading digitally has been fine too tho, and it’s easier to keep track of lookup frequency that way

I’ve been reading 黄泉のツガイ 2 | L25 and man, it’s so good (and hard to stop). The first volume was good too, but kind of blindsided me by being like a really easy L21 in the first few chapters and then suddenly jumping straight up to L25 for the last one or two, but now that I’m used to it I’m really enjoying it.

And I love all the characters. Especially the murder goblin. Gets woken up in the middle of the night by scary-looking enemy creatures, flashes a grin, goes straight into (murder) business mode. I really wouldn’t want to be on the wrong side of those teeth.

Ooh, I really want to read that series! I’ve loved 鋼の錬金術師 since seeing the anime years ago, and just finished volume 5 of the manga today. I think I’ll buy full sets of both soon so I can binge read at leisure

Oh, and 百姓貴族 1 | L34 by the same author is also fun, but I found it much more difficult language-wise. I should go back to this one since it’s been a few years since I read it.

There’s also 銀の匙 Silver Spoon | L30, which is a bit easier. I watched most of the first season of the anime but couldn’t keep going for farm related reasons.

I read あした愛かもしれない【電子限定描き下ろし漫画付き】 | L20

Actually I solely bought it just because I liked how the couple looked (one of them reminds me of my kpop bias) and because it was highly rated.

It’s such a cute and fluffy read, might be the most wholesome and endearing BL I ever read. Their relationship is so healthy and green flagged, it’s such a healing comfort read.

Made a little progress with よるクラ | L28?? (more like L24). Keeping up with 雨でも晴れでも | L22 book club

Finished ch 1 of わたおし | L33 (which of course means 37% of the book :sigh:). So far it’s felt easy to read (even on the pages with 20 lookups), as long as I don’t space out too much. I skimmed the magic lecture and battle parts, since I already knew them (the magic vocab is very simple). Unless this gets harder randomly, It feels more like L31-32, instead of 33 (for comparison SAO is L33/34, and is much harder than this. 転生王女 is L33 and somewhat harder. ログ・ホライズン L33 also felt substantially harder, but that was back in January)

Impulsively started 平民のくせに生意気な! | L30??, which I read 10 pgs of, and then decided I’ll just read piecemeal. To my surprise, it doesn’t contain all the scenes with Claire and Rae.

additional impressions (spoilers)

I like the tone of Claire’s narration a lot more, since she’s a much more expressive/amusing character than Rae. Also it’s interesting seeing her prejudices, and seeing how she confronts them, when she becomes aware of them. So far she’s never questioned her prejudice against 平民, but she did examine her prejudice against 同性愛者 (while still being like “no, I’m anxious bc this woman is constantly harassing me”), in the scene where Rae explains that she is actually a lesbian, and also she’s never thought she even has a chance with Claire, since that’s always how it goes.

So far Claire thinks her prejudice is natural and justified, but she feels a bit bad for Rae, seeing how she tries to put a smile over her dejectedness, and hearing her mutter that it would be nice if she could like someone who could reciprocate her feelings for once.

Interestingly Claire says (internally) that she’s never had feelings for a girl before, but adds “well there was that one time with onee-sama, but that was a misunderstanding”… I’m really interested to read Claire’s perspective during that whole fiasco. In the anime it seemed like she never truly stopped having feelings for Manaria, even after learning about her gender.

For example: ch 1 in 平民 ends at the scene where Rae discusses that she is indeed a lesbian, with Misha, Reyne, and Claire, whereas わたおし additionally has the whole magic lecture, 魔物 battle where Rae calls on her for help, and Rae having to explain she’s raising the baby 従魔. Also something that’s different between the anime and the LN. I’m the anime after the battle, Rae accidentally interrupted Claire and Thane’s moment. In the LN, they have their moment, and then Claire is simply waiting, worried, for Rae to return. I’m really surprised they didn’t include that in 平民

Started わたしが恋人になれるわけないじゃん、ムリムリ! (※ムリじゃなかった!?) 1 | L24 (Watanare) manga… which I’m not sure is a good thing, and can’t promise I won’t drop

Finished 雨夜の月(7) | L23 and read all but the current chapter. It’s definitely become a favorite! Unfortunately I read most of the volumes in quick succession, so I’ll have to flip back through them soon, to write up reviews

I am about halfway through 阿修羅ガール | L30?? now and it is one of the weirdest books I’ve ever read. Very chaotic and experimental. It kind of reminds me of a cross between 夜は短し歩けよ乙女 | L42 in terms of surreal happenings and early 綿矢りさ books like 蹴りたい背中 | L31 and インストール | L28 since the narrator is also an early 2000’s high school girl. The plot is basically something like, (mild plot spoilers but nothing that isn’t in the blurb) high school girl is worried about her crush liking her, but suddenly ends up in the middle of an “armageddon” aka full out brawl, instigated by people on what is clearly 2ch/4chan. Then everything goes way off the rails?

I’ve never been super into very experimental stuff so I’m not loving it, but I’ve got a niche recommendation for you all! If you enjoyed the anime フリクリ S1 | L33 you would most likely enjoy 阿修羅ガール. (Oh god, do people still even watch FLCL? Am I aging myself? It was like, THE cool anime for for tasteful connoisseurs back in my youth. :joy:)

I couldn’t stand it back then, but I’m mildly curious if I’d be into it now (not enough to actually watch it tho  )

Same tbh :joy: except I saw it on Netflix Jp a few years back and watched the first two episodes again to see if I appreciate it more now. The answer was no. I am just doomed to be one of those people who don’t get it.

I cut my teeth watching weird adult animation on Adult Swim, and FLCL fits right in there (although I’m pretty sure they never aired it there…). It’s for all the millennials who (like me) love smash cuts and things that are “so random” and don’t make a lot of sense but have a lot of style in the process.

I feel like I heard that there’s a reboot/sequel or something coming this year or next? So I guess so?

Thank you for confirming I shouldn’t try watching it again :joy:

Speaking of reboots… They’re apparently rebooting Ranma 1/2 - which idk how I feel about (but I’ll probably check it out anyway)

They already did うる星やつら, so I’m not at all surprised. I hope they don’t try and reboot 犬夜叉, although they did just do a sequel series so I think we’re safe.

With Sailor Moon I liked the old version more. Even though it was more meandering, it has more soul, imo. I suppose I’ll watch らんま but I won’t have high hopes.

They’re rebooting everything these days! I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, but FLCL feels like a weird choice to reboot and make a continuation of since it was so random.

I’m a millennial too, but I was always more into battle shonen and having crushes on the cool male characters.

I did like that anime! (well, I only saw 4 episodes because I didn’t have access to more than that at the time, but never felt the need to finish the series; I did enjoy it though)
Anyway, I had already wishlisted the book last time you mentioned it :stuck_out_tongue:

I mean, also me. :joy:

Confession: I’ve never seen or read sailor moon… Someday I’ll read the manga or watch the old series tho (nothing against the reboot, but like I should have watched it back in HS)

Ranma I’ll probably watch like an ep or two of. Btwn still needing to finish the manga and the original show, I don’t need a 3rd iteration of it in my life

I can’t imagine them rebooting Inuyasha tbh, and also don’t think I’d watch that. I love the original too much (despite some adaptation choices). I’ll definitely reread the manga eventually tho!

I think I was in a very sweet spot for age on Sailor Moon, plus it being really the only shojo that I had easy access to at the time, I fell deeply in love. Objectively, I know it’s not for everyone. The show is a lot, and there’s plenty that icked adult me out on my recent watchthrough. I’d def take a filler-free route through the series, but even that would be probably more than 100 episodes. I also think it peaks with Super (season 3) but I’m also a Neptune/Michiru ride or die, so ymmv.

tl;dr it’s worth trying (esp because it’s a pretty easy watch, language-wise), but if you’re not into it by the time they’ve gathered the first 4 senshi, it’s probably not worth your time.

In my own case, my middle school friends weren’t really into it, and I don’t think it was still airing by the time I was in HS. I missed that and CCS… Which tbh considering how much they censored/doctored stuff back then, maybe isn’t the worst thing

It’s 90s shoujo - I’d be shocked if there wasn’t :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

For the old show it’s apparently almost 50/50 filler/non-canon… which is just over 100 eps lol

Any idea about how far in that happens? I usually try to give shows at least 3 eps, unless I drop them within 5 minutes :joy:

Basically the same boat here. I saw a couple of episodes as a kid, but never really sat down and watched it. Same with 犬夜叉 (Though I saw a few more episodes of that).

Definitely going to read and watch it, even if it does take me a while to finish. It’s an important series that made a cultural impact, so it would feel wrong to not go through it at some point.

This has me a bit worried. How bad is the ick-factor?
