Spoken like a true Austrian.
No, that would be basst scho!
I guess the next step could be to share your thoughts in German about each weekâs reading
I guess the next step could be to share your thoughts in German about each weekâs reading
Thatâs way too intimidating
But perhaps I will try
???
Whatâs that, then? Donât think Iâve ever seen anyone use that horrible spelling.

Title: Im Kopf des Mörders - Kalte Angst | L20??
Book type: Krimi
Available formats: physical / ebook / audiobook
Summary - English
âArno Strobelâs thrillers all have something in common: they are so exciting that you canât put them down.â Sebastian Fitzek
Chief Inspector Max Bischoff canât believe his ears when the head of the Forensic Psychiatry Clinic in Langenfeld calls him and tells him that he has important information about a current case. A case that is nothing but a mystery to Max Bischoff and his partner Horst Böhmer. A seemingly random stranger, who hides his face under a fly mask, is breaking into apartments and houses at night. He overpowers the residents and leaves only one survivor behind each time. And a message: âTell the others.â
And now the call from the psychiatric ward in Langenfeld. Siegfried Fissmann, one of the patients there and a convicted murderer himself, accurately predicts these murders. Bischoff has no choice but to get involved with Fissmann if he wants to prevent more people from dying. Even if this means that he himself reaches the limits of his mental endurance âŠ
A real âStrobelâ with the usual strong psychological component and the tough young investigator Max Bischoff, whose second case allows him to look deep into the abysses of the human soul.

Content Warnings
Well, obviously murder and also religious fanatism paired with child abuse
It is the second book in a series of 3, but we learn everything that we need to know from the first book in due time.
Reason(s) for nominating: I read it already and I thought it was a real page-turner and very creepy. Also, the language is pretty simple, which makes it a good book for learners, I think.
This sounds real spannend why do the content warnings make it sound more intriguing to me?
Right, so how about we leave a few more says for possible additional nominations, then have a poll on what to read on the 14th or so? This would probably take us to end of June/start of July as a starting date, which seems to possibly work for everyone.
Had to spend some time at a train station today, so of course I went to the train station book store and searched for good book club candidates. Here they are:
Title: Achtsam morden: Roman (Achtsam morden-Reihe, Band 1) | L30??
Book type:
Available formats: physical / ebook / audiobook
Summary - English
Björn Diemel is forced by his wife to attend a mindfulness seminar in order to straighten out his marriage, prove himself as a good father and restore his work-life balance, which is somewhat out of kilter. Björn is a successful lawyer and therefore has very little time for his family. The course actually bears fruit and Björn is even able to integrate what he has learned into his job, but not quite in the way he expected. Because when his client, a brutal and more than guilty major criminal, starts to cause him serious problems, he simply kills him - following all the rules of mindfulness. Achtsam Morden is the story of a conscious and decelerated murder, the long overdue marriage of mindfulness advice and crime fiction, but above all a unique and entertaining novel.

Reason(s) for nominating: The title sounds fun and ironic. Itâs a âSpiegel #1 Bestsellerâ which ofc is only a sales statistic, but for entertainment literature, I think itâs an ok indicator.

Reason(s) for nominating: Iâve heard good things about the author, also he seems to write in an easy-to-read fashion which sounds like a good fit for a readersâ club. Itâs also a âSpiegel #1 Bestsellerâ.
Excellent, our nominations are increasing!
I think Iâll go ahead and officially nominate MĂŒll after all. I keep thinking that I would be interested to read it, even if itâs 9nth in a series. The first in the series doesnât seem as easy to find anyway.
Title: MĂŒll | L30?? (learnnatively.com)
Book type: novel
Available formats: physical / ebook
Summary - English
âWaste is always about separating. Thatâs why I say garbage is the best school of thought. Because you have the categories, i.e. tubs. Without clear separation, you can forget about recycling. And I havenât even got to the problem materials yet.â
There is strict order at one of Viennaâs waste collection centers, until one day a human knee is found in the bulky waste tub. Other body parts soon turn up in other tubs, all of which have not been thrown in correctly, contrary to the garbage tip rules and much to the chagrin of the garbage collectors. Only the heart of the dismembered corpse is missing. The police are at a loss. Fortunately, one of the refuse collectors is an ex-colleague who not only finds the missing heart and accompanying letter, but has also never forgotten what you have to bear in mind when committing murder. And so Simon Brenner is not only involved in a new case, but also up to his neck in trouble.
Content Warnings
I donât know, but dismembered corpse is an obvious one.
Reason(s) for nominating: Popular Austrian author, has won awards, books made into movies, sense of humour. And thereâs something about garbage sorting that just attracts me (in a literary sense).
And another random one from me, once again because I liked the cover:
Book type: novel
Available formats: physical / ebook
Summary - English
Leo Donat has recently become a private detective after successfully becoming unemployed. Business is going badly when Dr. Dieter Durante, program manager of Phönix Verlag, visits him. He is to investigate the disappearance of his most important regional crime writer in Bavaria. Leo hates regional crime novels as much as he hates the provinces, but somehow he has to finance his next joint.
Reluctantly, he sets off on a search that takes him across the republic. He meets booksellers and tourists, fans and beautiful women, but no trace of the writer. Instead, he has to deal with several dead regional crime writers. Leo has always known that the province is dangerous - even for him.
Content Warnings
I donât expect there would be any (apart from murder of course), but I donât know.
Reason(s) for nominating: Thereâs a duck on the cover! Okay, more seriously, this book is supposed to be written in a humorous tone while still working well as a mystery. I like main characters that are made to do something they have no interest in or even actively dislike. Itâs also a book about books, or at least authors. And I also found this part of a review interesting for language learning: âAuch das geschickte Spiel mit Spachbarrieren zwischen Hochdeutsch Sprechenden und Menschen mit Dialekten/Mundarten geht voll auf.
Thatâs already visible in the title which is a word play on a bible quote that reads âWer sich in Gefahr begibt, der kommt darin um.â
I had no idea, thanks for the context!
How many of these books are translated into English (or how likely would books of this type be likely to be translated), anyone know? All these book blurbs sound like so much fun, but I donât know any German.
Hmm, from a quick search, Der Richter und sein Henker is translated as The Judge and his Hangman, and Die Wahrheit und andere LĂŒgen is translated as The Truth and Other Lies. I couldnât find Achtsam morden in English (doesnât mean it doesnât exist), but it is translated into Spanish as Mindfulness para asesinos. Sebastian Fitzek and Wolf Haas to a lesser extent have been widely translated, but I didnât find the specific books in our nominations.
Ah, I need to not forget I know some Spanish. Thatâs a good avenue to check as well. Thank you for looking into those! Sounds like thereâll be a decent chance of similar books being translated, at least, so Iâll have to do some research.
and apparently also French, Italian, Dutch, and maybe some others I overlooked. Sounds like he hit a nerve somewhereâŠ
Also I laughed out loud when I saw this in his list of books:
Translation: Killing mindfully - the exercise book
That would make for a nice spin-off club
For the Fitzek book, I think it is fairly new, so I donât know how fast these get translated usually. But if you search for the author on Amazon, you can find a bunch of his books in English translation.
Itâs poll time!
List of nominations is in the first post. The poll will be open for one week. Letâs choose our first read!
- Tod an der Wien
- Der Richter und sein Henker
- Die Wahrheit und andere LĂŒgen
- Todesfrist
- Im Kopf des Mörders
- Achtsam morden
Personally Iâm excited to read each and every one of them
