What are you reading today?

If it has furigana or an audiobook I’m fine, but otherwise the mental strain is really limiting the amount I can read in one go (and then my desire to come back to it in the same week)

My plan is: more known kanji → easier to recognize vocab → less (brain) effort → profit

But that’s a long journey

Maybe you could try some manga that don’t have furigana that are still relatively easy to read like

Also I think at some point it’s a lot easier to just learn Kanji along with vocabulary. Like looking up Kanji in a novel you don’t know and then adding the word to your vocabulary list in Kanji (with furigana). I think that’s the best way to learn once you’re at the point where you can read N5+N4+ possibly some N3 Kanji. Because if you know at least kun yomi or on yomi, they’re easier to look up, too, if you come across words you don’t know written with Kanji you do know

Since I last updated I’ve finished the first volume of 本好き plus the fifth volume of 安達としまむら, and I’ve moved on to ビバリウム Adoと私 (Ado’s autobiographical novel!) which I’m over the moon to be reading. I absolutely love Ado, in fact her music was the reason I began learning japanese, so being able to read her novel feels like quite a special milestone in a way.

What Kroki said really motivated me :sob::laughing: so I finished 青ブタ vol 14 yesterday and started reading the final volume today

I finished reading these two between yesterday and today.

I realized I don’t have physical of 魔法少女にあこがれて 1-11, and with the new kindle DRM, I’d love to have that physical just in case, so that was a big amazon order that should come eventually home…

Don’t encourage them! :grimacing:

I tried to order from somewhere else but it was so much expensive :smiling_face_with_tear:

At least Natively should get a cut, if they tracked the order properly, which I found out they often do not.

Congrats on reaching the final volume! You’re zooming through the series, I’m honestly impressed as well

41% in, and Ruri Dragon 5 is excellent so far! During earlier volumes one half was often stronger than the other one (at least in my opinion), so maybe I’m celebrating a bit too earlier, but this might be my favourite volume yet.

Ohhh vol 5 is out! That explains why book 4 was so far behind… Kinokuniya didn’t have 5 when I went, for some reason. I used to follow each chapter, but I’ve stopped keeping up with anything that isn’t Yurihime at this point. At some point I’ll randomly catch up with that & アオのハコ | L23 though

Has anyone here finished 青ブタ? I finished reading vol 15 yesterday and I’m curious what people think about it but not sure yet if I want to write a review or not. To be honest I thought it was pretty disappointing. The previous volume was quiet emotional and set up so many things and volume 15 made you think there’s gonna be like some emotional twists before the conclusion of the story but well… That just wasn’t the case

Anyway reading some 遊戯王 now since I want to play a VN soon

I gave up around volume 4 or 5, because it already felt disappointing at the time, so I can’t say I’m surprised :joy:

I am aware that I am not in the target audience.

I wanted to read ahead of the anime, but ended up starting the manga from the beginning:

In the anime, I feel like what was supposed to be romantic is an annoying nuisance at best, but in the manga I can see MC slowly becoming more… aware with time.
By the end of vol 4 it became believable to me. Disclaimer: maybe anime had that too and I’m just blind.

Also, I’m in the middle of this audiobook:

Content warnings lmao (edited)

EDIT after it was pointed out that I failed at explaining the roles here

The couple is married for 8 years now and they’ve never met face to face. She sends him a letter for the first time ever asking for a divorce, but he gets a bit offended (even though he doesn’t care about this marriage either), proceeds to learn and believe bad rumors about her, comes to her bedroom in the middle of the night and proposes a bet.

The blurb should really mention “bet” is “he will allow them to divorce if, after a month of trying, she doesn’t get pregnant. Otherwise they’ll be married forever”.

I feel like many of us would go “ewww what” and for some of us this might be a hard no-no.

So she doesn’t want it and he doesn’t want it either. Worse than that, in his POV he’s also assuming she’s sleeping around in general and with his father in particular, and that doesn’t stop him from going ahead with it, ewww (also, she isn’t!!). While her thoughts of “well, it’s not like getting pregnant is easy, other ladies complain about it, so maybe a month will not be enough” made me choke and Google birth control spoiler there and then

Why we start like this is not clear - the story is fully in the scheming/territory management and snarky banter between her and his father.
It’s probably there to serve as an excuse for sexy times in the future… Who knows, maybe the second half of the book will be spent in sex dungeons after all?

Anyhow, the audiobook is amazing. It’s narrated by a guy, and he’s speedrunning worldbuilding/narration so fast, I literally can’t multitask while listening. This will be a real 5/5 for learning. I’d give it 6 now that I saw a Japanese comment on Audible complaining that it was too fast for audiobook.
As for now, most of it is snarky banter (between MC and her father-in-law), the high tempo and the voices he makes make it absolutely hilarious.

Really? I don’t know the context, but that doesn’t sound bad to me? Like, he is not forced to do it (I assume). If for whatever reason he needs the marriage to hold but doesn’t want to, then, yeah, that sounds bad, but otherwise, I don’t really see an issue?

That’s one of the wilder sets of warnings I’ve read on here :joy:

ソードアート・オンライン | L33 and ソードアート・オンライン プログレッシブ | L34 are basically the same speed as this (maybe a little faster, based on the short part I listened to). Interesting to know there’s natives (I assume) who also find it challenging to keep up

転生した三毛猫は王子と玉座の夢を見る 1 | L24?? randomly popped on my booklive recommendation list a few weeks ago, so I grabbed it since it looked cute but then kinda just forgot about it. Until today! It was much more interesting than I originally expected. I’m curious to see where the author is planning to go with this, but the publication seems to be kinda slow, sadly. I’m guessing 6 months per volume?
So the next one should come around autumn probably.

I don’t quite care about his feelings in those 10 horrible minutes tbh (before the plot moved on away from this)

She asked for a divorce, and he came up with this bet just to be cruel to her. He also doesn’t want this marriage and kids or whatever. She can’t get a divorce without his approval, so she agrees to get at least some chance to be free.
…am I just too gentle that I feel like the concept of forced pregnancy deserves a warning? :grimacing:
If he fails, it’s just fun sexy times, yay, if he succeeds, he’ll ruin the free life of a merchant she wants to have, and I’ll be sad

I think both @Naphthalene and me misunderstood what you wrote earlier as “She really wants a kid, and if he doesn’t manage to do that she’s threatening to divorce him”. (And yeah, the actual plot point is pretty eww.)

Oh oopps, my bad
That’d be a very different plot

Upd: edited that post for poor souls that might read my og message later :woman_bowing:

Yes, I understood what @Legato just said. That’s indeed a very different plot…
I’m not sure I understand his point of view as you explain it  But yes, that’s very weird (and also ewww)
