I always check the list on myanimelist, but there’s stuff like this too:
Oh, I had the wrong kanji in my search.
A good anime adaption could be as good as or better than the manga, but these things are so hit or miss. Also, it’s the kind of show that won’t fully adapt the manga in all likelihood.
Madoka Magica isn’t nearly popular enough (read: shounen) to guarantee that. It’s possible, but far from guaranteed. Thankfully there are a few theaters near me that tend to get the more obscure anime, even if only a few showings, so even if it’s just a limited run I should be able to catch it.
Hmm I see your point
Oh wow I didn’t realize it’s 11 volumes!
Hmmm, honestly I’m surprised if that’s the case for Madoka - but you’d probably know better than I would
I’m sure it’ll get some showings, but not necessarily right when it comes out in Japan and not necessarily widely released. Guess we’ll find out soon enough…
I watched the first episode of はたらく細胞 today, with JP subs. It was pretty difficult (being the first thing I’ve watched at N2 level - everything I’ve watched previously has been rated N3) but the difficulty was mostly due to the biological words I hadn’t heard of before. In any case it was very exciting and I learned a lot from watching it, both about Japanese and biology. Win-win scenario, that.
I forgot about すずめの戸締まり whoops - the second thing I’ve watched at N2 level then ![]()
I’m watching season 2 of Oshi no Ko. Overall I think it’s good. But it’s doing the thing where the main event (the performance in this case) is interrupted by a lot of inner monologuing and cutaways, and it’s so annoying. Chihayafuru season 2 does this a lot too during its matches, which is why that’s my least favorite season. Like, the performance is a really cool spectacle, just let me watch the thing.
花ざかりの君たちへ | L30?? - ep 1-2: I’m loving this every bit as much as I thought I would! Not claiming it’s great literature or anything, just fun. I need more media with women crossdressing as men plz!
違国日記 | L30?? - really fascinating first episode. The way it moves in and out of daydreaming vs reality, and the two leads are great! Bonus: Sawashiro Miyuki plays the older lead, and it’s a totally different style/character type than I’ve heard her act before;
綺麗にしてもらえますか。 S1 | L30?? - “what if iyashikei, but laundry?” I guess? I didn’t make it through ep 1. I’m sure somebody will find it interesting, but not for me
Jotting down a quick list of new seasonals I’d like to check out, with release dates:
- 死亡遊戯で飯を食う。 S1 | L30?? (Jan 7)
- 異世界の沙汰は社畜次第 S1 | L30?? (Jan 6)
- エリスの聖杯 S1 | L30?? (Jan 8)
- 透明男と人間女~そのうち夫婦になるふたり~ S1 | L30?? (Jan 8)
- シャンピニオンの魔女 S1 | L30?? (Jan 9)
- 穏やか貴族の休暇のすすめ。 S1 | L30?? (Jan 8)
I’m really only expecting 穏やかな貴族 to stick, maybe 異世界社畜 as well, but I kind like just sampling shows.
I finished Oshi no Ko season 2. It was good, about the same quality as season 1 I’d say. My only complaint is that it’s always been silly that Aqua and Ruby haven’t already shared who they were in their previous lives since they knew each was abnormal since they were babies. And the fact that it wasn’t cleared up in the last two episodes is also frustrating. I’m sure it’ll be cleared up eventually, but right now it’s a bit annoying.
I haven’t decided whether to watch season 3 as it airs or not. In the past a schedule has helped me keep up with a show. But more recently, I’ve tended to fall behind pretty quickly. On the other hand, watching season 2 in batches of 7, 3, and 3 episodes made it much easier.
General question: Anyone know an easy way to identify current season stuff on Prime Video JP or Netflix JP? I had to search for everything manually rn, and it was kind of annoying…
Doesn’t help that half the stuff that’s started doesn’t actually show up on streaming for another week or two. I temporarily have Crunchyroll for like a month or so, so I’ll either use it or
those I guess
Maybe you can use the provider tags for Japan; as soon as some provider has them. I am not sure, though, how fast these tags get updated.
It’s a good idea, but unfortunately JustWatch usually does not have very up-to-date or thorough info in the first place. Sometimes it has some providers, but often enough it just has nothing
Alrighty, I finally had some time today to sit down and watch some TV. Thoughts on what I watched:
- 透明男と人間女~そのうち夫婦になるふたり~ S1 | L30?? - This seems like a really cute show. First episode was a laid-back introduction to our cast, who all work at a detective agency owned by the titular 透明男, and how he and one of his employees, a blind girl, like each other and are starting to go out. The world is full of non-humans like beast people, oni, aliens, etc., so he doesn’t stand out as being unusual. Language was very easy, so I’ll probably try to continue with this show regardless of content for the at-level listening practice.
- 死亡遊戯で飯を食う。 S1 | L30?? - Wow, this was way longer than I anticipated, at almost 48 minutes long for the first episode. This appears to be set in a world where death games are something you can willingly enter, and this is our protagonist’s 28th game. I thought this first episode was interesting; the music was quite nice, the visuals pleasing to look at. I did need to turn on subs partway through; the language wasn’t terribly difficult, but things/the situation is just vague enough I feel like I need to re-watch this first episode in English if I continue on with the series, just to make sure I caught everything.
Well, I was hoping to watch a third episode as well, but 死亡遊戯 took far longer than thought. Hopefully I can watch a few more episodes of the other new shows this weekend!
Pretty dark first episode. Definitely looking forward to seeing where this one goes, even aside from yuri elements
っげ, I forgot it’s an isekai… that was a lot of “We have to explain the world” in one episode… but besides that, I’m probably liking it already. I had subs for a bit, but the alignment just kept getting more and more off. Maybe I should just wait till it’s on Prime, and hope it gets subs
Watched the first 3 eps, and I’m really impressed by the dub. Like it’s not the quite as good as the english, but 違和感がない, and it fits quite well. They kept the vibe probly as close as you can with this sorta thing. Makes me nostalgic to watch the original!
It’s ok so far, which is also how I feel about the few eps of the later anime I saw. I like this one a bit more, b/c it isn’t going for realism. Like it’s a cartoon, it knows it’s a cartoon, and that’s that. Idk… sometimes it feels like modern/recent anime take themselves a bit too seriously, in a way that a lot of 90s/00s stuff didn’t
Started this when I was sick… It’s interesting, but hard. Definitely need subs for it. Apparently it’s 5 seasons… so this will be a very gradual watch! There’s also a live action, but I had a feeling I’d like the anime version better… I mean I like anime better in the first place
I watched the first 5 episodes of メダリスト S1 | L24 and it’s really good. I don’t usually watch sports anime, but this one is a lot of fun. It’s also such a nice change of pace from Oshi no Ko. I can actually understand everything in this anime other than the technical skating terms, unlike Oshi no Ko where I have to pause all the time. ![]()
I usually don’t watch seasonal anime but I am making an attempt this time.
In order on how much I liked first episde:
死亡遊戯で飯を食う: really love the presentation of it. I like death games so it’s a really fun concept. The mc seems interesting too. I think every 1-2 eps are gonna be 1 death game.
違国日記: another very strong episode. I love Sawashiro Miyuki’s performance as always. The character and situation are hitting rather close home to me.
「お前ごときが魔王に勝てると思うな」と勇者パーティを追放されたので、王都で気ままに暮らしたい: I was looking forward to this series for a long while but first episode was extremely generic. It hit like every web novel trope straight on. I will continue watching it because it’s a female mc and yuri. But I hope it creates it’s own identity beyond these generic tropes.
エリスの聖杯: this episode was fine, but it was just the premise of the series. It didn’t particularly impress me but it has room to improve. I can’t find jp subs for the series though which makes me less likely to continue it. If the 2nd ep doesn’t hook me I’ll probably stop watching.
Started 穏やか貴族の休暇のすすめ。 S1 | L30?? and I’m really enjoying it so far; I was a little worried I’d be too used to the audiobook narrator’s voice, but I do like the anime voices so far. I’m doing intensive listening with this episode, however, so it’s taking me forever to get through it. ![]()
Also, the subs I’m using from [shincaps] stopped working about 14 minutes into the episode (using jimaku player).
I do not know enough about sub files to really diagnose, sadly; I can see the correct text in the file itself…
Okay, the subs started working again partway through for some reason. Not sure what the issue was.
And finished the first episode of 穏やか貴族の休暇のすすめ。 S1 | L30??. I’ll definitely be watching more, as I already enjoy the source material. My biggest complaint so far is that the animation could use some work. Lots of very stiffly-standing people with slightly odd faces, occasional times where people are standing in a room way too big for them. It’s not a dealbreaker, but I hope quality doesn’t get any worse if it doesn’t improve.
This was the first episode I’ve tried an intensive listening strategy to, and while I’m quite happy with my final level of comprehension for it, it took me approximately 64 minutes to finish what, 20 minutes of episode?
I definitely would like to continue doing there where I can, though; I’m used to a much more in-depth style of learning, intensive reading being my bread and butter, and I feel like I’ve got a lot of holes in my listening that can be pretty easily shored up by this method.
Although, how do I count the shows I watch this way on Natively? Subs or no subs? I’m technically watching the entire episode without subs (replaying and rewatching anything I had to use subs for), but I wouldn’t be comprehending what I did without them… Maybe I’ll make a tag for it so I can sort them out later if need be.
This is the one on my “I’m not sure I’m interested, but somehow feel like I’m supposed to try it” list ![]()
Cool to know I’m not her only fan here!
Interesting. I’m not familiar with web novels, so I didn’t notice that, and it felt fairly interesting to me. What are some of the tropes?
I think similar… It was kinda interesting but “ehhh, idk if I really buy this”. The end made the premise seems interesting. Kinda depends if/how the MC develops. Also I like the use of blue shade for the MC’s emotions
Also I think 転生王女と天才令嬢の魔法革命 S1 | L30 is still the only “false accusation” scene I’ve really found convincing. They did a great job with that
What does this mean? Like how would a room be too big?
They’re pulled from TV broadcast
I’d count it as no subs. Well more specifically I’d watch enough episodes to open grading with subs, grade it a bit, and then switch to no subs and grade it like that - since you should have a sense of both by that point
