Should have made it 20-34% to actually include 1/3, let‘s pretend I had done it that way.

I said 2-3 episodes but it’s usually 1-2, 3 is pretty rare but it’s almost as often 1 as it is 2.

It also is pretty dependent on how many series I’m watching. If I’m watching more than 5 at a time, it’s usually 1 from each, but if it’s more like 2 at a time, it’s more likely to be multiple episodes of each.

I also tend to pile up simulcasts so I can watch 2 at a time. I guess 2 episodes feels like a nice meal of a show, 1 is a light lunch and 3+ feels like pigging out :joy:

When I have a series that is shown in one go (一挙放送) I usually “rip“ the recording i.e. watch the episodes on separate days

Depends on how many seasonals I like. This seasons I’m at 9-11, but other seasons it’s like 3-6, plus w/e I decide to randomly watch.

I put 4-6 on the poll tho, cuz I think that’s more common for me.

I actually make one exception from the one episode per series rule, like if the series is complicated as e.g. 狼と香辛料 I tend to watch the new episode together with a re-watch of the one from the previous week.

Do you find you understand the previous episode significantly better the 2nd time around, when doing this?

Not remarkably better but significantly in the sense that I can observe a difference.

With complicated series I tend to have phases where I am more attentive and others where I am relaxing. So together with the re-watch, where I can try to switch the phases, the all-in-all result is better than just a single watch.

I just became aware of the fact that on the series level I do the same concerning reading and watching. Like apart from some one shots/test reads of some series in-between, I am currently reading about 20 series (about 15 manga and 5 novel series) and usually just one book, before I change/circle further through the series.

Also for future polls like thus, might be better to have dedicated 0 and 100 options

I left them out deliberately, as some people might feel pressured by them.

I stumbled on this topic again and thought I’d resurrect it…

Do you read non-fiction books in your target language?

  • Yes, occasionally
  • Not really / not at all

I’m like, yes occasionally, but once my language level allows it I’ll read way more. But that wasn’t a choice

I probably should, but haven’t really come across too many that have grabbed my attention

Edit: this inspired me to start a new book. Hopefully it’s not too hard

I want do dive into Japanese non-fiction, but I’m honestly a little bit scared by it. Perhaps I should make an effort to join in with the Non-fiction club every once in a while next year…

There’s a lot of lower level NF stuff Japanese Nonfictions Difficulty List | Natively

Tho you read L30s stuff anyway. I’d be surprised if that doesn’t cover you for a lot

I’ll have to give it look sometime, see if anything piques my interest.

Very true, granted. Anything I’m missing would likely only be technical vocabulary, and once I pick that up the book should be defenseless before me.

If I think about it, I actually read quite some non fiction stuff already, namely astronomical and astrophysical articles written more or less for non scientists on https://sorae.info

But in book form I read almost nothing yet. Nonetheless I changed my vote to occasionally.

I’m guessing it would be a mix for me. I’m hoping reading some of this sort of stuff would help me fix some of my speaking 癖…

But if you read about a topic you already know about, then you also know the technical vocab (thus can guess its meaning from the kanji or katakana quite often, even if the pronunciation might not always be clear). This also has the advantage that the contents will interest you.

That’s btw, why I searched for that site I mentioned above.

Nice question. I enjoy biographies, which is a pretty easy genre for nonfiction to get into and I need to get back into the Japanese history manga club (WK).

Next up I’m looking forward to reading about Tabata training from… Tabata himself!
