I listened to three 20-minutes episodes of Nihongo con Teppei (now at #81) and I watched Antihero episode 1 (the real episode 1 this time) during 1h34 — quite a bit more time compared to the 1h08 runtime but that is because they throw a bunch of hard words here and there.
I think I’ll try to join this month as I picked up Spanish again.
Spanish Listening Goal: 20 hours
Podcast: Learn Spanish and Go (really enjoying the conversation style and its p understandable to me as some level in beginner. And the eps are ~30 minutes long).
Video: Dreaming Spanish probably will watch some videos here and there
Today was a big day for my Japanese.
- 3h of conversation tables
- 2h40 of アンチヒーロー S1 | L32 (amazing show)
- 1h20 of Nihongo con Teppei Original (now at episode #85)
A total of 7h in one day.
When watching Antihero in the train, on my way to the conversation tables, there was one scene where the public prosecutor yelled しぶんだ! and yet the subtitles said it was 詭弁だ! I feared that my ears were leading me astray and making me hear things that aren’t there but a native confirmed that he did say しぶん instead of きべん. If it weren’t for subtitles, I would have never made the link between しぶん and きべん though.
Managed at least 2h 30m today between Japanese with Hikari podcasts (there’s only a few so far), YouTube grammar study videos in Japanese only (finally understand why my tutor looked at me weird when I said I “forgot” a word, and listening to several “read-aloud” videos on よまにゃチャンネル (YouTube).
Feel like I’m slipping back into old habits with some things so trying to vary the content, both level and subjects as well as form. Hoping this will help me to continue to consume content, though I think I do need to do more passive listening as well (I’ve only been actively listening for this challenge and recording times for active listening recently).
Total so far: 9h 27m
I watched an episode of 슈취타 (with Taeyang) that I had already seen with English subtitles. That didn’t help much since I had forgotten all of it, but with a lot of pausing and reading the partial subtitles, I made do.
I did feel like giving up as I was tired and had a hard time focusing, but then I remembered this is a
challenge
and powered through to make future-me proud.
30 minutes today, which brings the total for the week to 4h and 10 minutes.
Doing a weekly update (although it’s Sunday afternoon and I should probably watch just like one more thing bc) I’m at just under 10 hours for the week (9:56).
About a third of that (3:03) is from the three audiobooks I’m reading:
四つ子 is the only one I’m listening to without text, the other two I read along with the audiobooks.
I have a little over an hour (1:08) with podcasts (all 4989 American Life this week), and the rest is TV shows:
In progress
Finished
- アオのハコ S1 | L24
- ハニーレモンソーダ S1 | L25 (no subs)
Overall not bad, and not what I’d consider unsustainable for me (as long as I have shows I’m excited to watch a few episodes of a day). I’m planning to check out a few new anime this week so that will help get my numbers up for next week.
I also sometimes read novels along to TTS, but I don’t count that as listening since I mostly do it to speed up my reading/not have to look up readings for words I know/can deduce the meaning of.
Listened to the 4 Japanese with Hikari podcasts once through, then a second time after lunch - 48m session for all 4. Total for both sessions - 1h 36m
Then 2 episodes of Naruto - 42m between the 2
May edit if I do any more later that isn’t passive listening.
Total for today so far - 2h 18m
Running total - 11h 45m
Alrighty, finally updated my weekend listening. Watched 千と千尋の神隠し | L23 on Sunday and started わたしの幸せな結婚 | L31 as my next audiobook. 幸せな結婚 is going pretty smoothly so far; it feels easier than L31 for sure.
Ohh that’s good to know…
I’m going through 本好き right now like “wait, is L32 this easy?
” and eyeing some other low 30s series. (Although from what other people have said, the series gets harder so the マイン is a child books are probably easier than the series grading…)
Oooh this is good to know. I see the novels have jpdb decks too! I’ve watched a few eps of the anime, and found i could follow it with subs, but had to look stuff up as I went.
I’m going through 本好き right now like “wait, is L32 this easy?
I think this also has something to do with who’s grading it. A lot of people seem to pick it as an early fantasy or LN read. But same, it’s helped me get over my knee-jerk “L30s is probably too hard” impulse a bit.
Only managed 35m today between;
textbook audio repeated twice - 16m total
2 chapters of 彗星とさいごの竜 read along - 19m
Total so far - 12h 20m
I got caught up in writing this morning before work and it’s been a full day so just managed a chapter of 彗星とさいごの竜 - 15m
Running total: 12h 35m
I’ve been quietly continuing with the challenge. Been away from home, and its a bit of a pain to update everything from mobile.
I’ve largely switched from anime to shadowing an easy podcast. I’m not particularly burned out–in fact, there are a couple series I’m eager to watch. But as part of my larger learning plan, I track 6 categories of immersion/study, and I like to keep them to specific numbers. Shows/Audio Visual stuff had gotten way out of whack, from a planned 25% to almost 50%. So its on to Shadowing Podcasts for the next few days almost exclusively. (I doubt anyone is curious, but its 25% Videos, 25% Audio only/shadowing, 25% Reading, 10% Gaming/entertainment, 10% SRS, 5% Traditional Study)
Still using Yuyuの日本語podcast for shadowing. Its not hard to understand and he uses relatively simple language, but he speaks clearly and evenly, and Id like to try to sound like that as much as possible.
5-day work week update.
- 2h20 of Antihero (all they do is talking and yet it is so epic)
- 2h of Nihongo con Teppei Original (now at episode #91)
- 28 mins of みことね (方言 bonus points)
This week I learned that Lotus removes any mention of “Spéculoos” on their packages exported to other countries, and Japanese people call it ロータスクッキー.
Didn’t manage to listen yesterday and only managed 18m today (one chapter of 彗星とさいごの竜). After tomorrow I have a few days off so hopefully will get more done then.
Total so far: 12h 53m
Update:
Really enjoying Learn Spanish and Go podcast— listen 30 minutes to work and 30 minutes home everyday. Sometimes I sneak some more in if I take a drive for an errand.
I’ve also been having my mom listen if she tags along for the errand which is probably more fun for me than her heh. But it’s nice bc since I’m driving, I don’t search up things but I can ask her. It’s also nice the woman host is Mexican, since I’m learning more about this culture that is my heritage. Even my mom is learning some stuff though, because the woman is from a different state hehe. So fun all around. But yeah I can see myself keeping up this current pace as long as I can listen to this podcast without getting bored.
Ohh sorry it’s specifically for Spanish not like a tracking app. It’s the dreamingspanish website haha it automatically logs the videos you watch on their platform (but I mostly use it to log anything Spanish). I agree it’s really pleasing to look at tho ![]()
Aw darn. I was hoping it was some sort of tracking app ![]()
I haven’t done much listening this week but I did keep my streak, and watched a short episode of Didi’s Korean Podcast on days where I hadn’t done anything else. Today I finally managed to sit down and watch an episode of Move to Heaven (49 minutes).
That being said, listening is still not as fun as I’d hoped, it’s a lot of effort and mental strain. When does it get easier? ![]()
My total so far is 6h35 minutes, so still on track.
