What are you reading today?

:scream: I was just at a comic book store yesterday and almost bought the Spanish version purely because of the cover.
There is a Korean translation, which I’ve just wishlisted, thank you for the rec!!

(ALSO it seems the korean library here has it in stock… :smirk:)

I hit the halfway point on ノルウェイの森 | L32 , and I’m still not sure if I like it. It feels LONG, but pretty straightforward reading. The protagonist seems just along for the ride, I hope I get a better sense of him by the end. I reached the obligatory Murakami awkward handjob scene (I say obligatory, but I’ve only read this and Kafka by the Shore, and they both had it, so I’m calling it a trend).

I think I’m mostly enjoying the book, but wish it were over already so I could move on to other things.

I totally confused book titles in my initial reply and it wasn’t relevant. Sorry about that!

Continuing to read Naruto. Not sure if I can finish 18 volumes in a week… but I am going to try. It is taking me about 2-3 hours for some of the more lengthy books now.

I’ve taken a quick peek at the first story, and I think I’m definitely down for tomorrow. I’ll probably be reading through the whole book afterwards as well!

I finished reading 図書の家選書9 涙の讃美歌 立東舎 | L22 today, which was originally published in 1956; it’s part of a series of re-prints of vintage ‘ballet manga’ (although the ballet only happens at the end of this one). It was a lot wilder of a ride than I was expecting, and I definitely want to check out more of the series.

One of the things that tripped me while reading it was the lettering, because I’m not used to reading words being constantly split across lines like this:

Oh sorry, I somewhat got sucked into another book and only halfway through remembered my original intention! Nevertheless, there is still some time left in my “today”, so why not! Let me quickly open a thread for us

Well, I am now down with ループ7回目の悪役令嬢は、元敵国で自由気ままな花嫁生活を満喫する 4 f | L30
I thought It took a while to get through, which I blamed on me not getting much free time these days, but it’s only been 3 days, so it’s still more than a hundred pages per day. Good enough, I guess
I guess the impression of slowness comes from the writing. The fight scenes? Great. The romance scenes? Even better. Everything in between? Meh at best. The plot this time revolved around a gambit pileup which would have worked in the favor of the antagonist if he hadn’t randomly started explaining his plan giving time to the main character to save the day.
I still liked the fun parts enough to give 5* to this book, though.

I immediately started the next volume, but I should really get back to 聖なる黒夜 上 | L35??

I have three different book clubs (for 水車館の殺人 | L35 本の読み方 スロー・リーディングの実践 | L36 and 理由 | L34 ) which all start next week, as well as the ongoing 神様たちのお伊勢参り | L30?? club. So obviously at the tail end of this week instead of continuing to read short stories from 或る「小倉日記」伝 傑作短編集1 | L30?? since I’d already started it, I instead chose to start two new books by reading the first story out of 木になった亜沙 | L27 and then beginning 吸血鬼は泉のごとく | L25

I see no problem here. :sunglasses:

Same here. :raised_hand: 水車館の殺人 | L35 and 理由 | L34 are starting real soon, and 理由 is really intimidating, so the best course of action is to start 秋の牢獄, instead of finishing any of the other books I’ve already started to better prepare myself for next week…

Apparently the author of No. 6 might be writing a continuation series! I haven’t read the original novel (it’s been TBR for a while now), but I’ve read the manga in English and remember really enjoying it.

Oh wow! That’s interesting considering how old these books already are. I still haven’t finished the series, but I’m still planning to. Maybe I’ll even make it in time for the potential new one??
Also, what’s this about a musical? :joy: Apparently it started today? Wild

I did read some of it, until a part where (keeping it spoiler free) they are interrogating an attractive woman. The main character then thinks that her suit is so modest/conservative that it loops back around to being sexy.
Man, there’s really no way to win…
Then the next thought he has is how it looks like buttons from her jacket will pop out any moment from the pressure of her massive rack. Okay.
The only question he personally asks her is about her love life and unrelated to the case.
I was starting to hate the main character less, so, perfect timing for the author. I wonder if it was calculated (like, we are not supposed not to hate him)

This reminds me of a book I read earlier this year where male characters kept commenting on how macho and unfeminine the MC lady was and how  hot :hot_pepper: it unexpectedly was… I left that book with the firm impression that the author had a type

The author of 聖なる黒夜 is a woman apperantly. Dunno if that helps at all, it may be written from her perspective of men, rather than actually sexualizing the character (though maybe she’s got the hots for women in conservative suits, can’t rule it out!)

I am aware! That’s why I’m thinking it’s more about providing some “insights” about the MC rather than actually objectification. Plus, all the spicy :hot_pepper: gay sex that happened so far (in the parts from another character’s point of view) makes me feel like the audience who would genuinely like that kind of description is already gone by this point.
(I may be wrong though)
I do think like the author being a woman makes those scenes seem even less realistic though

I just finished 愛するよりも愛されたい 令和言葉・奈良弁で訳した万葉集, which was very entertaining. It’s a book that translates several poems from the 万葉集 into a) 若者言葉 (i.e., slang) and b) 奈良弁.

All of the poems center around romance and I laughed out loud while reading some of the more ridiculous ones, while others were more poignant. My review goes into more detail on the book’s structure, but I’d definitely recommend it!

I started a little bit into 水車館の殺人 | L35 as the book club starts soon, but after reading a few pages I don’t think keeping up with the schedule will be a problem. Compared to 理由 | L34 (which I’m reading with an informal book club) it’s honestly a breeze. I suspect 理由 might get a rating bump and 水車館 might go down…or possibly just needs to be graded separately than the first book in the series? But I’m only a few pages in, maybe it will throw me a curve ball.

I also started 琥珀の夏 | L28 again after a break. It continues to be a very slow burn. I want to finish it, but I can’t say it’s drawing me along much. I think if something is going to be a slow burn I need more tension or more intriguing characters to stay invested. Right now I feel I’m lacking in both.
