Who are we? (Natively user statistics)

The languages in this poll are very unscientifically chosen based on the Languages used on the Internet wiki site. Only the first 19 because that’s as big as a poll can be

You could remove English and add the 20th one since we already have a question about English specifically, but I suspect we still would be missing several native languages of members here… I thought of doing something like this with language families or writing systems, but there would probably still be too many for a poll.

You could base it off most people voting they are from Europe/NA and focus on languages being used in Europe, but that would feel a bit weird and self centered
And people in NA (and also Europe, of course) often have an additional native language outside of the primary used language from that country anyway.

I also thought about doing language families, but couldn’t decide which one to include…

Maybe someone gets inspired to make a better poll based on those considerations

Was surprised at the way German was taught abroad… then I remembered how I was taught English and French and went “nvm”.

I’m wondering how much are east-asia and how much are west-asia, cause that can be 6-7 hours in time zone difference lol

that’s true for North America as well, though. and probably Africa and South America… but I am not as familiar with their timezones.

really? I honestly thought it’ll be 4 hours max a difference there
the more you know :joy:

edit: I use lol too muc, I need a new way to express myself

Number of timezones according to google:

North America: 8
South America: 5
Africa: 6

I almost learned Dutch this year, because I was supposed to do an internship there. That ended up not happening, but maybe next year, plus Dutch is a really interesting language. So a Dutch bookclub? Or even better, Dutch on Natively (:eyes: @brandon) ? That’d be great!

I really just used the “seven-continent model”. There are a few ways to count continents, and this is the one that has the most separate parts that I know of.

But it would definitely make sense to divide it up more. I just don’t really know what the best way would be, but we can always do more polls that nail things down more

Also, since we have the timezones, ppl can kind of figure out what part of the world someone is in. :eyes:

Using Oceania instead of Australia might be more complete. Like NZ or polynesians won’t say they are in Australia.

As we all know, NZ doesn’t exist. :face_in_clouds:

This feels like a bit of a cheat. I don’t think Hawaii should really count since it’s an island far away from the main continent. Also, apparently Newfoundland has its own timezone so it can be 3.5 hours instead of 4 hours away from UTC. So it feels more like 6 time zones to me than 8. :man_shrugging:

It would be like saying during daylight savings time we have an extra time zone just because Arizona stays on standard time. :joy:

Yeah, but if I edit we would lose all the votes… :frowning: But feel free to make a new poll, like I said it would also make sense to split it up more.

Regarding people correctly “identifying” themselves, I would, for example, never be able to split up Europe as I think there are many different visions as to what counts as “central Europe”

Edit: I could also make a screenshot of the current state and then edit  but ppl would probably not see that they have to vote again… I could also close my poll and make a new one here? Ahhhh no idea.

I feel this is getting a bit off topic but i feel compelled to respond to this because I’ve been thinking of it lately.

thoughts about reading in German

Likely because most people who learn German do so because they have some practical use for it (for work, they will move to Germany etc), and not because they are a fan of their cultural output. (Although to contradict myself immediately: I have a friend who studies it because they enjoy german metal and the sound of the language).

I learned Germans as a child as 2nd language, or 3rd depending on whether you count by accusition order or by how well you speak each. I read a lot of german kids books then, but now when I seek out there really isn’t that much original german content that I find interesting. There is some stuff of course, like Kafka or Michael Ende, but it’s not compareable to japanese media. I settled mostly to reading translations in German.

The other reason I think is, that the German language unfairly or not is regarded to not be very emotive and more matter of fact. My personal opinion is that it’s not wholly untrue, I read the communist manifesto in German and English both and the English version feels so much more dramatic, while the German original more down to earth. Even when the actual meaning is the same.
