Continuing on our challenge to ourselves to boost our listening skills, the April challenge is ready for signups! Set whatever number of hours feels like a reasonable goal for you and feel free to share the things you’re listening to, your successes and setbacks. We’re in this together
All languages welcome!
This post will be a wiki so you can add and update your own hours.
New to the Forums, not new to Japanese. Rather than rush in with a Learning Log or similar, I figured I’d join a challenge to keep myself motivated and accountable. I hope new people are welcome, if not, I will happily wait until I’ve been around longer.
I am preparing to a move back to Japan in 3 months, so I am doing an absolute ton of listening. I am setting a goal for 90 Hours, or 3 hours per day. I was able to blast past this in February and March, but I want to do slightly more reading in April.
Thank you for setting this up @暁のルナ! @Triddy welcome to the forums! That’s an impressive goal, I’m sure it’ll help tons to get that much exposure before moving back to Japan.
I’ll join the challenge as well, but I want to prepare some resources before I set up my home post.
Welcome, Triddy! Glad to have you, and I look forward to seeing what you listen to. Good luck with your 90 hours; I think the only other person I’ve seen do such a high goal was @javerend, who did 100 hours in one month sometime last year, iirc?
It was! I did 100 hours of tracked listening last year in february, and it absolutely supercharged my listening ability and stamina. I hope you have fun doing this and I hope you can see some similar great results @Triddy !
I consider myself “Advanced” in Japanese already, but I mostly want to surprise my friends with my improvement when I get back to Tokyo. To that effect I’ve been consistently doing 6 hours a day of Japanese since Early January. Not all listening though.
Who knows if its helped, but I don’t have anything else going on right now, so it can’t hurt.
This seems to be a good time trying to push up my listening skills. I have some podcast episodes on JapanesePod101 I want to listen to and also some audio from SatoriReader.
Thanks, @eefara for the calendar template link. I will use this, too. Looks quite cute!
Ugh, this is all of my listening practice encapsulated into one sentence, haha. I feel like I’m actually living one of those “do this for 5 minutes a day get fluent in a week!!!” shortcut articles since I can’t consciously feel any improvements until some time later.
I really like having a calendar; if I didn’t I’d definitely forget a day here or there just through being unable to remember what day it is.
Just stumbled across the Yuyu Podcast collaboration with SatoriReader As I wanted to listen on SatoriReader for this challenge, I directly added those goals. Wow, I’m looking forward to this collaboration. I like Yuyu’s podcast and SatoriReader so there is no chance it cannot be good
I’ll join with a goal of 24h of non-anime Japanese — because if I could include anime, I think 24h may not be challenging enough. Bonus points for dialectal speech and live streams.
I will join in again, been doing relatively well with regular listening recently though I’ve not been tracking exact times.
My plan is to use my audiobooks alongside the physical books (or e-books if I use Harry Potter) and do read along sessions a chapter at a time, as well as the vocab audiobooks I have with sentences.
Going to aim for 30 hours as a start and 60 hours as a stretch goal. (Chapters are averaging about 20-30m)
My time-tracking will most likely be very approximate, but I do want to get some listening done each day. Let’s aim for an average of 30 minutes a day!
I’m back!
I’ve been listening most days, but without quotas lately so I hadn’t been joining. I’m not going to set a quota this month either, but I will track and maybe make some challenges towards the end of the month.
Well I’ve started off by going back to episodes I skipped in 美少女戦士セーラームーン | L24 … But also I’m hoping to get more non-anime audio in this month. So reading the remaining portion of 本好きの下剋上~司書になるためには手段を選んでいられません~第一部「兵士の娘1」 | L32with the audiobook at 1.5x (that only worked for the parts I’d already read)
