What are you reading today?

Oh, good to know. Found the direct link (need an account to view). Pretty sure that’s 3-5 (the current arc is 革命 I think, which is the end of LN 2)

Edit: tho it still doesn’t necessarily mean all the volumes. After 革命 arc would be a very natural stopping point. In any case I’m glad to hear it

始まっちゃった… the story starts with a マリみて reference (fixing her tie scene), but no similarities otherwise so far

I just found out a one-shot I read last year in コミック百合姫2月号 became an actual manga:

Love the style, so I guess I’m starting another?? (Someone stop me lol)

The leads are quite different than I expected, and have a rather unique dynamic. Also I didn’t realize it was going to be quite so ensemble cast… I’m only on ch 8 rn, but I’m gathering this series’s whole thing is being 1-2 chapter vignettes of various couples, with the leads’ story weaving in and out? (It reminds me of 少女セクト | L25 (NSFW) in that sense)

Vol 1 started with a タイが曲がってる (マリみて reference), but the only thing they have in common is the integrated middle-high school + college. Anyway, if I’ve got the pulse of the series right, I’ll probably pause it after this volume, until I can buy the physicals

Been catching up on the CBBC book of 時間割男子 and read the first 4 chapters (equivalent to the first 3 weeks of the book club) since I’m now up to date on Silent Witch.

I think it’s definitely easier than 人狼サバイバル 1 絶体絶命! 伯爵の人狼ゲーム | L26 , but even accounting for that, it’s nice seeing that there’s a novel that I’m reading… easily. Especially after サイレント・ウィッチ kind of took a lot of effort to read, it’s a nice palette cleanser and point to reflect that yes, my ability has still grown since last year.

Finally finished 水属性の魔法使い 第二部 西方諸国編5【電子書籍限定書き下ろしSS付き】 | L35??, the last volume of the arc and the last volume I own in the series. Most of that volume was from the point of view of the other characters we left behind for most of the arc, and all they do is fighting. They are about to lose when the main character almost deus ex machina teleport himself across the globe to save the day just in time… before getting teleported across the globe in the opposite direction into act 3.
Kiiinda boring (and disappointing for an arc finale). I gave the author the length of the free preview of the next volume (last published anyway) to convince me to keep going, but that didn’t happen.

At least, I am now free™, so I can try to catch up with book clubs.

Been a while since I last updated~ I’m in between vacations and work has been awful, but I’ve been able to find a little bit of time in between to read a bit.

Finished

  • 妖魔と下僕の契約条件 1 | L29 - Took me about a month to finish; I’ve been hoping to cut that time down in general for novels, so I was kind of disappointed it took me so long. I realized I wasn’t reading every day, though, so I double-checked my data entries, and it only took me about 10 days of actual reading to get through, which I’m quite happy about. It’s a short book, granted, and one I’d already read in English before, but it’s a better perspective of time than taking the non-reading days into account as well. If I can remember and can set it up, it’d be neat to do an experiment at the end of the year with an approximately same level of book and same number of pages and compare my elapsed reading time then.
  • I’d really like to start another light novel, but as I’ll be traveling in about a week and a half, I don’t think I’d have time to finish it, and I don’t want an unfinished book hanging over me when I get back; I’d rather have that feeling of starting a shiny new book.
  • デビルサマナー葛葉ライドウ対コドクノマレビト 1 | L32 (whoops, somehow forgot about this one) - Reading in celebration of the game remaster. 1/6 volumes done.

So for right now I’m mostly focused on book clubs:

I finished my second book in Japanese! Once I got used to the lack of kanji, it was a really easy read and I really enjoyed not having to be glued to a dictionary. Wrote a review: cloverff's review of たまごの魔法屋トワ 1 | Natively

Although I may have messed up the grading a bit because I thought it much easier than manga at a similar level.

Moving on to 魔女の診療所 こまったコ、大集合!? | L20?? which seems to be in the genre of 青い鳥文庫 child labor novels. But this time, with a witch!

I know exactly what you mean (and have a few suggestions if you want them later).

I’ll hit you up for suggestions in about 4-6 weeks, if the speed at which I read my last two books is any indication.

Two chapters into トーマの心臓 | L24?? and I’m really enjoying it. It’s got a lot of interesting dynamics going on already, and I’m really curious how things will unfold

My yuri manga switch flipped, so I guess I’m taking a bit of a break from the novels rn

How to solve a love triangle. It’s a rare polyamory yuri. I liked it well enough, but I would have liked to see more of the afterwards explored.

It’s by the author of あの娘にキスと白百合を | L22 - which I just started book 5, but may wait to order physicals next month. I wasn’t very thrilled with volume 3 (tho the leads’ development was great), but otherwise I’m really enjoying the format. I like that the side characters still have some relevance, even after their particular story/volume ends, and the main couple stays relevant. Anyway it’s a pretty unique approach to storytelling

Almost done with vol 3. It’s really cute so far. I didn’t realize the eventual couple is set up so early in the story. I also might wait to order the physicals before continuing

I caught up with the most recent chapters, and left a review. Tldr: very shoujo, very yuri, I love it!

upcoming reads, some of which I've read in English before

I’m really curious about this… I watched the anime and got no indication of a coupling. I’d like to know what kind of setup there is. Feel free to give me spoilers up the three volumes you’ve read.

I thought this manga was alright. Definitely felt a bit shallow. Here’s a similar manga (that is equally just alright) if you’re interested. I originally bought it just because of the cover.

Idk how to answer, It may be a case of it seems obvious bc of prior knowledge. I haven’t seen the anime, but Akebi’s chapters with a certain character are different enough from her interactions with the other characters, in a way that you can tell there’s probably something deeper between them. Their meeting is also highlighted in a unique way . I can expand a little more, if you want me to tell who is involved.

Agreed. I’ll check it out. Does it also go the poly route?

It’s Erika, right? Honestly, I’ll probably never read the manga. It’s a bit too ecchi for my taste, given that the characters are in middle school. There’s way worse out there of course, but still. Also, the mangaka seems to have a foot fetish… You do you mangaka, but I find it a bit weird. (Sorry for the random rant )

Yeah, though again I emphasize that it’s not amazingly done.

Yea. I’ll expand a bit more then. Edit: will also add that a lot of it is in the paneling, which is hard to describe here

details

I assume the anime has that same first encounter with the weird clipping her toenails in the classroom, and like they have their whole conversation, and sort of bond a bit before everyone else shows up… And past that point, when they’re all talking together at lunch(?) in class, Erika is pretty intensely focused on her, and kinda mentally fretting over whether she needs to protect her from the other girl, and iirc Akebi picks up on it a bit.

While Akebi already has close moments with the other characters, via spontaneous interactions, with Erika the two have to deliberately make plans, on a non-school day, and are both very concerned about making a good impression. Also their plans get cancelled cuz of the rain the first time, and Erika is really down the whole day, to the point that her other friend ends up telling Akebi later on.

Prior to that, Akebi talks a bit about Erika at home, and the family wants to meet her (something that doesn’t come up with other friends so far), and when she does come over, they’re very quickly calling her Erika-chan, and like sharing the photo albums and stories with her and stuff. And Akebi expressing jealousy over her family calling her Erika-chan before she had the chance to.

Then there’s their whole exchange where they agree to call each other by their first names, and again it’s a very deliberate, going out on a leg kinda thing. It’s all right as they’re starting to drive away, and they can’t take their eyes off each other, and are having what’s basically a really intimate moment, at a time you’d normally just be like waving and saying good bye.

Edit: and the thing where Erika is intensely fantasizing about playing piano accompaniment for Akebi’s dancing, and then gets asked to

I’ll be the first to admit I read with yuri goggles on at times, but like it definitely seems like there’s some setup there to me

It’s interesting cuz on one hand there aren’t really like typical panty shot, boobs bouncing, accidental pervert, etc moments… But like yeah there are a few scenarios that are a bit ??? Tbh I’d heard the anime is on the ecchi side, and it’s one of the things that put me off from trying this earlier, tho I vaguely recall ppl saying that this isn’t really present in the manga anymore (I may be misremembering tho?)

I’m a little curious to watch an ep or two to see how it compares

Noted / assumed as much

I heard it the other way round, and I don’t remember ecchi contents in the anime. So far no one gave the anime that tag.

Got it. Sounds like I’m mistaken then. I did see a review of the anime that pegs it as ecchi and fetishized, but upon further reading the reviewer mentioned that the manga is worse

I just watched the first 2 eps, and so far: the foot stuff feels way more prominent in the anime, and there was one panel in the manga with an underwear shot (that had a contextual reason - she does a reverse handstand in front of the whole class) that the anime avoided (making the scene make a little less sense, tho it was still coherent)

I can’t focus on 活字 today, so I picked a random manga in my 積読 pile, which was 先輩はおとこのこ 1 | L17
I liked it, although the drawing style really feels lower quality than manga I typically read. Turns out it’s a scroll manga (?) put in book form… back onto my phone screen. I guess it feels pretty expensive for what it is for that reason. Maybe I should try to find the original version instead

I think it’s expensive because it’s printed full colour.

But the original web comic is full color, and I am reading it as an ebook  There’s no printing involved anywhere.

Anyway, I will probably just read the webcomic instead.

I read the first “volume” as a webcomic (I keep meaning to get back to it, but… *gestures vaguely*) and I kinda can’t imagine it as an actual book…

Literally all my on-going series that I haven’t touched in a while.

The paneling felt a bit weird, but I didn’t think about it too much until the あとがき. Knowing it was originally meant to be read as vertical scrolling made so much more sense.
