Final Week - クラスで2番目に可愛い女の子と友だちになった | L27 - Light Novel Club

Week 14

Q: Maki asks what Asanagi is doing with her hands when they’re huddled together - (回してるというか at around 65% in my epub) … she’s putting it around him (I think his arm, but maybe over his shoulders?), right? It’s a bit hard to visualise other than she’s being very forward

jesus christ, you kids, are you kidding me

/Edit oh, the drama!

I read it as her wrapping her arm(s) around his. Note that 手 can mean hand or arm

It can?

Damn, I always knew 足 can be leg or foot, but I never realized that 手 was also inclusive of arm…

Hand is even the second entry there… my whole worldview had just been blown wide open.

Also, I caught back up. Yay.

Btw I randomly asked one of my teachers what the meaning of ボーイフレンド was. His immediate response was 彼氏… and when I explained why I was asking, he clarified that some people who know enough English try to sound clever by relying on the possible “boy friend” meaning… which as we all already noted is ridiculous, b/c nobody uses it like that in English. So I guess that tells us something about 空 lol

Umi is … めんどくさい. I would probably be angrier in this situation.

Ooh we’re up to this point in the story! I thought there was an illustration I was looking forward to, but I guess it’s a scene from the manga. I’ll include it when I catch up

Week 15 small reply

From Yuu’s perspective, Maki’s perspective or both? I think in Maki’s shoes I’d have a similar reaction, for better or worse. If I were Yuu, I’d be pretty hurt

As somebody who was somewhat (fairly?) 面倒くさい back in high school and had a few 面倒くさい friends… I sympathize with everyone involved…

There’s gotta be something deeper going on for her to be acting like this.

Week 15

I’m taking about Maki’s perspective.

From Yuus perspective she at least know a little about what’s going on. She knows Umi for longer and how she ticks and she knew before she confronted her that something is off.

From Maki’s perspective his only friend (whom he just met and doesn’t have a long secure relationship with) suddenly stopped taking to him out of no where. From his perspective what happened on the weekend was a thing strictly between Umi and Yuu. Why would she suddenly ignore him? It would be reasonably to assume that she doesn’t want to be friends anymore and it sucks being put into that situation without any explanation.

Umi obviously didn’t seem to be thinking about any of this. I’m not quite sure if she thought Maki could read her mind and see that she is just sulking. Or is she really wanted to give up on him before Yuu y takes him away from her or something. But I don’t think her behavior is acceptable.

Week 15

Sort of… But he’s clearly involved, and involving himself

That’s certainly a reasonable assumption in general, if someone stops talking to you. In context it doesn’t make any sense, since like you said this is fundamentally some issue btwn her & Yuu. Maki & Umi have only been getting closer, and there’s clearly something else going, which Maki is perceptive/mature enough to realize apparently

I think she’s just too caught up in whatever it is bothering her/that she’s so afraid of, and couldn’t (or didn’t - if you want to be cynical) pull herself out of it, until forced. It seems pretty clear from their dialogue in the storage room or w/e that she knows she’s acting in a problematic way, and that Maki couldn’t possibly have any clue what’s going on. She also seems super afraid of rejection.

I’ll agree tho that it would be understandable for him to be upset about it.

Week 15

delayed but finally finished

These dorks are too cute

I’m in a weird spot where I like what I’m reading but I’d like it more if it was easier/I was better at reading it, because I am definitely still missing major chunks of context because I am not treating it as a study text and exhaustively going over it unless I feel like it (and because life is life I don’t really feel like it right now). And yet, somehow, I still feel like I’m getting better at reading, even though I’m not really actively ‘studying’ the text right now. Well, whatever! Take the wins for now I guess!

I think reading is a bit like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. Some parts will just come together in the natural flow of things, and you’ll fill in the picture gradually as you go. But then there’s still those parts you need to really think about. You’re getting better at the part that comes together gradually… which is the majority of putting together the puzzle.

Btw, I think I was in a similar spot when I first read it. At the very least, there were a number of spots I wasn’t totally sure about - and (as we’ve seen) some comprehension mistakes that persisted even through future reads  Book 2 was also pretty challenging for me , in a “I definitely wanna reread this someday, to make sure I understood it” way.

As an aside, I just got reminded that when I first picked this up, I initially thought it would be a yuri novel, cuz of the cover :joy: I have since developed better cover literacy :joy:

Playing catch up now I have put down the グリムガル book and wow I have whiplash.

Nothing to comment on week 13, I guess.

About week 14

久しぶりに自分からかける電話の相手は、もちろん朝凪。

Okay, that’s different from before. That and his reaction while making the call are a lot more convincing that his feeling may be more than just friendship.

「ねえ、前原」
「ん? なに?」
「ちょっと呼んでみただけ~」

Speaking of comparisons with グリムガル, I liked it better when a certain character did that in that series instead.

やんわりと腕を払って作業の続きへ。

Aaaand I’m back to thinking they shouldn’t be together.

「朝凪、ここは俺が話すよ」

What?? No?!? What is wrong with you?

Okay, I’m at week 15! Time to stop reading and get behind again!

百合の間に挟まれたわたしが、勢いで二股してしまった話 | L27 is ok, and has a nice writing style and wordplay

彼なんかより、私のほうがいいでしょ? | L27 seems on the trashy side, but is by the author of わたしの百合も、営業だと思った? | L28 which is decent

声優ラジオのウラオモテ | L28 is pretty great, if you’re ok with possibly eternal subtext (I’ve only read through book 6/11)

That’s all I’ve got tho… Most yuri LNs I’ve read are more complicated and/or fantasy

セトラ & ハル?

Not following why here

I get where he was coming from, but yeah wasn’t the brightest idea

She is making a move and he bluntly rejected her. After calling her too. In her place, I would say I remembered something and leave.

Mm I’ll wait till I (re)read it to follow up

My take it that they are good, reasonable people that would make a good couple and everything that seems to contradict this is the author’s fault/bad writing, not the characters fault.

So we should imagine a similar, but different story where things actually make sense.
Well, I can get behind that. Death of the author and all that.

(Finally) finished this week. I read it in so many small chunks that I can’t tell if my comprehension was low (although it didn’t feel like it in the moment) or that my reading was so piecemeal that I struggled to remember what exactly was going on in the scene when I picked it back up. Ah well.

I thought I knew what they were making with their mosaic art, but some of these descriptions in this chapter are throwing me off for what I think they’ll end up with. (Good thing there’s an anime coming at some point :joy:).
