Lists discussion

that’s how I usually feel too lol.

Like じいさん in ヨコハマ買い出し紀行 is certainly doing some dialect, but even when I was digging through the IBC threads I don’t think I saw anyone definitively figure it out

At least for 関西弁 there should be plenty enough to make a list, I can go look through that thread and maybe @eagleflo would have some recs, since that seems to be an interest

That was me asking after 福井弁! I wonder if I should make the list then, since I’m in love with the dialect… I’m just at 1 series + 2 books so far though

Update: I made it

Update the second: That reminds me, I’d been going (in fits and spurts) through the list of authors on aozora to see if 1) there’s any from Fukui or 2) there’s any with my birthday. Most don’t have even a short bio, but I figured it was worth a shot seeing if I could find anything that way

Update the third: Of the authors who had where they were born written on their aozora page, zero were from Fukui. Well, I hadn’t exactly been expecting anything

And I started my prefectures list:

I surprisingly found 10 novels in my finished books where the setting was known. I’m sure there must be a couple more, but I’ll need to research. If anyone has any suggestions for the rest of the prefectures, I’m all ears!

I enjoy looking through those. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Is that ヲタクに恋は難しい?
I’ve seen that cover, but honestly always thought it was a rom com for the teenage boys audience I want to avoid.
It seems to have been published in the 女性 category though, so maybe not?
Anyway, I was trying to go with darker/ more stressful content at first, but I guess there’s no reason to do that specifically

Those are very appreciated, but not for this specific list :upside_down_face:

Never tried Mushishi nor スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり so maybe. Anything with 異世界 in the title is a no.

correct. It’s on my list, though… but not in the near future.

Not sure if you want help with that list, but here are some I could think of:

砂の女 | L45 is set in Yamagata.
痴人の愛 | L43 is set in Kanagawa.
One of my favourite books is set in Tokyo: JR上野駅公園口 | L47?? but also https://learnnatively.com/book/2f20d58780
Grave of the fireflies アメリカひじき・火垂るの墓 | L30?? is set in Hyogo. Edit: You already covered Hyogo.
十角館の殺人 | L34 is set in Oita.

I haven’t read the light novel, but the manga version of よくわからないけれど異世界に転生していたようです 1 | L26 deserves :hot_pepper: :hot_pepper: :hot_pepper:. The main character’s hobby is pleasuring herself.
I assume the LN would have one less, based on the fact that there’s no visual, though.
(I found it really annoying personally, but that’s also my opinion of KonoSuba, so maybe?)

It’s office worker adults for most characters (I forget if they mention ages, but probably late 20s/early 30s?), and college students for the few who aren’t (one character’s younger brother and some friends). It is very light and fluffy if you want to avoid light and fluffy, though. Slow paced basically no drama slice of life. Definitely 女性, though.

スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり fits a similar bill, adult feel-good romcom

For more serious adult stuff, I’ll second the 蟲師 rec, it’s about as far away from fan service as you can possibly get.

Also maybe some potential options: ゴールデンカムイ , 宇宙兄弟 , SHIORI EXPERIENCE, maybe テレワァク与太話

also 極主夫道, but that’s way more comedy

I haven’t read all of them, but i have on extremely good authority that they’re all worth reading, especially golden kamuy

Oh, true. I loved that series and it definitely belongs in there!

I also recommend that last one. I don’t know about the rest, but I will check it out.

That’s interesting!, I’ll add it as a Temp Score until I get around reading

There’s now a ‘add to custom lists’ button on all series pages! So series are now allowed @seanblue

I will probably add some functionality for searching for series directly on the ‘create list’ page, but just letting you all know that you can indeed add them now.

As mentioned, it will show a review but only for reviews on the first volume. I did not compile a user’s rating over the whole series either… just first volume.

Thank you! Yes, I can always use help.

I know of so many novels set in Tokyo, it was hard to decide. For now I decided to use パレード | L33 (learnnatively.com), but any of the entries is subject to change if I read another novel that represents the prefecture better.

It is? I don’t think I’ve seen a specific place mentioned. Of course, I’m still reading the book, so it may be later on.

It might not be. I haven’t read it. It might just have been inspired by the sand dunes in Yamagata. I am not 100% certain about this. :see_no_evil:

I’ll wait until I finish it to add it then. Several books don’t mention outright where they’re set (the 恩田陸 books for example), but they make it very clear through descriptions. I’m suspecting this may be another case like this.

@brandon

When adding series to lists, the cover art is broken.

Misc: Also curious, you get warnings for these kind of failures even if I block newrelic on my end?

For failure in image loading, no. At least not to my knowledge. TBH, my front end error alerts could use some improvement, but front end alert systems are always a bit noisy unfortunately.

Anyway, I’ve figured out the issue (forgot to update the cache), so it will appear broken on any series you add now, but is not broken data wise. I’ve fixed yours temporarily but you’ll notice the ‘Light novel Series’ is capitalized unfortunately.

I won’t go through and update the caches until I fix that capitalization… which will be all pushed out when I release list collaborators in an hour or so.
