I think it’s all a matter of attention span in the end. Sometimes I get pulled into a book so I’ll keep reading the same thing for hours on end, and other times I’ll read from 3-4 books in an hour

I usually have 3-4 in active rotation (text based) and 1-2 audiobooks and then 2-3 books that can be picked up and dropped and so I casually work through them over the course of months (or years in the case of my book of essays on ghosts).

That’s just for Japanese. In English I typically read one to finish and then grab another, but they’re my bedtime books

45…! :eyes: In my defence, it’s pretty much all manga - I’ll read a chapter then move on to a different series.

Does the number ever go down? Or does it just keep going up? :joy:

I think we all know the answer to that!

I have … 2 that I read in the morning, 1 that I read at lunch, 3 that I pick from to read in bed before sleeping, 3 or 4 that I read in the evening on a bookclub schedule, 2 (in English) that I’m borrowing from my store and reading “when I can” (ie almost never), 1 or 6 other books in English that I aspire to be reading (and actually did read one of them the other day when my phone was broken so I didn’t have access to my primary Japanese dictionary!) …

I should have a book to read when I’m early to work. Or in line at the grocery store? I need to make more book slots available, is what I’m saying!

Book clubs definitely complicate this one but even without them I’d probably still be in the 5-10 range. I do this in English too so I think it’s just how I am. I need different reads to switch things up.

I said 4-6, but it’s probably more than that (and 4-6 only covers my Japanese reading, although I’m only reading* 2 books in English right now)

*This all depends on what you mean by reading. I have 6 books that I’m actively making progress on in Japanese, one more manga that I’m a chapter in and planning on circling back to once I’m done with some book club reading, and a manga that I read a chapter of and then decided that I have too much to read right now, but is probably top of the pile to pull from if/when I get bored of what I’m working on. In English I have a book club book that I’m behind in, but try to make daily progress in, and one more that’s just for me. And one I started in June that will probably get read once my book club is done. How many books am I reading? :woman_shrugging:t4::upside_down_face:

Relatable. Painfully so.

Starting to think I’m the odd one out here

I usually only pick up a book in English to read it to completion and can do so within a few days (some times within a day if I’m not busy and need a break from Japanese).

But for Japanese, I try to stick to 1-3 books max though from that I will pick one to work on til it’s done, unless I get overwhelmed, then it’s read a chapter when I can and switch to something else before going back to it.

Currently, I haven’t read a book in English in months (last one was a story about sirens from mythology). For Japanese, I’ve kinda hit a wall with one series, so picked up a guided reader that I’m working through and then there’s a third book with shorter chapters that I kinda want to use for intensive reading.

When reading for pleasure I tend to read one book at a time and only start another book once I finish it. If I’m reading through a massive tome (such as the Stormlight Archive series) then I may pause it and read another book for a break before continuing, but that is the exception.

When reading for language learning, I tend to have at least half a dozen different series going (mostly manga), and mostly read whatever I feel like at the time with not much thought into what else I’ve already started.

I feel like the odd one, cuz I don’t read books in English (maybe in a year from now, I will again) :joy:

Anyway, I’m impressed by people who can read 1 book at a time. Tho I do occasionally read something straight through… But even then, I was already in the middle of other books

If I had more time to read, I would stick to only one, maybe two books at a time.

If I had more time to read I’d have even worse restraint I think

This year I’ve read more books in Japanese (28 so far, not including textbooks) than I have in English (around 7, 5 of which were read in a week :joy:). But the Japanese books are read across days or weeks in short stints.

I just get confused if I read too many at once, especially in Japanese.

If I had more time to read, I would procrastinate worse and end up reading nothing :rofl:

Lol. The ultimate personality test.

I usually have at least one “easy” fallback book, plus however many book clubs I’m in, plus whatever series I’m most interested in progressing right now. Occasionally I also have a book to read in English in the rotation too.

I guess it doesn’t really feel like the manga book clubs are “in progress” when most of them are 1 chapter a week though, like I’ll do all my manga book clubs in one day then not touch them again until the next week.

Right now I have 6 books and 3 anime in progress, which is a relatively high water mark for me.

I currently have 4 manga in my reading list, but selected the 1-3 option. There is always a main manga. The other ones are usually new mangas that I just had to sample before returning to my main manga. So 3 of the 4 haven’t been read in a couple of months.

Also, if I’m reading a super hard one, I’ll read the easy one during the work week and the hard one on weekends.

I’m currently reading 2 books in English (I also have 3 I kinda dropped halfway and still want to get back to in the near future), 3 in Japanese + 2 manga series… that’s been around the average amount for this year too. Sometimes I have +1 book in a 3rd language too. I think if I had more time to read, I’d probably grab even more kindle books in Japanese and definitely continue a few of the English ones I dropped…
