What are you reading today?

I’m focusing on 真贋事件簿-京都寺町三条のホームズ 2 | L32 . Yesterday I read almost 40 pages  Today I already read about 5 pages and will soon continue

I’ve been reading きたきた捕物帖 | L30?? and enjoying it. It’s an Edo period book set among the townspeople; I guess you’d call it “small local mysteries” genre – “local lad goes missing” level of incident, though the level of seriousness seems to be ramping up a little as the book progresses.

Miyabe Miyuki as usual is a fairly easy read, and this book is comparatively generous with furigana.

There’s a second book in the series, which I’m guessing is “more stories, same characters”.

I’m also most of the way through 陰陽師 付喪神ノ巻 | L35 which is a “book N in a series I know I like” read.

That second one seems fun, and also on my wishlist apparently. Maybe I’ll read it later this month

Good luck! Anime is arguably slightly better but I am enjoying both!

Anyone read this?

I read the preview and a random bit a scanlation earlier, and it seems like a maybe interesting setting & character dynamics. But given my track record with Manga Time KR 4-koma, I’m hesitant to add it to my “plan to buy” list

Here are 21 pages for free: ほぐして、癒衣さん。. Or is that what you meant by the preview?

Yeah that’s what I’ve already read… Amazon preview is the same. My thing with MKR is - with a few exceptions - they’re often good for a few chapters and then kinda fall off for me. So that’s why I’m hesitant.

I read some more of the scanlation tho, and I think I click with this one. So maybe I’ll grab it next month, if I haven’t forgotten it exists by then

It’s also relatively expensive for just 124 pages . Comparing the publication times the next volume might come in 2/2026. On that occasion, there might be a sale.

So for physical, they’re higher quality paper, and larger size than your typical manga. Also 4-koma (particularly the 2 strips per page ones like this) are often more content dense than other manga

Digital yeah it’s on the pricier side for manga. But still not unreasonable for me

I have not read this one. Quick question though. You usually binge read manga, right? If so, have you considered reading these at a slower pace? Maybe they get stale for you because it’s the same thing 13 times within a week, in which case you might enjoy it more read over a month or two.

I see where you’re coming from, but doesn’t work for me. Reading slower has almost never improved my experience of something (reference or how-to books aside). If I have to adjust my reading speed for the content to be interesting, the problem is with the content.

I did try to do it intentionally with まちカドまぞく… but it’s an outlier in that I actively disliked it rather than found it boring

Fair enough

:open_mouth:

I’m surprised since on its surface it’s light yuri stuff. I started rereading volume 2 and I’m liking it a little better than I did the first time around.

In that respect I liked it well enough (maybe I’d enjoy the anime?). But in terms of writing and comedy, it just fell really flat for me. The lookups didn’t really help… but that’s besides the point

Cool! Anything in particular that’s made it more enjoyable this time?

I’ve reread a few chapters of https://learnnatively.com/book/b5d6b825b8/ and am doing it in lessons now (intonation practice), and still enjoying fwiw

I’m finding it a bit funnier and I’m more interested in seeing where the story goes. That said, it’s still super dense and requires a ton of lookups, so we’ll se how far I go. I already bought volume 3 a couple months ago, so I’ll read that at least and go from there.

Caught up with the latest chapters, after months of not reading. Really like the current direction, though Hina, girl, what are you doing?!?!. Maybe minor spoiler: getting to see Taiki and Chinatsu as a couple, while Chinatsu is in college, but Taiki is in high school. And the ship I’ve been hoping for might finally sail soon… well you never know, it might get dragged out another 20 chapters :joy: . My one complaint is sometimes I just really can’t tell who is speaking… しゃあないな〜

I’ve debated in the past whether to log books as read, if I’ve only read the chapter releases & not the actual 単行本. Decided it’s a bit silly not to log them… Only downside is, I have no idea what to rate some of them, since the content is all blurred now. Makes it harder to write reviews too, but I guess I’ll try to keep that in mind when reading now.

My reading activity for today looks pretty silly now… I’ve supposedly finished 15 volumes of manga today - which obviously, I have not :joy: (I actually read about 4-6 worth, I think)

I started reading this book yesterday. I’m only at 12% of the book so far. It describes a real depressing story but with a comedic tone. For instance He calls a vending machine where he can find a lot of dropped coins 宝島. It’s an autobiographical story about a now comedian who became homeless in middle school. It’s not too difficult or too easy which I like because I was getting burned out on my previous book due to difficulty.

I’ve also started reading the konosuba manga because combined with ホームレス中学生 it will give me a bingo  and I have the volumes physically anyway.

Finished カードキャプターさくら 2 | L20 - not the most exciting, but Syaoran’s entry into the story added some nice complexity. It’s so weird seeing the CCS version of him, rather than the Tsubasa version (even tho I’ve already seen the anime). I do enjoy seeing him be so flustered around Yukiko, who definitely has some chemistry with Sakura’s older brother :joy:

I enjoy the “everybody is in love with someone else” thing. I really don’t enjoy the “seemingly middle aged teacher giving an elementary schooler a 婚約指輪” thing - but I knew I was in for that already. I definitely appreciate the way the anime handled it instead.

My main incentive for reading the story (ケロちゃん speaks Osaka-ben) isn’t as big a motivator at this point. But besides the handwriting, they’re easy, and it’s only 12 volumes. So I’ll keep on with them.

凜として弓を引く | L25 - 80% through. Still not the most riveting, but it’s really great as the 弓道 aspect goes. I’m really looking forward to finishing it though, cuz there’s other stuff I wanna get to. It’s been a month since I started reading (focused on other stuff), which is a little too stretched out for me. It does make me consider picking up a non-fiction book about 弓道 someday… Since I’ll probably never do it IRL.

明日もまた勇者のとなり 1 | L26 is holding up well on a reread. Been enough time since I read it that it feels fresh.

I finished きたきた捕物帖 | L30?? (which I enjoyed) and am now thinking about some milestones I’d like to hit by the end of the year:

  • if I read another 175 pages that will be 10,000 this year
  • if I finish one more book that will take my lifetime total to 350
  • if I read another two books that will equal last year’s total of 32

I think those should all be doable, as there’s over a month left.

Current in-progress books:

  • 或る「小倉日記」伝 傑作短編集1 | L30?? – short stories, a fairly difficult read and rsther unevenly interesting. I stalled out months ago on a section where a character was screwing their life up by doing something stupid, which is not a story beat I like reading through.
  • 稲荷書店きつね堂 | L30?? – kitsune kid helping out at a bookshop. Short book I got halfway through; I bought it mostly on the strength of the cover illustration, but I’m not too enthused about the “eager young kid” vibe of the main character.
  • あの子とQ | L30?? – schoolgirl vampire comedy. I’ve read about 50 pages, so just enough for the book to explain its setting, but not enough to see where it’s going next.
  • Or I might start something else from my TBR pile

Well, not exactly today, but I bought and read the 3 available volumes of 私の心はおじさんである | L30. Since it was added as a standalone book and not a series, it’s sadly impossible to add more volumes. I just tried to add the rest from volume 2 as a series hoping it would detect they are connected (the link to the first book on the amazon series page is correctly recognized by Natively as “already on Natively”, so I thought it might work) but 私の心はおじさんである【電子版特典付】2 | L30 only gives me volume 2  I guess we need to wait until admin approval for the other volumes to populate? If so, I guess it will take a while

Edit: it did populate, and now there are two versions of the first volume on the website. What have I done

Edit2: by the way, I always find it funny when publishers try their very best to find a category in which the book was number 1, so that they can slam the big 1 on the cover, with the category itself written in incredibly small font.
Well, this series was apparently number 1 among readers in their forties.

That’s… good? I guess? Considering the main character is in their forties, it does make sense too. (Also the font isn’t that small, now that I am checking; I’m a bit unfair)

Edit3: they are publishing one volume per year, but the online version has 30 volumes worth of content. That doesn’t seem like a reasonable pace. (Or they are planning to cut the story much earlier)

Now that I’m free from Uni’s exam, I finally have enough time to go back into reading novels :sob:

I’m back right where I left at the end of last month, with the last 2 short stories from 仄暗い水の底から

Since I missed out on starting a new book this month, I want to end the year with a bang. While I browse through my Kindle recommendations, I’d love to get some inspiration from you guys. What’s your number 1 book you’ve read so far in 2025? :heart_hands:
