What are you reading today?

Hah… Idk. I see them all now tho

Probably a wiser decision than me wanting to try https://learnnatively.com/book/01ea1dacce/ now

Cool. Sounds kinda interesting

I think I’ve yet to read a shoujo where vol 1 was good, but later volumes weren’t. I hope you have similar luck here.

And with that, I finished volume 12 of 僕の心のヤバイやつ | L21 and I really like the series! I’m actually so happy that the next volume comes out tomorrow.

It’s the first time I come across a series where (spoiler, but honestly I think it’s fine, nay, necessary to check) the couple properly forms in the middle and it keeps going from there. It’s usually “after an insane amount of shenanigans and misunderstandings they finally got together, the end” which is the most annoying since getting together is the just the beginning, there’s a lot to do from there. Some series do start from the couple being formed, but then, that means you miss the “how did they get together” part, which is fun too if not overdone.
On top of that, the main character is not flawless, but he is still an animated walking pile of green flags (who’d have thought, considering the beginning). One of my favorite sequences (now, that is a spoiler) is when she asks why he said sorry about touching her (involuntarily by the way) in a somewhat risqué place, and he replied that just because he is her boyfriend he can’t just touch her without consent. Which lead her to enthusiastically consent, which obviously had an “impact” on him. The delivery was great, the progress for the relationship was great, it’s a great example for the (I assume) target audience that consent is sexy. I literally cried (it was not the only time either). It’s such a contrast with series where the main character is either a nice guy™ or an asshole and somehow get all the girls.

Anyway, rant over. I really hope it remains at this level. My only issue right now is that it really feels like we are getting close to the end…

Reading Shiomi Natsue’s 雨上がり、君が映す空はきっと美しい.

As someone who struggled with self-confidence issues throughout adolescence, I recommend it for anyone wanting some wholesomeness/confidence boosts/faith in humanity.

Given I’ve seen the movie adaptations for this author’s works, I want to continue reading most of them. Highly recommend for anyone N3/N2 level language learning practice.

On a side note, it’s been a hot minute since I’ve last posted here. Will read through posts here and try to be more active as motivation for reading more Japanese this year.

Yes, another convert!!

I absolutely love everything about that series (and I can’t wait to binge the new volume when it comes out in a few days). It does such a good job of capturing the awkwardness of being a young teenager, but also being really heartfelt and believable.

I really hope not…
But the author has already started a spin-off with the sister, so I feel like you’re maybe not wrong..

I bought that on sale last year and keep meaning to get to it.. I listened to the audiobook for 夜が明けたら、いちばんに君に会いにいく| L26 and quite liked it, so I’ve also been meaning to read more.

Maybe that’s my sign to get to reading this finally

I mean, we are getting to the end of junior high. The author seems to skip most of the stuff that doesn’t involve those two (which makes sense) such that we just rushed through a bunch of months in volume 12. Once they go to separate high schools (especially considering that Suwa-san mentioned that they have plan to increase her work then), I really don’t see them meeting all that much (if at all). So there’s just not much content to go with (and realistically they would just fade out and break up, but I do hope the author decides that they somehow managed to stay together).

Technically, that’s a different author (七坂ハイカ) “under the supervision of” the author (the blurb on the back also mentioned she “checked the whole content”). To me that sounds like the publisher was pushing hard to get a spinoff out but the author didn’t really care about it or was too busy. That being said, now that you mention it, it could also be that the publisher wants the series/setting to keep going one way or another since there may be plans to end the main series.

Oh I didn’t realize it was with a different author… Well good I don’t have to read it then

 I thought the exact same.

Well, I just finished volume 13 and the author said in the afterword that next volume is the last, soooo that’s it, I guess.

Edit: the volumes are published on a really tight schedule compared to the online serialization. The next chapter (which will be the first one of volume 14) just got posted and is available for free: 僕の心のヤバイやつ【最新話無料】・Karte.183 僕は戦闘開始 | チャンピオンクロス (Apparently, they remain free to read for 3 weeks)

I can’t say I’m not surprised. But I’m sad.

On the plus side, I won’t have to wait 10 years to read a conclusion, so…

I also didn’t realize today’s the day.. and I just realized that it’s bc I always forget I’m almost a day behind Japan.. welp, I know what I’m gonna read next.

Yesterday, I kept checking the time since 10pm, bought it at exactly midnight, and immediately fell asleep in the like 5s it took to download (so I used my lunch break to read it).

Chapter 183 ends on a cliffhanger. Gah. Well, I guess I just need to hibernate until next Tuesday.

Or, you know, read the “ツイヤバまとめ” books (the author released a bunch of short manga stories on her twitter account over the years and compiled them all and provided them as free ebooks). There are 2 volumes as of now, an they are free… (I mean, with a twitter account, you can just read the same thing there, so it makes sense)

Oh I forgot about those!! I should read them when I get sad once I finish the new volume

サイレント・ウィッチ | L30 is such a good series, y’all. I’m currently reading volume 3 and despite L30 being the hardest level I ever read at, I’m flying through it because it’s so engaging that it takes much longer until I’m exhausted. I’m even getting back to it multiple times a day after I already read a ton earlier! (And it’s better than volume 2 so far, which was better than the already great volume 1. Hell yeah.)

If you don’t know it yet, it’s a pretty neat concept too: The main character is probably one of the strongest magic users currently alive, which would be such a boring LN cliché if it wasn’t completely and utterly balanced out by her absolutely crippling social anxiety and lack of self-worth. Instead of just breezing through everything with magic, we slowly see her grow in everyday (and not-so-everday) situations, and the few times she actually uses magic (or math ) it feels good to have our usually timid Monica be a total badass.

I love the series too!
Monika is such a great character, and the supporting cast is good too . I especially like Isabelle.

I’m currently halfway through the second volume.
For me it’s also really difficult but I intend to just power through it.

You made me pick up volume 6. Sadly, I still remember that part from reading the online version, but I think there’s an original part coming up soon.

I believe starting from volume 10 the content is original (don’t quote me on that one though).

That’s correct, but even before that, the author greatly expended some stuff and added new plot points. I’m pretty sure volume 5 ended in the middle of one of those, so most likely I’ll get to new content if I just get through the prologue.

Ah I didn’t know that. I never read the web novel (or any web novel for that matter), so it’s all new to me!

It avoids the painful wait when you catch up with publication, at the cost of potentially lower quality, less content, etc.
Some web novels have completely different ends compared to the published version too, so it can be fun to compare both!

https://learnnatively.com/book/90b1f9c221/ is a great example. The author changed some events to fix some plot holes and took volumes to get back to the initial story (or may not even manage to do so? I forgot)
