Thanks! Got my first two in.

Nominations List
I’ve set up official Lists for the past reads and the nominations; please let me know if you’d like to be added as a contributor!
Okay, doing another interest check:
- Yes
- Yes, but participation depends on what’s picked
- No
Just me?
What if we did a poll with unlimited votes, just to see how much overlap there is among those who will only join if certain books are picked? (ie, poll instructions: vote for every book you would read with the club.) A certain minimum amount of participants could be the selection criteria for the deciding poll, maybe?
I wouldn’t expect a lot to change considering how picky we seem to be when I look at the past polls, but that also means that it cannot possibly hurt, so yeah, +1 for that proposal from me!
Actually, considering that this club does “lowest-voted 3 nominations are removed” I’m not sure why we aren’t always doing unlimited votes. That whole “under x% for the last 3 votes are removed” in other book clubs is the only reason I can see against it.
I do like that idea! Let’s do that and see what we end up with; it looks like we have a fair number of potentially interested people, but as always it’ll depend.
What would be a good number, do you think? Go ahead with the book if 1/3 of participants vote for it? 1/4? 1/2?
Hmm, tricky … It might help to see the results first before deciding. And also just to think about what a good size is for a book club. Three feels a bit lonely for me. Unless all three are very talkative haha. Five people seems like a reasonable minimum number, if everyone is okay with that. Maybe a poll is in order?
This is going to be highly unscientific and may or may not be helpful, but you won’t know until you try. So following up on the conversation with @Mara, and in an attempt to decide how many people is “enough”, let’s see what we get here. (Note for those in the audience and curious: yes, 2 people is the minimum you’d need for any book club, so don’t let your niche dreams be dreams. This is more for the purposes of, how many people is “enough” for the thread creator to want to maintain a book thread/weekly threads and for participants to feel like they’re interacting as part of a club and not just solo reading as a group, if that makes sense. Again, highly subjective.)
Please assume that only some fraction of participants will comment/ask questions each week.
- At least 2 people
- At least 3 people
- At least 4 people
- At least 5 people
- At least >= 6 people
I don’t know if we’d even want to use the results of this poll for our next Children’s book vote, but I’d like to see some data anyway if possible.
I think it depends a bit on if the people participating are actually participating and commenting on the weekly readings. I think if it’s very few people there’s almost more pressure to be responding in the threads, so would have to make sure they are enthusiastic about the pick.
My participation doesn’t really depend on who is all joining in but more on if I have the book already or can get a free copy online/ from my local library (a big stretch there).
If something I have gets picked though, I’m happy to join in.
Very true; I’m reminded of our current Spanish bookclub; there’s only the three of us currently, but everyone’s happy to check in each week. So while I’d normally prefer a larger crowd because I know most won’t post, the Spanish book club doesn’t meet that criteria but is still a fun club regardless.
Ah, and you’ll need to re-vote soggyboy, sorry. D:
I can vouch for feeling more obligated to speak in smaller groups The smaller the group the more likely I am to yap every week, even if it’s just “dang that chapter was crazy wasn’t it”
(Also @eefara looks like you repeated 13 twice in the nomination post)
Thank you; fixed!
That’s part of why I probably will only join if I want to read the book (in addition to being spread a little thin with book clubs already). I’ve also noticed that with this and the beginning LN club we lose readers because of difficulty, so even if we start with a lively chat, it’ll sometimes be only a few people participating by the end.

Content Warnings
I don’t if anybody actually gets killed, but these children are playing a game with their life on the line. Then again, it’s for upper elementary students, so it probably has nothing too gruesome?
Reason(s) for nominating:
This one has been on my list for a while now because it sounds properly exciting! It’s a high-stakes game at an actually approachable level of 25 with full furigana, which seems like a great combination for me. The Natively ratings and the review are also really positive.
From the theme it also seems like it will lend itself well to speculating about what’s going on, what will happen and who the werewolf might be, which often makes for lively and engaging book clubs - so just the thing we need!
Gah! I told myself I wouldn’t buy any new books, but if this one won I don’t think I’d be able to resist! Not my usual genre, but I’ve been watching the HunterXHunter anime and really enjoying all the psychological twistiness lately … Plus I like werewolves.
I’m not sure it contains any actual werewolves, but yeah, I’m also hoping for a bit psychological twistiness!
(If you want more of that, I can recommend the manga Liar Game.)
