The book is 530 pages long (text-length), and based on the Achtsam Morden book club, I propose we read between 50 and 60 pages a week, which gives a 10-week schedule. Tentative starting day is September 9, but can be changed if people need more time to get a copy.

Discussion Guidelines :

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent spoilers. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  • Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  • Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  • Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.

Posting Advice

When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Acquired my copy in the friendly neighbourhood bookstore today. On top of that, the store clerk immediately provided me with background information that the stories from this series can be read individually because they are not interconnected, but that the main characters remain the same (and also develop throughout the series). He put that into stark contrast with another series from the author called “Bablyon Berlin” (or maybe the latter is a movie or TV series?) which you need to read in order as everything is connected, at least according to what he told me.

Sometimes I’m not really sure whether I should love or hate people who give me random unsolicited infodumps  but I think I’ll go with “it’s okay, he was harmless” for now

Having read 5 books in the series so far, you can, of course, read them individually, but it’s a lot more interesting to read them sequentially, especially since (at least in the first 7 books, I think it changes a bit afterwards)each book takes place in a new year, and the political situation unfolds in the background.

Ah ok, now I get the connection! Initially I thought he was talking about a different series, but now his explanations make a lot more sense

That’s what he mentioned as well

I must confess I may or may not have started to read the first week’s assignment (as it was lying around on my desk looking at me anyway), and it may or may not have been extremely gripping so far

Also, I think for our next round of voting I will go to that bookstore again and ask for a recommendation or two  because why not leverage the power of the experts!
