There are 3 of the characters that feature on most of the covers throughout the whole series. Thats what made me think that they wouldn’t all involve werewolf games because of how repetitive that would be, but going by the extended titles they actually might.
Looking forward to this one. It’s been in my wishlist for a while. Just wish I could get it on Japanese Amazon for my kindle. Unlike Bookwalker, it has a dictionary function for novels.
Same! And yeah, I’ll also reading it on Kindle - couldn’t imagine to do it without a dictionary. What’s your trouble with buying it on Japanese Amazon?
Last time I tried to use my card it didn’t work so I’ve been buying gift cards on play-asia ever since. However, I can’t buy them on there anymore.
Ah, gotcha. Yeah, I heard that amazon.co.jp has problems with credit cards for some people. Sorry to hear that you’re one of them.
What’s the problem with PlayAsia though? I haven’t tried buying a gift card there in a long time, but if I still can - want me to buy one for you? You could send me the necessary money via PayPal. (Or if you’d rather not deal with a stranger on a Japanese learning forum - maybe you have friends who can still buy gift cards there.)
Alternatively I could try to buy the book for you on amazon.co.jp and then gift it to you, but I’ve never tried that so I have no idea how well (or if) it works.
No worries if you’d rather not or if it’s too sketchy for you, but I thought I should at least offer.
Yeah there all in red meaning that they can’t be bought right now.
I appreciate the offer but I went ahead and bought it off of Bookwalker since I still had some coins to use.
Reporting in from the Wanikani forums. I may decide to participate, as it’s easier for me to read a book on my kobo during commute than a manga, with dictionary lookups and all. We’ll see.
Saw this on the Wanikani forums and I am super tempted. But I have to finish カフェ夜1 first and I’m reading it at a glacial speed.
Glad to see I managed to attract some potential new participants from WK. Welcome to the Natively forums and to the book club, @Simsim and @IntrepidFox!
Oh, nice! 夜カフェ was my first BBC read.
I also have a book with which I’ll have to think about what to do, because my speed is also glacial. I’m currently thinking that I’ll try to read both at the same time, and I’m already looking forward to regretting that - maybe I’ll just put the other book on hold for a while
I definitely think you shouldn’t skip out on this book club though! At least for me, book clubs are best experienced fresh, and that goes doubly so for a book club with mystery components
where it’s fun to join into the speculations and discussions.
夜カフェ is a much better first choice than any of the other ones people have suggested like 魔女の宅急便.
I did think about maybe doing the two together, but I’m pretty sure future me will not be pleased…. But yeah, the speculation etc would be really fun. Decisions, decisions, decisions….
Come to the dark side!!! We take full responsibility for potentially delaying your 夜カフェ reading.
More importantly, I love your avatar picture! Where does it come from?
Ok, I’m convinced.
It’s Sailor Neptune, found the illustration on Pinterest.
Starting Date
Alright - since we haven’t gotten anybody new in the “how long do you think shipping will take” poll for a week now and @soggyboy will probably get his copy somewhen this week (but probably hasn’t so far?), I think a safe starting date would be November 16th.
- Sounds good!
- I’d rather do something else (please comment)
Pace
Looking at pace polls: 15 weeks looks like a winner. Hopefully not so slow that faster participants lose their patience and read too much ahead, and hopefully not so fast that slower participants can’t keep up with it. The first 8 weeks have only 3 chapters that are more demanding, and when we get to the longer weeks in the latter half I expect that we’ve settled into the book enough.
We can also have a poll after week 9 or 10 to see how we’re doing with the 17 page weeks, and if 22 pages seems doable or more scary than the werewolf.
- Sounds good!
- I’d rather do something else (please comment)
A quick survey of our participants
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly: Are you the werewolf?
- Of course not!
I already know I’m likely not going to be able to keep up with 15 pages a week, so I’m going to step out now and read the book at my own pace. I hope everyone has fun!
Still waiting on my copy but I assume it’ll be here by the 16th.
Got my Kindle copy and the 16th is in the calendar. Let’s see how much of カフェ夜 I can finish by then.
Aw, sorry to hear that. Would it help you if we split chapter 1 into three weeks after all? That would mean that the first 5 weeks have 5, 10, 10, 11, 11 pages respectively. By then you might have gotten a bit used to the vocab, grammar, setting, characters and general writing style, so you could see if the following week with 16 pages is possible for you after all. And if not, you can then continue at your pace instead.
Does that sound like something you’d like to try? I feel like it would be a win-win - you might be able to participate after all, and having one more member is also nice for the club, especially considering that we aren’t much participants in the first place.
That’s the spirit! I’ll also try my best with 世にも奇妙な商品カタログ 3 タイミングのいい自動販売機・声変わりダイヤル他 | L23, although I think I’m a bit behind you at 34%
Have you read the previous books in the series too? I have had my eyes on these, but heard mixed reviews.
