I haven’t officially committed myself to it since I don’t know yet how busy I’ll be and I’ve been trying to only read my physical TBR this year, but I am tempted :eyes:

Note for US folks, JP Post is suspending shipments to US for now: News - Japan Post

Cdjapan says EMS, Registered Airmail, and Airmail are temporarily suspended, but they’ll still take orders, and ship once that’s over:

Suruga-ya doesn’t say anything on their site one way or the other.

Aren’t those the “these are slower and cost more” options anyway? I know DHL has also suspended some shipments, but maybe that’s just from Europe or for big/business orders? At the very least, CD Japan’s website still says DHL and Fedex are okay.

I want to order some manga mid-September after the next volume of 雨夜の月 comes out, so hopefully things are clearer by then.

Definitely slower, idk about cost. I only ever use DHL, except when Suruga-ya sends via EMS cuz the order’s too small.

Ooh good to know. Maybe I’ll get lucky & Suruga-ya will get it in by the time I get to an order (towards the end of the month, whenever it aligns with free shipping)

トワ・エ・モア | L18 - I recently had to reread vol 1 for a review, and I think I’ll reread vol 2 this weekend - since that’s where all the good parts are!!

Today I went to the book off in Otaru - I think this is my favorite store so far! Very well organized, and very well stocked! Such a great collection of both books and games. And clothes on the second floor.

I managed to not overbuy I think. :joy: I basically only bought from 2 authors, that’s my secret.

三四郎 | L40, 道草 | L40 and 門 | L39 by 夏目漱石. I originally wanted to buy 坊っちゃん and こころ, but I really liked the feel of these editions more than what they had for those. Is this a form of 面食い?装食い?:joy: I think 三四郎 was recommended as an accessible starter 漱石, which is what originally made me check it. These editions include an overview of his works and life, which should be interesting. It’s possibly the same in all of them, not sure.

感情教育 | L30??, ゼロ・アワー | L30??, 弱法師 (文春文庫 な 53-1) | L30??, 花伽藍 | L30?? and 深爪 (新潮文庫 な 41-2) | L30?? by 中山可穂 whose writing I’ve been enamored with ever since I read 猫背の王子. (Another cover buy!)

I’m already planning to go there again next week, but before that I really need to trial pack my luggage. :joy: There was so much more that caught my attention. :face_with_peeking_eye:

Yes I’m also still working on my backlog. Both ways.

looks like finally getting some better updated info on the tariff bs…

cdjapan has:
https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/info/20250829

so seems like if you use dhl, fedex, etc to ship to the us… it’s not a huge issue (of course still remains to be seen) …

but usps on the other hand per a news article (currently) rolling the dice
(if when they unsuspend the shipping stop for > 100 bucks)

So basically if I order $100, I’m looking at an additional $23-25. And sounds like it will be paid I’d advance, and not me having to deal with customs ppl. That’s not that bad, but I’ll definitely have to order a bit less/more selectively

You might want to experiment a bit, as e.g. for imports to Germany from Suruga-ya, DHL has a limit where, if I do not surpass it the tax handling expenses are included (these 8-10$ mentioned earlier), so I have not to pay them. This limit lies somewhere between 75€ and below which is safe, and 100€ and more, where things get unreasonably expensive.

So if I want to buy for more than 75€ I have learnt to split orders, so that I just have to pay the tax percentage (7% in case of Germany) and no additional handling costs.

This may all be different for imports into the USA, but otoh it may also be similar.

For me into Canada I pay a ~$20 handling fee as soon as I hit the duty limit here of $20.

Honestly, it’s why I do a lot more ordering from Mandarake these days, since their item prices are cheaper. Unless I’m ordering one to two things that I can slide in under that $20, even with free shipping, Surugaya usually isn’t my go to anymore.

Damn, I’ve only used DHL once but they charged a huge handling fee (25€) and I was far below 75€ :sob: (I’m in Austria)
I only order on cdjapan nowadays because they handle all the vat stuff in beforehand and I don’t have to bother with those huge handling fees.

Plus, ya’ll only have 7% taxes on books? :sob: I think we don’t even have anything that goes as low :joy: I might start ordering my shit to friends in Germany and pick it up while I’m there :innocent:

When I tried that for CDJapan, they wanted to bill the normal non-book import VAT of 19% for Germany, so so far I never used it, as I am not sure where/if I would get my money back.

Yeah, cdjapan’s system can’t cope with some items being subject to a non default VAT rate. For books to the UK, because the VAT rate is zero you can select the “don’t take the tax at the cdjapan end” option, and then because of the zero rate the courier doesn’t charge either. For a lower but non zero rate it would be more awkward.

(In the one case where I selected the wrong option and cdjapan charged me for tax that was not due, I emailed them and they refunded it as store points. But that was a one-off.)

Maybe I’m getting ripped off, I’m pretty sure I got charged 19% (Germany)

This is for used books through Neokyo, shipped via… I’ll have to check, I thought it was Japan post. But also, it’s being charged and paid at the door through deutsche post.

I’ll have a look. (Edit: they charged 7% plus two fees 6 € + 1€)

I once thought they had charged 19% and in fact it just looked like that. Really it were the usual 7% for books plus some additional handling costs, due to some obscure regulation :money_mouth_face: which felt like invented on the spot.

Smaller and thinner than expected - nice! It’s manga thickness, and tall manga height. And thankfully there’s no typos, unlike the horribly OCR’d digital version :joy:

Edit: I found an actual typo rather than an OCR error. Apparently line 3 was supposed to be しとってん (sry for the lighting)

Yeah, like I mentioned before it has one or two typos that I can remember; hopefully shouldn’t be as bad as the digital version, though.

Yeah it’s not that bad - just a funny coincidence. Only one I’ve noticed so far… And it’s certainly not the only book to have typos

Ah you’re right, thanks, the post charges a 6 euro fee and then a 1 euro fee for something else, and for the amount I typically import it just looked like 19%
