What are you reading today?

I really enjoyed the first four volumes, which I read earlier this year. I’m a bit stalled after that since the next volume is a short story collection, so there’s no continuous story to keep me invested. Eventually I’ll get through that and continue the series.

Do you mean the “after” book? I believe that’s an optional book you can just skip without missing anything important. So you could just continue with volume 5.

Good to know you like the first 4 books, that just strengthens my resolve to push the books

I read the whole series (moving to the web version once I reached the last published volume at the time) and I enjoyed it a lot!
I was kinda sad that it ended, too. Even though the plot was nicely resolved, life goes on, maybe some other plots could happen or something. I haven’t checked, but I really hope the author keeps going once the publication is over.
(Considering they are already making prequel series following some of the characters, I assume that may very well happen)

Ah, also @seanblue, I personally skipped the short stories volume(s? I remember more than one), and nothing of value was lost.

On a completely unrelated note, I started reading https://learnnatively.com/book/ad1d8e9eb7/, my currently oldest in TBR.
It’s too early to say anything about the plot, but I just want to say that the 少佐, after the book established that she is currently on her periods, is wearing this:

Now that is a bold move. Don’t know if the author just didn’t think about it, but it sure is establishing her to be reckless much more surely than the action scene from the previous chapter.

I may do that. The first story was fine, if forgettable, but I lack motivation to read the rest. I’m sure I’d have a much better time with the main volumes.

Good to know… even more reason to skip them.

My understanding is that volume 9 finished the adaption of the web novel and volume 11 is coming out soon, so maybe your wish has been granted.

Uh, I think she already bled through it too?? :joy: Bold indeed.

Volume 9 is the last volume I own, so I just checked and you are right.
The blurb for volume 10 even says it’s completely original content.

Well, that’s great to know! I was not checking since I assumed it would become an offshoot series like 本好き. More stuff I need to catch up to.

I think that’s just the way the shadowing works, but yeah, not the most practical outfit anyway.

Yeah, haha, I figured it was not intentional, but going with a reddish hue for shadow on white pants immediately after specifying she’s on her period… It’s hard not to think it lol

I can’t unsee it. This is now canon

That makes me unreasonably happy. :joy:

Still working on the old lady yuri, and recently learned there’s a different old lady yuri too, but I forgot the name again

Almost 60% through. This has been my favorite of the recent volumes so far. Between the new series, which are all pretty fresh for YH, and the established ones, I’ve loved every chapter so far.

I especially love that it really seems like Hime in わたゆり might actually be aromantic. Like I’m probably getting my hopes up for nothing, given the genre, but I would really love that.

85% through. The range is about what I expected - some solid ones, some low-effort fantasy ones. A few it would be nice to see as longer series. Glad I’m finally reading it, since poly is another “rare in yuri” thing

Been doing a ton of reorganizing over the last month. Friend rec’d get book, so I got the manga instead. So far (25%) it’s just “picture your ideal house and how you want to live (in general)”, and “save throwing stuff out for the end” or something like that.

The story portion is fine so far, and it’s easy to quick read. I don’t really care for the fact that it’s probably gonna be “look, she cleaned her house, now she gets a perfect boyfriend as a prize” thing - but that’s fairly irrelevant. Edit: not because I think there’s anything wrong with “girl gets guy as prize for plot success”, but bc I don’t think it’s great to link cleaning and potentially self-worth to that, and this is basically a how-to/self-help book in a sense. So I care about something like that here, where as in like fiction idgaf, and would actually like more “girl gets guy as prize”, since so much media is “guy gets girl as prize”… which like maybe the answer is just “consume more shoujo” :joy:

So, I just finished 攻殻機動隊 1 | L40?? and boy it was a wild ride. The author explores a lot of random concepts related to engineering, cybernetics, philosophy, religion, ethics… Some of it is fairly dated, compared to current scientific advances (also the USSR still exists in their version of 2030…)

At the same time, the fan service is kinda wild. There are a few color pages in a row of Kusanagi (the main character) recording lesbian porn with a few “friends”, and we get to see everything, so I guess it is literally porn? A note from the author in the margin mentions it’s a secondary source of income for her, but it never comes up again. In a non-dated chapter, Kisanagi goes on a date with one of her “gal pals” from that scene, but she never shows up again. Past that point, Kusanagi has apparently been in a stable relationship with a guy (so she is not lesbian, bi?), but he just shows up for one chapter before getting back to the void. Generally speaking, women are cute and not wearing much while guys are older (or just old) and in full suits/uniforms. Kinda annoying, but on that front, I guess the manga is a product of its time.

I’m also not a fan of the fact that most chapters are independent stories (although there are callbacks), still I liked the setting well enough despite it all. The end is kinda weird though. Not sure where the author is going with that (but I’m not planning to keep reading; even if I do, it won’t be before a while)

Fun fact, the author of the manga I just started is also called Kusanagi (different kanji for “nagi”, but still)

Edit: and I just finished said manga (暁のヨナ 1 | L27) I did enjoy it a lot, even though we are just establishing the characters and their relationship so far. Yet another series I need to remember to read

Finished one last book for this year: 隠し剣秋風抄 (文春文庫 ふ 1-39) | L30?? which brings me up to 35 in total for the year. That’s my highest annual total except for my “read a book a week” year of 2017, so I’m pretty happy with that.

Next on the list I think is likely to be 夜明け前 01 第一部上 | L30?? , a classic historical novel written in the 1930s about the period of the Meiji restoration by an author who’d lived through those times. I suspect it will be a moderately challenging read judging by the pre-study I’ve been doing with the jpdb decks. (It’s on aozora, in four parts: this is part 1 if you want to sample the style.)

It did recently finish publication, so you can binge it! I’m sure you’ll enjoy the series from the character design alone :face_with_tongue:, but the story is also quite good.

They just announced a second season of the anime adaption after a decade, so that’s cool too!

That’s interesting, I’ve actually enjoyed the break from the main story a lot. Maybe because Nero and Rin are interesting characters, or maybe because repetitiveness of the main story started to wear on me around that time.

I ran out of steam with this series half way through book 9, but hopefully properly finishing 9 and 9after one day.

I don’t usually like episodic stories in general (other than comedies), so this is pretty typical for me. I was also taking a break from the series after volume 4 anyway, so in that sense, 4 after didn’t serve so much as a break from the main story as it was an obstacle.

Yes, but not quite… The final chapter of the main story just ended. There’s a 外伝 chapter coming out in February. Vol 47 also comes out in February, and then there will be a final vol 48 with the final two chapters + the 外伝. Release date hasn’t been stated yet: https://twitter.com/KusanagiMizuho/status/2001837262259261521

Gives me a good excuse to finally rewatch S1

True, and @Naphthalene reads fast enough that they could actually catch up before then!

Oh, me too. I have seen it twice, but I can’t even remember when the last time was. Probably over 5 years ago. I may leave this one to English subs though. Trying to only watch without English subs is part of the reason I just don’t watch much anime these days. Sometimes I just need to relax and enjoy.

That’s totally fair. I’ve been reading English webtoons more lately, for similar reasons
