Okay, time to roll up my sleeves and actually start the book now that I’m back from vacation and have to answer to real life responsibilities.
Same here! 頑張って!
@bibliothecary I was going through my physical omnibus to mark pages I needed to read, and noticed some discrepancies with what the schedule had noted down page-wise:
Week | Start Date | Chapter | End page (original) | End page (combined) | No. of pages | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Dec 11 | 1 | 27 | 25 → 28 | 19 | end of chapter |
2 | Dec 18 | 2 | 41 → 46 | 16 | line ending: 何がおめでたいものか! | |
3 | Dec 25 | 2 | 58 | 57 → 62 | 16 | end of chapter |
4 | Jan 1 | 3 | 73 → 80 | 16 | line ending: …人生経験豊冨なの? | |
5 | Jan 8 | 3 | 91 | 88 → 95 | 15 | end of chapter |
(I haven’t checked further than this)
I’m guessing the original ending page numbers for the combined edition were generated from an ebook?
Yeah, I thought I made a note of that under the table, but apparently not.
If you can note down the rest of the numbers for the physical copy, I’ll add it to the table.
Sure! I’ll have that up later today.
Well, I forgot to finish this after work yesterday; sorry about that. Anyway, you should just be able to copy/paste this table:
Week | Start Date | Chapter | End page (original) | End page (combined) | No. of pages | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Dec 11 | 1 | 27 | 28 | 22 | end of chapter |
2 | Dec 18 | 2 | 46 | 18 | line ending: 何がおめでたいものか! | |
3 | Dec 25 | 2 | 58 | 62 | 16 | end of chapter |
4 | Jan 1 | 3 | 80 | 18 | line ending: …人生経験豊冨なの!? | |
5 | Jan 8 | 3 | 91 | 95 | 15 | end of chapter |
6 | Jan 15 | 4 | 109 | 14 | line ending: …それとも新参者のおれ自身なのか。 | |
7 | Jan 22 | 4 | 117 | 121 | 12 | end of chapter |
8 | Jan 29 | 5 | 132 | 136 | 15 | end of chapter |
9 | Feb 5 | 6 | 151 | 156 | 20 | end of chapter |
10 | Feb 12 | 7-8 | 168 | 168 | 12 | end of chapter |
11 | Feb 19 | 9 | 182 | 14 | line ending: 「こ っ‥‥‥」 | |
12 | Feb 26 | 9 | 196 | 14 | line ending: …状況について話し始めた。 | |
13 | Mar 4 | 9 | 205 | 209 | 13 | end of chapter |
14 | Mar 11 | 10 | 217 | 222 | 13 | end of chapter |
I can’t find the ending page for week 12. Could you give me more of the surrounding sentences to search it out?
Just looked it up in my ebook. Just before there is:
武人としては認めている方の弟と
then someone starts talking. (It’s right in the middle of a conversation)
Thank you!
The full ending line for week 12 is 末弟たちが来ていたことに対してか、 微かに眉を上げた後、 武人としては認めている方の弟と状況にっいて話し始めた。
について
I’ll go looking for it, but do we want to end a week’s reading in the middle of a paragraph @bibliothecary? Why not move it to the end of the paragraph?
Edit: found it! And my mistake, it’s not the middle of a paragraph. I’ll go update that table.
Okay, the table is updated - I found my physical copy that I mislaid, so the original has all the page numbers, too.
Only took til week 4 to get sorted, I’m so on top of things.
It is in the ebook but I guess we can deal with it when we get there.
Hmmm. I’ll go double-check that in a little bit in my physical copy, just to be sure.
So double-checking this, it looks like it’s not technically inside of a paragraph (there’s a line break for dialogue after), but it’s not before a “big” line break either.
I don’t know how much of a hot issue it is to have it there; I’ve gotten way off on this tangent. Anyway, if there are any concerns ending there for whatever reason, I can definitely help scout a new place.
Yeah, I didn’t put much thought into where the breaks were, as long as they were at the end of a sentence/paragraph. Feel free to suggest better stopping points!
Again, in the ebook, those are clearly together. In most cases (including in this book) dialogue will start on the next line (inline dialogues are also used in the book to either give a sense that it happens immediately or in the background, but that’s not the norm).
I guess I could just read ahead to check for a different break, but I think it’s fine for now (especially considering the number of people currently reading at the decided pace). Worst case scenario, we’ll just keep reading past it.
felt like this might be relevant here
the manga version is on sale
So, hum, I ended up reading all the way to the last week (but haven’t finished the book yet). You know. For the cause.
There’s no proper break until the end of the chapter, so there’s indeed no other way than cutting somewhere in the middle. However, in terms of flow, it makes much more sense to stop a few sentences before, with the one finishing in
[…] やっとのことで飲み下した。
Edit: speaking of which, the previous break has the same problem. It’s a break happening midway through something the character is saying. It’s marginally better to stop two sentences (of narration) later, even though we still don’t get the end of what he is saying. The break could be at:
[…] 薄茶の翼は痙攣していた。
Edit: after some unsuccessful attempts at reading my current book, I just gave in and read the last chapter as well The end was quite unexpected… Not sure if I’ll keep reading, but I’ll wait for the club to finish anyway.
Great, I’ll update the schedule - which weeks are these for?
