A meta-book club. We vote on what kind of club we want to be (like, sports manga book club), then we vote for one work and read it. Next round we start by voting on a theme again.
Also, we have a BL and Yuri book club. What about a het book club? I think I would like a club for romance, slice of life, comedy, drama manga that don’t fit into those existing clubs, including works with het relationships or no relationships at all. (Also, what do you call this collection of genre? My joking description would be anything that doesn’t have a real plot).
Wouldn’t it just be a romance club?
Tbh if you make a general romance club then I don’t think that many of the nominations will be GL/BL, or you can always add a note saying “we want to put an emphasis to the romance aspect and ask that you take into account other clubs that exist already for GL/BL themes”
Edit;
I was thinking romance in it’s more original use then the genre butaybe a general slice of life club will be a better fit
Personally I would way rather see a “Hetero romance & SoL book club” (which I genuinely think is a good idea, and would probly join) with a note that the GL/BL clubs exist, rather than a general “romance & SoL bookclub” that makes it sound like GL/BL is unwelcome. (the wording came off that way to me, even though I know that it wasn’t written with ill-intent)
I would say most romance and many drama manga have “real plot”. I guess you could call it a slice of life club since that is a general term for everyday life situations, and most romance, comedy, and drama series are also slice of life.
(If you’re not limiting it to romance I don’t really get the relevance of mentioning the BL and yuri clubs though.)
Oh, sorry about that, what I was trying to go for was more of a “majority of the romance/etc is media is het romance anyways and hence why GL/BL are put an emphasis on separately” kind of vibe but I guess it came out bad?
Go for it regardless, though I think if you want the focus to be het romance rather than drama/slice of life then the HL club like cat suggested would definitely work
Slice of life and drama are just a bit different than romance for me I guess, so I wasn’t sure what the focus is
No worries. Wording is tricky - particularly for something undefined that doesn’t exist yet!
As names go, maybe “the romance, drama & slice of life club”(?) and put in a note “for romance recs, since the GL/BL clubs already exist, we’re looking to focus on het relationships here”; and then have a group poll/policy about whether to allow exceptions or not.
In any case I’m not the one starting/running it. So I’ll leave it to @bbo since it was their suggestion.
We also have a (now apparently in hiatus) Iyashikei club. And we had suggestions for a manga only and a joseimuke club. I’m currently thinking less specific clubs might be better since, well my own interest are rather broad and I see the iyashikei and children club going into hiatus from time to time might mean there isn’t the interest to sustain more specific niches unless there are enough really passionate people (as it seems to be the case for the BL University).
Let’s poll.
Best new BC idea
Manga Club
Slice of life (manga?) Club (including romance, joseimuke, iyashikei, drama,…)
Specific (manga?) clubs for romance, joseimuke, etc
just wanted to preserve this because I absolutely love the fact that we all agreed to disagree in a way
all of the options got graded every number at least once and bbo didn’t vote with the same person twice
Sure, I’d be game for it. Was planning on picking it up close to release anyway, and I wouldn’t mind re-reading the first volumes; I’m sure I missed a bunch. Would be good to refresh my 関西弁.
if you’re up for rereading maybe I should make the thread and reread with notes there too, we can try creating a 関西弁 dictionary for the series or something
if more people join woohoo! if not it’s still an interesting project for dialect learning
Would anyone be interested in taking over administratorship of some of the clubs I’ve been running? This would include running polls, keeping track of nominations, updating the OP to reflect up-to-date information, running individual book club threads, etc. I’m just looking to free up a bit of time for myself, as it takes a while each week to make sure everyone’s updated and looking good, and I’ve found myself slipping more and more often in forgetting stuff these days.
Up for grabs:
Children’s Club (current club read is being handled by @Legato; will need to start thinking about next book poll in the next few weeks)
癒し系 Book Club (next book will likely start Feb 24, no home thread set up. Have asked @shitsurei if they’re interested in running that book)
Light Novel Club (I have already set up the home thread for the current read and will run it)
It’s not my club, so this might be a bit premature, but the CLAMP Club might need a helping hand in the near future, depending on when @p.james99 is able to pop back into the forums.
I guess it’s just been tradition at this point, haha. Iirc @cat set up the first club (the mystery club) and ran all the threads themselves, and then I set up the LN club, and I ran the individual books myself because I had the time and enjoyed doing so, and I guess it just kind of went from there?
I wouldn’t mind polling the clubs, though, to see if they’d like to move to a more WK-style system…
Yeah, I figured it was a matter of “that’s just how we started doing it”.
The WK-style system makes so much more sense to me. Work is shared, and the one making the nomination is probably the one who’s the most motivated since they wanted to read and/or share a book they are excited for, while the main club organizer might not even be interested in reading the book in the first place.
