"What should I read next?" Megathread

I’ve been in the middle of the same four books for months now and need some peer pressure to pick one to focus on and finish! :face_holding_back_tears: I’m feeling like I can’t move on to anything else until I finally reduce my in progress reads. Help!! :scream:

The books:

Which one should I finish first?

  • パパイヤ・ママイヤ - literary teen summertime coming of age story
  • ざっくり分かるファイナンス - let’s learn about finance
  • 銀河鉄道の父 - very long historical novel about the life of 宮沢賢治
  • 脱落論 - essays and criticism about post war Japan and culture from 坂口安吾

Thank you! :pray:t2:

(I picked the one with the lowest page count, on the “start with an easy win” theory.)

tbh honest with a cover like that it looks like some kind of smut romance :joy:

It does. (Considering I like the Ango character from BSD, I’m not exactly complaining tho lol) (I also own this version of the collection)

You come expecting smut romance, you end up getting some real deep takes on the artificial nature of beauty in Japanese gardens and Buddhist art

I’ve been reading a lot of digital manga lately but want to pick a physical one to read next. Going to continue with a series I already started.

That’s a tough one… went with 青のフラッグ simply bc you’re closer to finishing the series, and getting that dopamine rush/sense of accomplishment. At least that’s what I tend to do

Solid decision-making scheme, but I tend to just pick whatever I’m in the mood for without regard to progress. Which is why I have way too many series in flight.

Oh yeah, I do too… but if you put it to a poll like this, that would definitely really influence my vote

Like I just binge read all 26 vols of 赤髪の白雪姫 | L26 in a week and a half, even though I probly could have finished both ツバサ | L25 and 真月譚 月姫 | L30 or 葬送のフリーレン | L26 in the same time… and I’m gonna read it again when the physicals get here

Fair enough. And I put up the poll to begin with because I can’t decide and am fine reading either.

That’s… a lot! I couldn’t find enough time in a week and a half to read 26 volumes of anything. Not that I want to (I usually prefer to spread out a series to savor it).

By the way, you’ve already read more manga than I have, and I started reading in 2017!

I read a lot during work  I sacrificed a lot of sleep, and spent almost all my non-work time reading.

I stall easily… so btwn that & getting over-excited, I tend to binge more often than not. I’m definitely gonna go through 白雪姫 slower this time, so I can get some sleep absorb the language better.

Do you find you remember things pretty well over time? I feel like I forget things pretty quickly, and do wonder whether that has any relation to reading in a short span

Nothing better to do w/ my time lol (really tho, I spend 75-90% of my non-work time reading, any given week). Also you’ve read more & harder LNs than I have - so if you take that into account, you’re still in the lead :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway, cool to know

Omg I can sooo relate, binge watched the anime back then! Such a cute and funny story :heart_eyes_cat:

Not particularly well I’d say. I find myself looking up the same things over and over, probably in part because I don’t dedicate any time to studying or reviewing the words and grammar I encounter when reading. But my memory in general is terrible, so I’m probably not the best reference on this.

I already read the first volume of Crystal hunters, so now I don’t know if I should move on to volume 2, or first reread volume 1 but the natural Japanese version this time. Or should I just switch to only reading the natural version instead? I’m not sure of the increase in difficulty between the two, and I’m an obsolute beginner after all.

  • Volume 1 Natural Japanese
  • Volume 2 Japanese

Hmmm. Not knowing the difference myself, I’d say go for the natural Japanese version to see how different it is.

Definitely give the natural JP version a go. I actually found it a lot easier to understand than the simplified one, back when I read it.

Ahhh I actually meant wrt story, not language. My memory is also kinda iffy (not sleeping enough doesn’t help)

wrt language: I don’t usually do reinforcement, but every once in a while I do*. One thing I think makes a difference is how I look up a word… Hover/OCR lookup is faster, but typing it out (and saying aloud) aids retention, I think.

*Doing Shirayuki jpdb deck rn (when I remember it exists), since it’s very clear which words I had to keep looking up, and I wanna free up the cognitive load for comprehension this time around.

Ah, well my memory for that still isn’t great. I usually remember the most important high level plot points, but forget many details. If I go months between volumes I’ll often reread or at least skim the last chapter I read as a refresher.

Which one should I start?

I always thought the blurb was very interesting.

I really liked the first book.

The protagonist is reborn as Amy from Little Women. I like the Little Women anime and I think the idea of a Little Women isekai/tensei story is kind of funny. Even if just as a gag.

With all the CGDCT and Yuri I read, I sometimes think of reading more male focused stuff. But I tend to dislike how female authors write male love interests. So this one is on the list for having both shounen and BL tags.

This one also has shounen and BL tags. And its short. And it has a hetero tag? And the author also wrote うちの息子はたぶんゲイ which I read a little bit of and thought it was cute.

I did like that series, so I’m recommending it, even though the end felt abrupt and frustrating. I’d love to hear more people’s thoughts on it though.
