What are you watching today?

Rewatching, along with the gag outtakes. My listening (word recognition specifically) has definitely improved a lot since September! Tho still some lookups, and places where I checked the EN subs for a word or two (and then deduced what the JP word was). The line that gave me the most trouble so far starts w/ 川を since it sounded like かわお, and I was like “I’ve never heard a word like かわお” :joy: . I’ve also been speaking along to the intro - which is faster than I talk, but I’ll manage it eventually! The score is sooooo well executed, though I’m not crazy about how they adapted Book 1 (Book 2 黄薔薇革命 was fine). Curious to see how I’ll feel about the rest.

Edit: I just watched the live action, and while it was enjoyable enough, I was really dissatisfied as an adaptation. The anime version is much, much better.

Gotta Catch 'Em All ポケモン ゲット! Fun, simple nostalgia trip - tho I remember a lot more of it than I was expecting (I last watched like 6 years ago?). Otoh the OG names are different enough than the English versions I know that it’s kind of novel.

Finished w/ EN subs, cuz that’s the only way I could find it (and the audio quality is rough, though not the worst I’ve come across). It was definitely moving, and I felt bad for the girls involved. Vocab-wise, mid-upper L20s. Next I’ll check out 花つみ日記 | L30?? which is based off of 吉屋信子’s 天国と舞妓 in 小さき花々 花物語 | L39 (which I’m about to read)

I definitely never had any interest in this before but hearing about you all talk about it for the past 4 months I’ve gotta say, your propaganda has done a number on me :joy:

Too bad it’s only on HiDive bc I don’t need another streaming service…although I wonder if it’s been long enough that they’ve reset my free trial…

Hmm, I think I watched it on Crunchyroll back in the day, but I’m not sure… I’m glad the propaganda enthusiasm has piqued your interest  If you do watch it, I found the beginning pretty rough, but by the halfway point, it picked up a lot more

Just sign up for the trial w/ a different email

I thought I would treat myself to an easy listen after Pretear, so I started ふらいんぐうぃっち | L19 and it was easy… but also, I thought it was pretty boring. :no_mouth: I like witches, I like cute girls doing cute things, but this one just didn’t click with me for some reason.

Started 安達としまむら S1 | L24 which I am liking a lot less than anticipated. I don’t care what the white-haired 宇宙人 girl is supposed to represent, there’s no mood-killer quite like an anime child.

And also started 先輩はおとこのこ S1 | L20 which I am liking a lot more than anticipated.

I wouldn’t really call Flying Witch cgdct personally. I enjoyed it the first time I watched it, but didn’t get very far in the 2nd time. It’s rare that I’m in the mood for iyashikei tho.

Is she supposed to represent something? She is like 90% of what I hated about the anime adaptation, since she just functions as a disruption to an already fairly lagged/arrested relationship. I liked what I read of the manga adaptation back when I read it, but after I caught up (vol 5) I never ended picking it back up again, and get the feeling I wouldn’t be in the mood for it. I think in both the original and the manga adaptation, space girl doesn’t show up till way later (well she wasn’t in the manga adaptation at all at that point)

I finally caught this! On Amazon it’s split into 3 episodes. It’s basically just some highlights from the manga animated… which was ok, but it’s really a series that would be great to see a proper adaptation for.

I discovered 樫風 (mangaka of ロンリーガールに逆らえない | L22 and キミが吠えるための歌を、 1 | L24??) has a v-tube channel where she hangs w/ other yuri mangaka (authors of 君と綴るうたかた and きたかわ), streams games, etc. So I watched a 恋バナラジオ vid with the 3 of them, and plan to watch more of her stuff

Another yuri v-tuber. It seems like a lot of her content is probly ecchi, but I was listening to her 【[#ガチ百合]】本当にあったリアル百合エピソード playlist, where she reads letters from fans, recounting actual irl yuri experiences. Also her chat with 樫風 先生 (she has vids w/ the other two mangaka as well)

I was assuming she represented something or i dont know why she’s there, other than to annoy me.

I’ve been watching through the Madoka franchise of late, so I’ve rewatched the original anime, the Rebellion movie, Magia Record S1, and am partway through Magia Record S2. I needed a rewatch before Walpurgisnacht Rising so doing it in Japanese is killing two birds with one stone. Maybe I’ll get to some of the spinoff manga too…

Once there’s a confirmed release date for the new movie I will also rewatch the original series and movie. I do plan to read 魔法少女まどか☆マギカ[魔獣編] | L24?? in between them as well since I already bought all the volumes but haven’t read them yet.

I do hope the new movie has a release in some theaters near me though. I don’t watch movies in theaters much in general, let alone anime, but I will go see this.

I’ve read Homura Tamura and Different Story in English, but other than that I haven’t read any of Oriko Magica, Kazumi Magica, Wraith Arc etc. I don’t really expect them to rely on any of the spinoffs for the walpurgisnacht rising movie (and could even see them contradicting them), but it would be nice to catch any references.

I don’t plan to read all the spinoffs, but the one I plan to read may be relevant only because it’s technically the world that exists after the end of the series. Obviously things may have changed again after Rebellion (we don’t know yet), but it could still be relevant.

Started ロマンティック・キラー S1 | L25 today and I’m really enjoying it so far! Makes me want to pick up an otome game myself, haha. This definitely feels harder than L25 so far, though; thank goodness for subs.

I watched that with my partner (so English subs) when it came out and I remember thinking that I didn’t think I could do it in Japanese and was surprised when it landed just at L25. This was before L25 with Japanese subs was even approachable for me though so I dunno how I’d feel about it now. :joy:

Just curious, if you compare it to other shows it’s been graded against, does it seem accurate/consistent?

I tried watching it a while back, but it didn’t really grab me when I tried it.

I should do that eventually (like I need another thing to watch)… I watched it before I was learning Japanese, but have really forgotten a lot of it. Wonder what I’d think now

Just took a quick glance and I haven’t seen any of the shows it’s being rated against (except for like, はじめてのおつかい S1 | L22) , so I can’t say.

Honestly I’m almost tempted to stop looking at Natively ratings for TV shows for now; I think the skills I’m lacking in (having that audio link for vocab and grammar I already know) are not the skills being graded against for these shows (actual range of vocab/grammar), so the level doesn’t help anyway.

I don’t notice a huge difference in what gets graded L22-L26 anymore. I sometimes have trouble in L22 shows, I sometimes can just watch a L25 show without subs. Which I guess is to say that I either agree and/or should be watching more orange shows :joy::joy::sweat_smile:

I usually look at the level rating as more of a hint how difficult something will be. When I first started using natively, I found the lower level stuff to be really skewed toward how much of the story was told in pictures over actually rating the vocab/grammar.

Although the more shows I watch, the less I notice the difference between a level 20 show and a level 26 show…

I’m really starting to wonder how the older 70s version of Anne of Green Gables compares to アン・シャーリー S1 | L25. This week’s episode felt especially like they were speeding through a lot of stuff that needed a little more time to breath. Although, (spoilers for episode 4) Diana showing up to Anne’s house, immediately downing three glasses of wine and then turning around and leaving within in five minutes is extremely funny.

Although since it’s four episodes in, that means people can grade it and it’s currently coming at about L25 which feels about right.

To be fair, that’s what I remember happening in the book too :rofl:Diana, such a (inadvertent) lush

I have the book on my to-read list, but I think I need to work up to it. Maybe after that, I’ll track down where to watch the old Anne of Green Gables anime. Then I can compare all three versions of Diana the (inadvertent) lush
