Ah, that’s true. I had a whole bunch of new home threads to set up today, but that would definitely come in handy with week updates.

I’m probably going to need to do so with at least Children’s and 癒し系. That can wait until next vote, at least.

Why are we all talking so quietly?

It’s one of about 6 yuri LN series with audiobooks on here (unfortunately it’s not showing up in that search, b/c I had to manually add an audible link, and it doesn’t count as “Amazon Audible” under provider) - and it’s a good level for me!

Story

Surprisingly it’s set in a zombie apocalypse - 2 girls and a magical penguin. The MC for ch 1 is pretty enjoyable - she’s been picked on, and is moderately jaded, but not exactly pessimistic nor stoic; she’s neither a hero, nor selfishly against. There’s been a few times where it’s felt emotionally unrealistic (like you just watched your school get slaughtered by zombies, had your keychain turn into a giant magical penguin, got magic-swallowed by the giant penguin, and finally regurgitated in your house. There’s no way your first reaction to the penguin becoming small afterwards is “omg so cute” while also not being paralyzed in shock afterwards), but it’s not enough to detract. She vaguely makes me think of 猫猫 from 薬屋のひとりごと, and the setup kinda makes me think of 裏世界ピクニック - tho I wouldn’t say they’re necessarily alike (and this is way easier). Anyway whatever it is, her first person narration is hitting a sweet spot for me. Also the chapters are short (not like 75-150 pgs), and divided into sub sections. So it’s easy not to feel overwhelmed.

As an audiobook

The audiobook is pretty great so far, and has multiple narrators (one of whom is 青山吉能 (Bocchi from Bocchi the Rock)). The narration is nice, and definitely has character to it. The main narrator is a bit less meticulous about pronunciation than other audiobooks I’ve read - specifically she devoices a lot. That’s nice, but I’d definitely be lost without the text. There’s been a few loud screams… but it’s a zombie book, and it hasn’t been overbearing. It feels really easy to get through and visualize what’s going on, and I can get by without lookups. If I were reading w/o audio, I’d be looking up, but I’ve recently realized that lookups during audiobooks are unhelpful for me (too disruptive).

『人斬り』少女、公爵令嬢の護衛になる | L28 - I’m not far in yet, but I have a feeling I’m gonna drop it cuz of the writing style and just read the manga instead. Maybe it gets better after this first section, but there’s a lot of unnecessary repetition/restatement of information already (half of which is basically “the MC is awesome” - yes, we know)… so it’s iffy.

…huh. That’s a new one.

Is this zombie apocalypse + fantasy? The girl seems to be carrying a magical staff. Or does it belong to the penguin?

That vaguely makes me want to read it. 猫猫! :heart_eyes_cat:

I’m more concerned by the high powered weaponry the girl on the left is carrying :joy:

It’s basically urban fantasy - she can do magic stuff, and the other girl has a gun. The penguin is magical in its own right

I won’t promise they’re actually similar… but she did make me think of her for w/e reason. Maybe it’s the like "softly cold and analytical, prioritizes self-preservation out of necessity, but doesn’t necessarily turn a blind eye to others

I mean she’s gotta survive a zombie pandemic somehow. Both of them are pretty deadly tbh

I mean, that’s just your zombie apocalypse standard issue weapon.

I don’t know but I like it

I kinda want to read it but my Zombie apocalypse weapon of choice would defo be a bow, unless that gun is super silent :joy:

It’s definitely not, but that’s not necessarily always a bad thing. The two leads meet b/c magic girl heard gun girl shooting zombies, and she saved her with magic

Started on Bookwalker with チ。―地球の運動について― 1 | L31 which is free for volumes 1 and 2 through 11/5 (at least). Little furigana. Fairly tough manga. Did volume 1. Not a fan of the art style.

Read the second volume. It was better than the first and more well-planned out it seemed. The pacing was better. Still not really appealing to me. Will try something else soon.

I started reading わたし、定時で帰ります。: ライジング | L35 in order to fill in my last bingo square and oh man. I had forgotten how much this series makes me want to scream at the characters. That does make it fun to read though.

I’ve been making some progress on that. I’m currently 400 pages in, but it’s hard to stay focused. That book is the poster child of my arch nemesis: character viewpoint changes and flashbacks. It goes constantly back and forth, introducing new characters as it goes. Every time, I end up putting the book down and reading some other random thing.

The good thing is that it meant that I could more easily focus on the book clubs I am part of. I also ended up making good progress on ドグラ・マグラ | L50??, reaching the 80% mark.

Finally, I read 1/3 of ループ7回目の悪役令嬢は、元敵国で自由気ままな花嫁生活を満喫する | L31 yesterday. It was waaaaay further down my 積読 pile than I expected. In my mind, I got the book just the other day… but I guess not.

Fun fact, searching through my Booklive stuff made me realize they provide stats about my books. Sadly, it’s a number of series, not books, and excludes all the “free to read but not keep” ones

Type Number (series)
女性向けライトノベル 29
男性向けライトノベル 21
少年マンガ 16
少女マンガ 16
青年マンガ 16
女性マンガ 16
BLマンガ 16
小説 10
SF・ファンタジー 7
BL小説 2
TL小説 1

Damn, manga series are perfectly balanced as all things should be (it’s honestly the thing that made me feel like posting this). I was surprised that I don’t have any TLマンガ, but then I remembered the ones I read are either free to read not to keep OR categorized as 女性マンガ (in many cases, I am completely unclear as to why some made the cut and some didn’t…). In that sense, I feel like my 女性マンガ number are kinda inflated compared to the rest… but it’s probably compensated by the fact that I read those physically

What counts/gets grouped as TL seems to be even more arbitrary than what’s an LN vs novel :stuck_out_tongue:
