Nice!
I did my own readathon on the plane, so no updates. Instead, here’s the list of what I read (in order, with some thoughts)
6 | L26 I’m still somewhat ambivalent on this series. There are elements that I really like, but they feel under exploited. For instance, there’s a part where one of the bad guys (?) manipulates 橘 by modifying his childhood memory of 神宮寺. Aaaaand (s)he has one conversation with 神宮寺 and shrugs the effect off, which feels a bit underwhelming considering how much build up we had to that conversation. That being said, as a result of having cleared some negative feelings (s)he had for him, (s)he now also gets the 魅了 effect when looking at him directly. That leads to a great line when 神宮寺 asks 橘 now refuses to eat face-to-face:
今まではおまえが魅了にかかっても俺がセーフティーになってたけど
けど今は!
2人同時に魅了にでもかかってみろ!
ふと正気を取り戻したら幸せな家族を築いてる可能性だってあんだぞ!
そうなったら責任取れんのかおまえ!!!
(Emphasis mine). I mean… where’s the downside? 橘 had a very short thought in volume 4 about how is attraction for the princess and for 神宮寺 feel different, which must be because the former is “real” and the latter is due to the curse… but that’s also not explored very much. Still, I’m probably going to keep going with this series.
L18 I was really looking forward to this volume, which is probably why I feel disappointed
It was okay, but story-wise progress that build up until the previous volume come to a brutal stop and we get some round-the-mill slice of life instead… It’s fine and there are some cute parts, but that’s not what I was hoping for.
(1) | L23 the first 6 volumes are free to read on booklive, so I checked the first one, especially since I have heard that series title a lot in the past. Well, I sadly didn’t like it. Not only do we get the typical issue of having a basic banal bland boring main character, everyone else is comically weird with name puns (like, one character is childhood friend with everyone in the school and their name is literally Osana Najimi). That was too much for me.
レトロゲ(1) | L27 got that one from @暁のルナ (I can’t remember if it was a direct recommendation or if I just got curious about it). The first 6 chapters were a bit frustrating as they followed the pattern of one character explaining stuff about retro games and expressing an opinion (which I generally agreed with too; I guess I do not agree that the Dreamcast failed because it was white, but that’s just because the character doesn’t what to say she doesn’t know) and getting rebuked by the other character using an obscure bit of knowledge. The first character then admits defeat before the second one always close with “I thought you would know that” (which seems like foreboding, I guess) + the recurring gag of the teacher saying “err class is about to start”. It’s especially frustrating because the extra bit of information, while fun, doesn’t change the fact that we are discussing opinions, which are thus subjective. Just because the original famicom had some specific limitations doesn’t change one’s opinion of the “most representative game of the console”. There’s even one omake panel showing that the first character, playing again through DQ5, still has the same opinion as before… so why did she admit “defeat” when there’s no defeat to be had?
Things do get better from chapter 7, though, where the focus is more about the characters rather than their knowledge of retro game trivia. I will maybe read the second volume. I wonder if the series is complete? There was only 3 months between volume 1 and 2, but it’s been almost one year since then.
2 | L21 Squeezed that one in just before the deadline. I thought I’d read it since volume 3 came out. Except for some dragon-related stuff at the beginning, it was pretty much your average high school slice of life. It was well executed though.
So that was 7 manga volumes. Some fun parts, but not the most memorable reads overall
Oh well, it happens.
