What are you watching today?

Skip Beat! S1 | L28?? is going really well so far; I just finished up episode 12, which is unheard of for me in this amount of time. As far I can remember from back when I read the manga, this seems to be a pretty faithful adaption.

Watched/rewatched on YouTube (I hadn’t seen Acts 1-2). The final version has a theatrical release next month (and eventually a YouTube release, I think?)…

Starting from Act 3, they seem to have swapped Sana’s actress (originally 渡邉 結衣 who played ひまり in the ささ恋 stage adaptation) to (I’m pretty sure, but someone correct me if I’m wrong) 森 七菜 (who played the MC in 舞妓さんちのまかないさん S1 | L30)… but she’s not credited anywhere. Not sure what’s up with that. So random for this change to happen with probly the only live actors I’d even recognize. I haven’t the read the manga yet

Coincidentally, 森七菜 is also playing the lead in ひらやすみ | L23 - which is coming out soon

I saw this week’s (well, last week’s) episode of 悪食令嬢と狂血公爵 ~その魔物、私が美味しくいただきます!~ S1 | L30??. I actually liked the voice acting of most of the characters introduced this week (except the parents of the main character) but boy did basically nothing happen.
I was a bit stressed about it since Natively says there are only 5 episodes (we’re never going to get past volume 1 at this pace!) but online info says 12 episodes (which is a much more “normal” number). I still feel it’s a bit slow, but we can cover all published volumes in that number of episodes. Most likely just 1 and 2, though.

This is normal behaviour for TMDB. Often their volunteers add just one episode per week, though. So having three ones in advance, you can count yourself lucky  It does not mean that there will only be five episodes.

It was 5 from the start, actually (before the first episode actually aired). I don’t know where that number comes from.

I think the person who added the series didn’t know how many episodes the series will have, so just put in some episode stubs. They might have thought five to be a good number, where nobody thinks it will be the final number, could have been four or just one as well, I suppose.

Turns out the episodes are 15 minutes each - which works a lot better than I’d expect! Also it is set in 岸和田市 (Kishiwada) - so 大阪府 rather than 大阪市. The show goes from like the early 1920s to about 2006 or so. Also it’s fully subbed, at least on Prime Video where I watched it.

I wrote a short review that doesn’t really do it justice… But this is officially my favorite Japanese show (including anime), and I’d recommend it to basically anyone - tho with a CW for domestic violence. While the depiction isn’t particularly extreme, there’s a solid amount early on (and still a little bit later on).

I don’t have any interest in fashion, so it never would have occurred to me to pick something like this up, if it weren’t for the dialect. I’m really glad I did!! I will likely rewatch it in the near future, for language purposes.

Just finished episode 20 of 25 of Skip Beat! S1 | L28?? and uuuuggggh, I don’t want it to end and I wish my listening comprehension was up to scratch. It’s weird though, this episode suddenly has new opening/ending themes. Why the heck would you do that with only five episodes left?

I did find out that the Skip Beat PS2 game apparently follows after the anime. :eyes: Hah, I knew it’d be worth it to buy it!!

And I’m back to trying the gauntlet that is 新機動戦記ガンダムW S1 | L30. The last time I started it was March of last year, and I have a good at least 300 listening hours on top of that, but it’s still so hard.

I’m at least following some of the mech suit fight cockpit jargon (thanks to my jpdb pre-study this time), but what I’m really looking to see is if I can follow the political machinations at all this time. I don’t actually care that much about them (I am here for the big robots and the theme song :joy:), but that’s probably the part that I have the biggest chance of understanding this time through.

I finished https://learnnatively.com/season/e856a3897c/ - I don’t regret watching it, and sometimes I had a good amount of fun, but overall it was pretty underwhelming, and the final episode was mehhhhh

Anyway, since that would have left me at zero 関西弁 shows, I started

I prefer the audiobook + manga better, but this one might be interesting enough.

28 min into this, and enjoying so far. Basically everybody besides the male lead speaks Kansai-ben. Not expecting anything amazing out of it, but who knows

Wow, what a terrible synopsis for that one.

Haha, yeah kinda. Manga synopsis セトウツミ 1 | L23 is a bit better

Still not amazing

Agreed - a basic synopsis for a basic manga. It at least tells me what to expect that.

Tbh the manga itself is just ok, it’s the 漫才/ツッコミ style and general Osaka culture/atmosphere that makes it work. 陰キャギャルでもイキがりたい! | L30 is a much better example of what the genre has to offer. Ironically, it also has a pretty uninspiring synopsis tho

I’m late, probably, but a new anime season started. Not terrifically excited about anything this season. Currently watching:

SANDA S1 | L30?? I’m not a huge Paru Itagaki fan, but it’s Science Saru so I’m obligated to watch. Not sure I’m going to stick with this one. It’s very weird, and I’m not sure it’s in a way I enjoy. Buff Santa sure is a thing though. But speaking of Science Saru, I think I need to stop telling myself that ダンダダン | L28 is too hard and just watch it.

太陽よりも眩しい星 S1 | L30?? Just a cute shoujo romcom about a tall girl and her childhood crush. It’s cute and the language isn’t anything too wild so this is likely my easy watch for the season.

キミと越えて恋になる S1 | L25?? I was basically sold on this one when the blue furred beast guy started wagging his tail when he was happy and then the main girl was like “oh no he’s hot” when she saw his abs. He’s big and tall and ripped and she’s INTO it. It’s shoujo, so I have hopes that maybe it will be media that understands why some folks are into non-human characters. :joy:

Continuing…

CITY THE ANIMATION S1 | L29 Finishing up CITY. I just kept forgetting to watch the new episodes since it was on Amazon exclusively. Nice visual humor, beautiful animation (of course, it’s KyoAni), but a lot of the spoken humor is still over my head. :joy:

パンティ&ストッキングwithガーターベルト S1 | L32 I wanted to watch the new Panty & Stocking season, but I’ve still never seen the old one. It’s been an experience.

Yes!プリキュア5 S1 | L24 Still working my way through Pretty Cure, just not getting through this season very fast because 1) it’s long and 2) I’ve been really busy. It’s cute, I like that they’re shaking up the formula a little. I still don’t know why they decided to make the little mascot characters transform into hot guys.

美少女戦士セーラームーン | L23 I started this on a whim because I needed something to listen to while I was folding laundry.

Oh! Episode 1 is available on TVer for a few more days. I’ll have a look and confirm whether she is right or not

Edit: I started watching. I was about to say the animation is pretty nice… but sadly got to an overhead view of the character walking, with the speed of her feet not matching the speed of the street under them (so it looks like she is sliding forward; reverse moonwalk?).
I’m still liking it a lot so far.

Tsunagu-kun takes off his shirt

I’m still liking it a lot so far.

Hmm, not super happy about the end of the episode, but I’m invested now :joy:

Oh thanks for the reminder! I saw this manga a bit back and it looked interesting but I never got around to reading it.

That’s kind of how I felt too :joy: I think how the twist at the end of the episode resolves will determine how invested I feel in the show tbh.

The style is really nice though. And I’m ok with nice stills and kinda off animation

Pretty decent comedic drama from the 1980s, about a very strong-willed elementary schooler, who’s stuck running the family restaurant, because her father is a good for nothing “tough guy” gambler, and her mother left home. There’s a lot of violence in it, but usually very cartoon-y. Also animals are sentient, walk on 2 legs, and talk - but humans can’t understand them. Kansai-ben is excellent.

It’s apparently originally a 67 volume manga series, and also has an anime movie & games! So I guess I’m gonna have a lot to go through. I’m really curious about the games tbh.

A group of foreigners who grew up in Kansai region. It’s cool b/c they’re all from different cities, so have slightly different sub-dialects.

Unfortunately, it fell very flat. Don’t recommend, except for kansai-ben purposes, and even then I think the audio-book is better

This also turned out kinda meh… First half was good, but it got progressively worse as it went on

Was kind of touching, but incredibly unrealistic - particularly with the 20 year old who was portrayed like a fantasized, ideal housewife in her 40s . The story itself was touching though, so 堪忍した
