What are you reading today?

I kept meaning to reply but life is quite rough right now.
Nice! It looks like you did enjoy it :stuck_out_tongue:

And it just keeps getting better in volume 2!

Hmm, I don’t know. He seems to be pretty much not doing anything with potential love interest back home. Must be his hobby to leave them hanging. In that sense, at least, he is being consistent.

Agreed! I read the books along the audiobook just for his voice :joy:

That first part is good news for me but… that means the series isn’t completed then? That’s a bit disappointing. I don’t want to have yet another series hanging

As mentioned in my post above, life has been rough, so here a simple version (that makes it less spoilery too).

Major volume 1 spoiler

Now that you know that (spoiler tags for the random person clicking here) magic exists in-world, the following goes from being a major spoiler to a meh whatever *shrug* spoiler.

The パルゥtree is a magic tree that grows delicious fruits, but they are frozen in place. You need to “warm them up” with bare hands to take them; there’s a reason for that, but it’s not really important. When exposed to the sunlight, the tree will start violently shaking to throw its fruits as far as possible, triggering their magical component and thus destroying them (presumably as a way to spread seeds, but I don’t know or remember the details). So, people have to go pick up fruits before dawn.
It’s funny that マイン is given basically the explanation above, but is just unable to make sense of it due to the magical component, which she didn’t expect (neither was I).

I finished both 穏やか貴族の休暇のすすめ。 | L31 and FLESH & BLOOD 18 | L35 over the weekend, which means my book slate is completely open. I’ve decided to start わたしの幸せな結婚 | L31 as my next book + audiobook and probably 妖魔と下僕の契約条件 1 | L30?? as my next regular book. Haven’t started the latter yet, so I might still change my mind, but if I do read it I’m thinking I might use it as “shortest on my TBR” bingo square-wise. I don’t know if it’s actually the shortest, but 218 pages is pretty short.

Yay, I finished 星のカービィ あぶないグルメ屋敷! ?の巻 | L21. I don’t know that I’d recommend for people that are already reading adult books, but for a kid’s book it wasn’t bad. Very goofy. I was not expecting Metaknight to use 私 for a pronoun.

I’m going on a trip soon, so planning to read manga until I get back. I’ve already started on 赤ずきんチャチャ 2 (りぼんマスコットコミックス 694 ) | L18 and I’ll see what else I have time to read.

私, read as わたくし, I‘d guess.

It was just plain ol’ わたし. I guess because he’s gentleman?

Kirby used ぼく and King Dedede used おれ様. I don’t remember which Waddle Dee used. There was a わたくし pronoun person who was the not-so-surprise villain. The story really did end with the power of friendship and a song, but mostly because Kirby’s song was so bad it made the cave they were in collapse and the villain surrendered. Kirby really is the world’s cutest menace.

Did this book answer whether Waddle Dee is a friend or a foe? NOT REALLY.

This kind of makes sense actually. In 本好き, all the male nobility use わたし (the women use わたくし). It’s only the lower classes that use おれ. So with Metaknight being a knight it kinda fits.

That totally fits. :joy:

No 吾輩s? I’ve never read, but from a distance it seems like a story that could use them.

Hmm… Interesting… I will admit I’m a fake Kirby fan and I didn’t know the reason Metaknight wears a mask is because he’s hiding that he basically has a cute Kirby face underneath. I kind of love him now. Poor guy ended up playing straight man to Kirby and Dedede’s shenanigans.

I wouldn’t rule it out from future books. There are a lot of Kirby novelizations it turns out.

I haven’t played a Kirby game since the SNES, but Kirby Super Star was one of my favorite games at the time. Kirby Dream Course was also fun, but kind of sadistic. King Dedede and Meta Knight are both so iconic.

Yeah I won’t lie I tried to read it a while back, after reading Winnie the Pooh no less, and it just felt too young for me. I notice that’s happening more frequently now that my reading is getting better. The kid-ness in kids books is much more noticeable. Even the 世にも奇妙な商品カタログ books that I own, that I’m trying to finish up this year, feel very basic in terms of plot and stories now. Characters also repeat themselves a often and it’s kind of getting on my nerves. I guess it’s a good problem to have?

Update on reading 7Seeds. I’m halfway through volume 2 and I’m definitely seeing the level 27 difficulty more. Once they started going into the events happening and what project 7Seeds was I had to slow down pretty substantially. I can probably still finish it up within the next couple of days though. It’s spring break for me right now, so I’ve been splitting my time between a lot of different things.

I finished 魔王は扇子で蕎麦を食う ~落語魔王与太噺~ | L28 today, and you can see Athakaspen's review of 魔王は扇子で蕎麦を食う ~落語魔王与太噺~ | Natively for details, but I enjoyed it! The rather revealing illustration of the heroine in the カラー口絵 made me worried at first but the story itself didn’t lean into anything uncomfortable for me. It was also a remarkably easy read, probably some of the quickest-to-read prose I’ve seen in awhile, and I’d be interested to hear from someone who doesn’t know much about Rakugo going in if they feel the same.
I’m most of the way through the last volume of 本好き too, which is a very comfy and satisfying read. Even though there’s a lot going on it’s just nice to see all the 神殿 and 下町 characters again

Manga, I read やがて君になる 4 | L22 (continuing this steadily) and お兄ちゃんはおしまい!: 9【イラスト特典付】 | L21 since last update. I also went to three different Bookoffs hoping for a set of 異世界美少女受肉おじさんと | L26 with no luck, so wound up ordering 1-6 from a seller online just now. I’ll probably re-read book 1 to when it arrives before continuing into the series, it’ll be recap from the anime so these first 6 should go by quick :dash:

Maybe I’ll check it out at some point. I have basic knowledge of rakugo from two anime (one covering the topic seriously, one silly comedy), but I don’t know the ins and outs of the medium and I definitely don’t know the terminology.

Hit the 25% mark for ソードアート・オンライン4 フェアリィ・ダンス | L34 - which covers through Kirito & Leafa’s accidental excursion to Jotunheim (not adapted in the anime). Reading along with the audiobook, so approx 7 hrs left. It’s great that it’s been from Leafa’s perspective so far, and next section is Asuna. The audiobook speed is definitely a bit quick for me, but I’ve read it in English before, so I’m not worried about missing small details along the way. If it weren’t for the audiobook, I’d put it off a bit longer though.

A collection of multi-chapter short stories from 1930-40s. The first story (4 small chapters) 忘れぬ眉目 was a story of unrealized feelings between 2 school girls of different social classes (one played the 琴 - cool!). Next story is called 天国と舞妓. Anyway the reading level for the first story was surprisingly easy (upper L20s), so assuming it stays that way, I’ll end up requesting separate grading

知ってびっくり! 日本の歴史のお話 後編 | L21 - 3 stories in. The most recent one was a 戦国時代 rivalry and military battle thing that really would have benefitted from a map and names chart (they at least had footnotes specifying “location x is modern day y”… but still). Also why does everyone in older(?) Japanese history seem to end up with multiple totally different names?? Hard to keep track of

マリア様がみてる 34 リトルホラーズ | L29 40% in. So far so good, not all the side stories are horror. Only reason I’m not done yet is bc I’ve been obsessively watching ベルサイユのばら, which I’m gonna start the manga | L32 after I’m done.

Also will start 美少女戦士セーラームーン 6 | L24 soon

It is on my list, but idk that I’ll get to it anytime soon. Will let you know if I do tho

Niceee, the manga is lowkey better than the anime which is saying a lot, because the anime is also good. Cue dramatic harpsichord music

Oh? I’m quite interested then - especially since with おにいさまへ it was largely the opposite. The manga was brilliant, but the anime brought it to life really incredibly! Tho I wasn’t crazy about certain changes the anime made towards the end.

Anyway I’ll be finishing the anime tonight, so maybe I’ll start the manga right after. It will also be the 2nd highest level manga I’ve read (first is 薬屋のひとりごと 1 | L33)

The manga gives the story more room to breathe, which made the last arc more emotionally impactful to me. Felt like Oscar and Andre were also developed more, so some elements of their relationship had more dimension. Will be curious to hear your thoughts!
