We can always read the first three and do a vibe check on if people want to move on to a different series or continue on to the sequel.
I would not join at a pace of one volume per week. Of course I can read a volume that quickly, but I don’t like having a book club crowd out my other reading material that significantly. It turns what should be enjoyable into an obligation instead.
Obviously if that’s the consensus go forward without me, but I wanted to mention my opinion. A poll on pace probably makes sense once a series is officially decided on.
I’m also a little iffy on that pace, tho I’ll try to keep up, if that’s what the group goes with
A book a week is probably too fast for me too (considering this will be my… 4th or 5th club), but I think much slower than half a book a week would mean it’d be literal years to get through much of the CLAMP catalog.
I also am don’t remember if Rayearth is one of the more text sparse manga or not, but there are definitely some CLAMP series where there is maybe 2-3 words over 5 or so pages on a fairly regular basis.
Anyway no matter what I think we should have a vote on pace and start date
Looking through the previews for vol 1 & 2, it’s got a good amount of text, except for battle shots
Yeah, definitely more text heavy than something like CCS.
How do you make a poll here lol, I didn’t see documentation on it
You click “reply“ and then “build poll“ under the tooth wheel icon and follow the steps.
omg duh lol I don’t know how I missed that
- 20 pages/week
- 40 pages/week
- 60 pages/week
- 80 pages/week
- 100 pages/week
Are the no proper chapter breaks? I didn’t see a ToC in the digital version, but I wasn’t sure.
I looked through my copy and didn’t see any chapter breaks. Might be able to break it up based on scene change or something like that.
I voted for 60 pages/week because I think 3-4 weeks per volume is a good pace.
We can let the poll run a little longer, but based on the current poll results, we could do a schedule that looks something like this. I paged through and tried to find natural stopping points since there are no chapters, but I am totally OK with modifying based on what people think.
Week | Page # |
---|---|
Week 1 | 1-60 |
Week 2 | 61-123 |
Week 3 | 124-201 |
What’s Magic Knight Rayearth about? My only exposure to CLAMP is a very confused younger me reading like a volume of X and a volume of Tokyo Babylon and having no idea what was going on, haha. They’re such a big name in terms of history and influence, though, that I wouldn’t mind reading some of their material.
It’s a magical girl-mecha isekai where three girls have to save the world. From what I remember it is darker than you would think from a quick glance.
From anilist (I didn’t feel like looking up a synopsis specific to the manga)
Three young girls, Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu, are transported to a magical world called Cephiro during a field trip to Tokyo Tower. They are soon greeted by Master Mage Clef, who explains to them that they have been summoned to become the Legendary Magic Knights and save Cephiro. The girls are less than enthusiastic about this idea, and only want to return home. Clef further explains that they must seek out the three Rune Gods to help them fight. He bestows armor and magical powers to each of them. They learn from Clef that High Priest Zagato has kidnapped the Pillar of Cephiro, Princess Emeraude. The Pillar of Cephiro has the sole responsibility of keeping Cephiro alive and in balance with her prayers. Without Princess Emeraude, Cephiro would fall into ruin. Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu must fight off Zagato’s henchman and find the Rune Gods if they ever want to get back home. They soon learn that friendship and loyalty are the only things they can rely on in the crumbling Cephiro.
(Basically what @p.james99 said )
Edit: I realized that this summarizes probably 2/3 of the first book so I put up a spoiler.
Thank you both! I’ll try to see if I can join once the club starts up!
This looks like a nice idea so far - I haven’t posted so far as I’m in many bookclubs currently, and I’m afraid of overcommitting… so I’m not sure if I’ll join, but Rayearth definitely seems interesting and I’ll keep an eye on it.
I’ll also add this poll for a start date:
- 9/1/2024
- 9/8/2024
- 9/15/2024
- 9/22/2024
- 9/29/2024
- 10/6/2024
